Sub-liminal Recordings

Sub-liminal Recordings is a drum & bass label founded by Ben Carvin aka DJ Agro in 2015. Prior to this (2011 onwards), Sub-liminal built up its fan base by throwing regular club nights at Volks in Brighton. DJ Agro, Warhead, Kumo, Too Greezey, Damage Report, DJ Hybrid, Guzi, A N F M and Leaf are all artists that have helped shape the label’s dark, rolling and moody 175bpm sound, with their turbo-charged productions. Sub-liminal Recordings is the parent label to Sub-Division Recordings.

Dreadnaught - "Flute" - (3:40) 180 BPM
Review: Selecta! Sub-liminal bossman Agro rolls his sleeves up and gets stuck into his label vaults, drawing out persys and reminding us just how on it his label has been since morning. Ranging from the twisted bass bubbles and trippy warped sounds of Warhead's 'Tread Carefully' to the interplanetary bleep drama and sweet bubbling subs of Kumo's 'Trick Shot', Agro is explicitly telling us how versatile and timeless his label has always been. With some of these cuts going back to the 2016/17, he's proved it. Get stuck in!

Review: 50 tracks!! Count them - FIFTY tracks - right here from the Sub-liminal Recordings crew as the label looks back over the last few years of massive bangers. Pure gully science from across the board, if you've missed out on any of their releases or you've only just tuned into the sounds of Agro's longstanding label then this is the place. Highlights come in all shapes and sizes but only a madman would miss out ridiculous heavyweight cuts likes Shayper's 'Burnt Gerbil', Prestige's wonked out weirdo funk-up 'Computer Killer', Xav's old school charmer 'Crisp Packet'. These are just three crucial examples. Dig deep!

Sub-liminal Recordings On Air Part 2
Various
Agro & Diligent Fingers - "Clap Up" - (4:00) 180 BPM
Review: Sub-liminal brings an end to the year that was, going out all guns blazing with on Air Part 2 featuring a bunch of wicked VIPs. Label staple Agro serves up several collaborations on here with the likes of Mentah, Raz, Diligent Fingers and Ghxsty. There's also a few offerings by the ever reliable Yatuza; our pick being the wonky stepper of "Distance" with Master Error. Elsewhere, Pyro pops up a few times throughout and was in fine form on "Smithdown Bass" and Prestige handed in a couple of quality dubs with neurofunk cut "Logical" being our pick of the bunch.

Agro Remix'd
Buss It (Mentah remix) - (4:17) 180 BPM Hot
Review: Sub-liminal Recordings chief Ben Carvin aka Agro is responsible for one of the best drum n' bass long-players this year in the form of Bad From Morning. In the last few months, there's been a steady stream of remixes being released and here's the latest installment of reinforced rollers. Kent's Teej does his best impression of a classic DJ Krust style minimal steppa on his rendition of "Thuggish", Xav remixes "Let's Get Frisky" (feat Mr Traumatik/Devilman) into a jump-up themed jam that's sure to get the lighters in the air, and Yatuza who surfaced on the label last week with an awesome EP returns here for a remix of "Eagle Clan".

Sub-liminal Recordings On Air Part 1

Agro, Mentah & Charlie Rotten - "Don Daddaz" - (4:37) 180 BPM
Review: Bang! 30 Sub-liminal tracks deeply dug from every corner of the Brighton label's vaults, all packaged up in a new VA concept album: On Air. Perfect for filling a few gaps in your collection, or new ears who've only just experienced the power and gritty funk of Agro's label, every cut is a highlight or a heavyweight. Warhead & Dutta's grizzly 2018 slap-about 'Don't Test' still melts your skin, Leaf's 2020 wonk-out 'Erby' still hit with high grade 23rd century funk, Pyro's 2020 'Tick Yes' will still blackmail you and your family with its sinister undertones. And that's just a mere tenth of this solid collection. Cop it.

Agro Remixes Part 2
Buss It (Mentah remix) - (4:17) 180 BPM Hot
Buss It - (4:17) 180 BPM
Review: Sub-liminal sergeant major Agro continues his remix series with this very naughty twist from Mentah. Taking those big one-note drones and harmonic flutters of the 2020 original - which is also provided on this release - Mentah takes the track apart and rebuilds it with a supersized turbine blast basslines and a new drum kit that switches between crisp neck-snap two-step and bone rattling breaks. Comparable to a track like 'Dirty Chopper' in its relentlessness and bullnosed drive, once again both the remix and the original are 10/10 scenarios for any discerning dnb DJ right now.

Agro - "Clap Up" (feat Diligent Fingers) - (4:00) 180 BPM
Review: Sub-liminal take a moment to look back over almost six years of hard graft at the future talent coal face. Having been responsible for so many bangers from so many now household names, it's a mean feat boiling it down to this mere 50 heavyweight highlights. All the label's key names are on board; Guzi, Dreadnaught, Nick The Lot, Too Greezy, Kumo, Version, Vital, Pyro, Motiv and many more dust off their past heavers, hurters and head-slappers to reflect on everything Sub-liminal has stood for and encouraged so far. From the deeper, more subtle bubblers (Sam Harris - 'Coffee Machine') to the most outrageous funk-ups (Warhead - 'Cranked') this EP has everything. When the Riddim hits you, you can't say no...

Exposure - (4:20) 180 BPM
Review: Greasier than Snape's hair after a night swimming in olive oil and pomade, Too Greazy slides insidiously back onto the realms of Sub-Liminal with five new originals. If you've so much as sniffed at a release then you'll know the stains his music makes. Highlights include the beefy, sweaty, stompy homage to your closest relatives "Rotund", the wobbling sub and insistent drums of "Baddest Dan" and the pure darkness of "Pressure". And if all of that isn't enough greasy heaviness for you, then chow down on the Taxman remix and watch your cholesterol levels rocket permanently.

Review: Everyone likes a good compilation, right? What's better than having as big a range of artists as possible in one condensed place? It's essentially an album with the ease of listening of a single, so we're all for it. Subliminal have come out with the 2020 edition in their Riddim Return series and it's packed full of bangers, across a range of styles, and it's one of those albums which doesn't try to be cool or sophisticated by chucking in a few fillers for the sake of diversity - it's just hard stuff here. It works great, with Sam Harris' tendency for muscular minimosity coming on loud and clear on Boom Ting, a wickedly devilish and driving roller.

Review: One of the regular labels we feature are Sub-Liminal, a wicked little imprint that puts out a diverse sound ranging from techy rollers to jump-up steppers and even liquidy numbers. This week they've arrived with an EP from Agro, who, across six tracks, spans various tones and styles, all of them rooted in a sense of dancefloor aggressiveness and all of them top-notch. 'Claap Up' is a highlight, its rolling percussive line isn't the paciest but is loping and satisfying, whilst a gargling bass and sweeping reeces sit just above and inject all the force. 'Data Entry' is also a wicked track, with a lovely, stripped back drum line that's full of moody sonics. Top stuff.

Agro & Friends
Don Daddaz (feat Mentah & Charlie Rotten) - (4:37) 180 BPM
Review: Agro is on Sub-Liminal with an EP that's full of, well, agro. He's roped in some of his friends for the release, including NV & Mentah, Leaf, Charlie Rotten and Toxinate in what is a full-throttle release from start to finish. This is clear from the off, as 'Don't Play' dives down deep into murky sonics and minimalist force for session that'll appeal to the real heads. 'Godfather' feat Lead has a unique percussive line that lends it an almost halftime quality; 'Gorgon Sound' is a naughty roller with a disturbingly scary sub bass & reece bass combination and 'Thinking Bout U' ties up the release with more dark atmospherics - quality stuff.

Sub-liminal Criminals Volume 1
Various
Warhead - "A'Gwarn" - (3:33) 180 BPM
Review: Two and a half years deep into their dark star safari Sub-Liminal continue to shred up the dance with a crack team of heavy bass innovators. Bass riffs galore and aesthetics so unforgiving, every track is tailored for the most underground floor... The worming low-end mashery of Too Greezey's "Modulation", Leaf's oddball drum funk and melting trumpets on "Shoot Off", Warhead's brutal technoid mutations on "A'Gwarn" and Tyrant's absolutely annihilating "Nuclear Bomb" are just four of the 14 high level bangers on display here. There's nothing subliminal about the message on this one: not picking up on this is a criminal offence.

Various - "Sub-liminal Recordings Presents The Myriad Vol 1" (continuous DJ mix - Juno exclusive) - (31:18) 181 BPM
Review: DJ Agro's Sub-Liminal unleash their largest message yet with their debut compilation They Myriad Vol. 1. A chance to catch up, a chance to fill holes in your collection, a chance to realise the amount of next gen, hugely-hyped talent the label has... Damage Report, Dialogue, Too Greezey and Leaf lead the way as he run the label's vast gully gamut. From Fena's Moving Fusion-style womps on "Right Place Right Time" to Agro's gutter-chomping subversive Urban Takeover style bass roller "Not Fools" via Leaf's savage staccato stepper "New Life", the whole collection reflects just how much exciting D&B can be found just beneath the all too shiny surface.
