Review: Mark Gilbert has been running the now infamous Eccentrics events (with Will Overill) for nigh on five years, with 30 odd years of music production/mixing making him a south London favourite. He's quite an expert on exquisite rare and exotic flavours too. This is second in the peerless World Series releases for his new eponymous imprint based out of Oslo. There is an infectious hi-life house track that appears in the form of "Obey The Chief ", a killer percussive number entitled "The Path" plus "Eko Funk" which is referred to fittingly by the label as the 'chugger'. We'd say it's more of a lo-slung balearic house jam made for drifting.
Review: First out on vinyl in 2009, this debut EP from UK funk producer Stupid Human (real name Mark Gilbert, and AKA Hugh Mane) now gets a digital release for the first time. The EP opens with 'Swamp Funk' itself, an aptly-titled, low-slung groove augmented by blues-y harmonica that could have come out at any point in the past 50 years. 'Mass Madness' then tops lilting, lounge-y piano with Peter Finch's famous anti-TV rant from 1976 movie 'Network', before 'Together' plays us out on a slightly more standard issue disco-house note. It's the title track that's the must-have but 'Mass Madness' is a nice quirky lil' bonus
Review: Killer debut on the Stupid Human label from System Status and Hugh Mane! The more attentive diggers out there will recognise System Status from a pair of excellent 12"s on his own Night Sweats label and he's also contributed to the Horn Wax cause. "Hands" finds the Cambridge based producer in fine form, laying down a crisp, boogie indebted production that has one of the warmest basslines in some time. Inskwel is a good choice to remix the track, given his own boogie flecked tastes and the Australian producer turns in a wonderfully gritty slowed down take that complements the original. Following his debut for Gerd Janson's Running Back, (not so) mysterious Hugh Mane provides "Up Synth Creek With A Greek", based around a naggingly familiar recycled melodic refrain that will nestle right in your head.
