Sub-liminal Recordings

Sub-liminal Recordings

Sub-liminal Recordings is a drum & bass label founded by Ben Carvin aka DJ Agro in 2015. Prior to this (2011 onwards), Sub-liminal built up its fan base by throwing regular club nights at Volks in Brighton. DJ Agro, Warhead, Kumo, Too Greezey, Damage Report, DJ Hybrid, Guzi, A N F M and Leaf are all artists that have helped shape the label’s dark, rolling and moody 175bpm sound, with their turbo-charged productions. Sub-liminal Recordings is the parent label to Sub-Division Recordings.

Review: Putting the 'ow' into 'meow', Oz kicks right off with 'Hell Cat', an EP comprising four scrammy growlers on the ever-ready Sub-liminal. As with his previous dispatches, the charm is in that rough, angular grit Oz brings to the vibe. It's evident from that first necksnap beat and cat growl on 'Hell Cat' and runs right through to last stuttering break on the juglised finale 'Conspiracy'. It's also evident in the stuttering filtered chops and lip-smacking bassline on 'Clear The Air' and the sandpaper funk bassline revs of 'Murda Dub'. Putting the 'hell' into 'hello', Oz needs you needs your attention. Don't be a pussycat.

Review: Stance continues his great run of form with this crucial excursion on Sub-liminal. Four tracks deep, each one as sinful as the last, across the EP we're thrown into high voltage bassline lava with the pure gluttony of 'Manhood', we swim naked with pride in the harmonics of 'Sins' and brock-out with pure lust on the grizzly slammer 'Wu Tang Sword' and chow down on the creepy 'Paradox' with pure greed. Thou shalt covet.

Travel buddies include the likes of Raz, Beat Merchants, Yatuza, Leaf and label boss Agro and the results have more twists and turns than Spaghetti Junction. Highlights include the ice cold rave blasts of 'Bumbahead' with Beat Merchants, the pranged out bass and Break style drums on 'Can't Feel It' with Leaf and the full grunt finale 'Anytime' with bossman Agro. Review: Sub-liminal take a moment to look back over almost six years of hard graft at the future talent coal face. Having been responsible for so many bangers from so many now household names, it's a mean feat boiling it down to this mere 50 heavyweight highlights. All the label's key names are on board; Guzi, Dreadnaught, Nick The Lot, Too Greezy, Kumo, Version, Vital, Pyro, Motiv and many more dust off their past heavers, hurters and head-slappers to reflect on everything Sub-liminal has stood for and encouraged so far. From the deeper, more subtle bubblers (Sam Harris - 'Coffee Machine') to the most outrageous funk-ups (Warhead - 'Cranked') this EP has everything. When the Riddim hits you, you can't say no...

Feel The Same (feat T Zone) - (4:05) 175 BPM Hot
Taken - (4:12) 174 BPM
Review: Over on Sub-liminal Recordings, Yatuza is landing with an EP that blends the savage sounds of jump-up with effortless use of space and a clarity designed to impress but not overwhelm. 'The Divide' rests on finger-click drum hits that intersperse with a wobbling sub bass and choppy bass staps, it's got that head-nodding vibe to the drums we all love and it's an all-round masterclass of blending funk and aggression. 'Feel The Same' builds up with murderous intent above a body of furious kicks, before climbing the heights of euphoria into stabbing, flowing territory. Beautiful stuff, and we also love the wobbling gargles of the final track, 'Taken', which is just pure naughtiness. Big ups.

Noise Complaint (part 2) - (4:34) 175 BPM Hot
Review: Back by Tik Tok demand! One of Agro's earliest releases 'Noise Complaint' keeps the viral vibe alive as it returns in remastered form plus a whole new chapter. Still calling the council seven years after its first outing, 'Noise Complaint Part 2' keeps the same cheeky vibe and samples of the original but with a much juicier, rolling bassline. Still not giving any Fs, still not turning the levels down after 10pm, still bubbling with Agro's classic aggro signature, if you don't like it you can call the council yourself!

Review: Sub-liminal welcome another exciting new name to the fold: PunksVicious. He's from Cambridge and he's every bit as unruly as his name suggests. Gruff, gritty and all warm and distorted, there's a timeless foundational buzz about each of these five tracks. Highlights include the junglised switches and flabby bassline of the title track 'Positive Anarchy' the tension and creepiness of 'Son Of A Ditch' and the face-melting grunt and thrust of 'Hack N Slash'. We need some positive anarchy in our lives right now. Beat the system.

Highlights include the froggish wobbles on Agro's "The Genius", Greezey's Formation-style jungle roll-out "Lose Focus", the sun-kissed skank-packer "Don't Mek Me Get Dark" and the walloping classic early Playaz bass vibes on "It's Only Right". Review: Bangers for breakfast, stinkers for tea... No matter what time you link up with Leaf, he's always cooking up something chronic and full flavoured. Take "Goat", a wonky, creaky weirdo of a tune, that comes complete with a little animal magic. Take those loose and spacious Die-style breaks on "Run The Riddim". Take those evocative, eerie Oriental strings on "Lucky House Grin". Take the rubber ball bass and necksnap bounce of "Hold Up", the croaky toad bass of "Save Meh" and the pranged out sci-fi funk of "Conscious State". In fact take the whole lot because it really doesn't get much better than this. Leaf is killing it right now.

Complete with an instrumental if you find Mr Traumatik & Devilman's pervy bars a little risqu?.

Tweeter Box - (4:16) 172 BPM
Review: Sub-liminal bossman Agro's remix project continues with this monstrous take on 'Tweeter Box' by Sub-Division artist Sinexia. The original (released last year) is a pretty stripped-back affair with a high voltage bassline and generous levels of sub. In true Agro form, the bigger the rig, the better it sounds. Meanwhile the remix from young Belgian Sinexia throws in a whole new layer of steamroller bass textures and pummelling drums for more of a straight up dancefloor dnb style. Box fresh.

Review: Bang! 30 Sub-liminal tracks deeply dug from every corner of the Brighton label's vaults, all packaged up in a new VA concept album: On Air. Perfect for filling a few gaps in your collection, or new ears who've only just experienced the power and gritty funk of Agro's label, every cut is a highlight or a heavyweight. Warhead & Dutta's grizzly 2018 slap-about 'Don't Test' still melts your skin, Leaf's 2020 wonk-out 'Erby' still hit with high grade 23rd century funk, Pyro's 2020 'Tick Yes' will still blackmail you and your family with its sinister undertones. And that's just a mere tenth of this solid collection. Cop it.

Review: Is he a PA system? Is he named after your dad? No one is too sure, but we can all agree that Pa's music is absolutely despicably and utterly gully, as proved once again with his first full EP for Agro's Sub-liminal. Here are six happy-slapping examples of Pa's sound and energy that ranges from the timeless rave energy of the title track 'Tape Pack' to the grittier, razor sharp 'Scorpions'. Other highlights include the time stretched fills and classic disco vocal sample on '93' and the unforgiving bass tension on 'Ya Mad'. Massive.

Review: Shottys fired! Pyro finds another way to spark up the dance with this four bullet bruiser EP that's absolutely steeped in groaning basses. 'Shotty Dub' takes the lead with a humungous low end and very little else. 'Compulsion' follows with a fast-lane pace thanks to its pulsating, technoid bassline and classic house vocal loop while 'Smithdown Bass' flips to alien mode - all scatty, tense and dangerous. For good measure Warhead joins the party with a stinking remix of one of Pyro's older rave smasher 'Bring Me Up'.

Review: The latest bit over on the voracious Sub-liminal Recordings is from Dreadnaught, and it manages to be both driven in its focus and diverse; led by minimal sounds but with splashes of jump up. 'Risk Taker' is absolute genius, with a snapping percussive line that grounds a flowing, funky, bassline that's unlike anything we've heard in a very long time. You have to hear it, really, and it's followed up by the gully roller that is 'Reach Out', an Alix Perez-esque concoction that has us wishing clubs were open. There is the stomping sounds of 'All That', and the clinical minimalism of 'Skyz'. Bigups.

Eskiboy & Mailout Moron Remixes
Agro - "Eskiboy" (Mentah remix) - (4:45) 175 BPM Hot
Too Greezey - "Mailout Moron" (Guzi remix) - (4:35) 175 BPM
Review: Sub-liminal are one of those very prolific, very underground labels that tends to go unnoticed yet releases some absolute bangers. So, a tasty two-track VA single is only going to go one way - hard. The first tune - Mentah's remix of 'Eskiboy' - is an instant stand out, a wobbling riff of force and hurting energy, all tied up in a jump-up sized package. Guzi's remix of 'Mailout Moron' by Too Greezey is another top-level cut, a skippy drum line and menacing vocal samples sit above a fiercely minimal roller that clicks and clanks with satisfying precision. It's got a futuristic vibe and we're here for it, so you should be too.

Buss It (Mentah remix) - (4:17) 180 BPM Hot
Buss It - (4:17) 180 BPM
Review: Sub-liminal sergeant major Agro continues his remix series with this very naughty twist from Mentah. Taking those big one-note drones and harmonic flutters of the 2020 original - which is also provided on this release - Mentah takes the track apart and rebuilds it with a supersized turbine blast basslines and a new drum kit that switches between crisp neck-snap two-step and bone rattling breaks. Comparable to a track like 'Dirty Chopper' in its relentlessness and bullnosed drive, once again both the remix and the original are 10/10 scenarios for any discerning dnb DJ right now.

Review: Everyone likes a good compilation, right? What's better than having as big a range of artists as possible in one condensed place? It's essentially an album with the ease of listening of a single, so we're all for it. Subliminal have come out with the 2020 edition in their Riddim Return series and it's packed full of bangers, across a range of styles, and it's one of those albums which doesn't try to be cool or sophisticated by chucking in a few fillers for the sake of diversity - it's just hard stuff here. It works great, with Sam Harris' tendency for muscular minimosity coming on loud and clear on Boom Ting, a wickedly devilish and driving roller.

Hot Pepper (Objectiv dub version) - (4:08) 174 BPM
Review: Just when you thought things couldn't get any spicier, Agro and DJ Hybrid's Riko Dan fronted 'Hot Pepper' gets some extra sauce from man-of-the-moment Objectiv. Stripping things back to a warm rubbery bass shot and swaggering beats that leave plenty of space for Riko's bars. The rap too hot for your sensitive soul? Then jump on the dub where that big emotional breakdown takes the full focus. Fans of The Sauce and Alibi will be all over this.

Rapid bassline funk, even harder bars and beats that singe every whisker north of your neck, this has been a huge bubbler for all concerned all summer, now it's yours. Review: Out of the frying pan, into the "Fire Pit", long-time Sub-Liminal soldier Mentah heats things up once again with this epic six track EP. The title track takes the lead and sets the energy and tone with its scorched harmonics and ruffneck breaks. Elsewhere highlights include the warped elastic bass roars of "Observed" and the pummelling drums and theatrical dynamics of "Break This Down". Topped off with a crucial remix of "No Disrespect" from Jaydan and you've got yourself one of Sub-Liminal and Mentah's biggest EPs to date so far. Fire!

Review: Guzi, with the speed of an Uzi and the glamour of Gucci, is landing on Sub-Liminal Recordings with an unsophisticated but incredibly fun release, one which, if you hear out live, is certain to get you moving. There's a carelessness and a freedom to these tracks and it's a tangible sense of kinetics. The title track kicks things off in style but it's 'Shadow' feat. BP MC that really takes the cake, a winding, subby track that flips between wobbiling shimmers and jump-up stabs. It's a wicked track and definitely the highlight of the release. 'Shroud' feat. Peggy Sewage - great name - is another absolute banger but one that's deep and wispy in all the right ways. Sick release.

Review: One of the regular labels we feature are Sub-Liminal, a wicked little imprint that puts out a diverse sound ranging from techy rollers to jump-up steppers and even liquidy numbers. This week they've arrived with an EP from Agro, who, across six tracks, spans various tones and styles, all of them rooted in a sense of dancefloor aggressiveness and all of them top-notch. 'Claap Up' is a highlight, its rolling percussive line isn't the paciest but is loping and satisfying, whilst a gargling bass and sweeping reeces sit just above and inject all the force. 'Data Entry' is also a wicked track, with a lovely, stripped back drum line that's full of moody sonics. Top stuff.

Review: Uh-oh, Warhead's on the 'Rebound' and he's out on the prowl with some of his most seductive bangers to date. The title track is the sound of him chirpsing you over a meal of rare-cooked basslines and tender stem snares. 'Backstreet Business' slides into your DMs flashing its raw high voltage bassline at your peepers. 'Ozone' is the type of romp that turns the room upside down thanks to those tumbling toms on the fills and that urgent (not to mention classic) vocal sample. Elsewhere 'Good To Me' chats you up in a chippy, all greasy and hungry, 'How Can I' is a gnarly, white knuckle mercy trip to see an old flame while 'Versions' ends the EP with a grumpy, grizzled bassline that vows never to go on the rebound again. Live, laugh, love and all that.

Review: Sub-liminal Recordings are sick little imprint that push out a wicked, diverse range of stuff from more sultry cuts to harder hitting numbers. The latest release on the label from Too Greezey is certainly in the latter category and Mailout Moron is a biting four-tracker, each slice adding up to one seriously tasty pie. The title track is the highlight, with a pretty funny intro playing on the stereotype of the bedroom producer we all know, who thinks they're the bees knees after a single set. The track itself is spacious but penetrating, with a set of pointed, techy basses that expand out into a shuddering wave of ghostly force. It sets the tone with style and the next 3 tunes don't disappoint.

Review: Ooof! Sub-liminal are spoiling us right here: 19 tracks and a mix killer mix from gully professor Too Greezey. Loaded with upfront exclusives, VIPs and classics in equal measure. One moment we're squelching and squirming to the wet bass on Warhead's "Bad Trip", the next we're gurning and turning to Benny L's Dillinja-esque remix of Hybrid & Agro, the next we're spooking out to the Clipz-style harmonies on Guzi's "Business" VIP, the next we're writing out our last will and testament to Agro's incredible mix of Leaf's "New Life". Review: Smashing down the doors of 2018 with a cheeky multi-artist EP: Sub-Liminal start business for the year with two deadly amazement sessions. Firstly Subzero takes Agro's 2016 smasher "Dub Fi Dub" and tears it a new one with a whole new layer of diesel powered bass while Version runs point with "Plissken", a scuffed-knuckle sandpaper funk roller that's loaded with electrified sizzled bassline and rattled drums. Review: Sub-Liminal solider Mentah continues to dig deep into his craft as he unleashes two more disturbingly heavy workouts. "Shadow Of Doubt" is a real grumbling, bone-shaking rattler with a warped bassline that echoes with deep unease. "Autoguns" fires with more of a laser-lashed edge as rough metallic bass textures groan with alien aggression. Both hitting that sweet spot between tech and dancefloor with serious attention to detail and dynamics, these kill it... Undoubtedly.

Review: Sub-liminal sleepers this one is for you... The UK label have just repurposed and repackaged some of their many successes on this epic 20 track compendium. Ranging from the white knuckle neuro pace of Fena's "Viral" to Dominator's gamechanging grumpy-bass twist on Agro's "Noise Complaint" via Dialogue's ultra-grot wobbler "If You Can't Beat 'Em", Tyrant's Nightflight-style jungle slap-about "Bomb", Agro's sinful stepper "Tank" and many more, this is a perfect snapshot of the label's breadth, weight and uncompromised sound so far. Boom Ting - (5:30) 172 BPM Hot
Review: Sub-liminal Recordings is one of those small, low-key labels that every now and then actually releases some pretty outstanding music. This time it's the turn of Sam Harris, who's music is a lot more exciting than his name might suggest, his two-tracker here rolling out in delicious fashion. 'Coffee Machine' is the first, a spooky, spacious introduction giving way to a subtle, pulsing back end that sits perfectly underneath a skippy percussive line. 'Boom Ting' is in a similar vein but manages to amp up the drum-pressure even more with a fantastic percussive line, as its sneaky little bassline creeps in underneath this to transform it into a proper little roller. Sick single.

Review: Preston pistoleero Warhead lets rip on Sub-Liminal with six battle-ready bumpers of varying degrees of aggression. "Bludclart Dubplate" wobbles and shakes like an old Bristol joint, "Triggered" waves and weaves with a woozy horn sample and warped bass stretches, "Talk Sense" pokes and punches with a stabbed-out horn riff and an outrageous fog horn bass lick on the drop, "Cop Killa" scratches and soothes with its well balanced smoky jazz whispers and guttural bass groan and "Don't Test" teases and pleases with minimal mischief. Finally "Electric" (with Erkal) slaps and batters us with mangled muted trumpets and pneumatic beats so strong they should come with a government health warning. Show us your war face!

Review: Two highly respected new gen roustabouts, two tunes, one massive reminder of why Sub-Liminal are killing it right now. Vital takes the virtual A-side with an epic riff monster that rises and rises with venomous stripped back charm while Agro flips the vibe with "I Set This Ting", a much nastier, groaning paranoid number that's more warped than a night out with a timelord. Review: Mentah goes back to last years Time Space & Matter album and picks one of the track ripest for remixing. To be fair, the whole release was ripe but he's picked the rolling, grunting thunder jam "No Disrespect". We respect that decision, especially when the remixes are as good as these... Donny Jaydan gets brutal with his drums and perks up the bassline while the mysterious Lash Lams dusts off the breaks for more of a junglised slap-about. Both the original and remixes absolutely kill it. And we mean this in all due respect.

Review: After a string of slamming EPs, Sub-Liminal mainstay Mentah delivers his debut album and it's a powerful piece of work. Punchy and concise at nine tracks, the focus is fully on the floor and hyper-charged with an on-point modern jump-up hybrid sound. The type of cuts you can imagine Randall playing at Breaking Science, 4am, the basslines wobble, the textures drone ominously, the riffs never get too OTT and they all seriously hurt! Highlights include the Benny L style swampy bass on "No Disrespect", the nan-slapping foghorn heaviness of "Alone In The Light" and stinking distorted tripletty finale "Grudges" but that just not even half of this universally heavy tale. Big up Mentah.

Review: Following his "Bloodclart Dubplate" EP this spring, Warhead returns to Sub-liminal with another generous five pack punch up that ranges from divine funk to guttural low end filth. The title track is one of Warhead's funkiest cuts to date with its urgent vocal and spacious sense of soul and freedom. It's joined by the sweeping gully drones of "Embers", the knuckle scuffing gritty bass of "Kill Ya Quick", the dizzy tribal rolls and jittering grizzles of "Start The Attack" and the siren blazing hair raiser "Watch It". As if that's not generous enough, there's an insane Dutta remix thrown in for good measure, too. Thinkin bout this?

Review: Unabashed D&B funk from one of 2016's most exciting D&B success stories, Too Greezey continues to showcase a slippery, sub-funked style of underground D&B that taps into the mid 90s core while looking confidently into the future. "Mysterons" is a devilish stepper with enough chewy funk to kneed ten tonnes of dough while "Analogue Visions" is so low-swung it could swipe your trousers. "Be Mine" showcases his flipside with a slammer that nods at a classic Ram style with its brutal Trilogy style fills while "Darkest Day" rattles and rolls with a classically trained Q&A funk. "Just Wanna Love You" shuts down this particular chapter on a jazzy liquid flex that takes you back to High Contrast's or Logistics' early work. Show some love.

Review: Agro a-go-go.. The Sub-liminal bossman breaks down the doors of 2017 with four absolute flatteners. The story starts with "The Music" where a crisp, warm skank and vocal are soon shoved into a murky pool of low-end riffage, jump-up with added funk in the groove, this will spark up any dance in any corner. "Vengeance" follows on a meaner tip as stern bass and sudden amen flurries lick upside your senses and "Cold Roads" has one of the coldest drops Agro's ever created - sinister, moody and tubular, it is 1997 all over again. "Crush" concludes this fearful tale with the help of equally rising Leaf. Slapping and buzzing with a mild nod towards the Bristol sound and Clipz in his early prime - there's mischief in the moodiness. We'll let the music do the talking from here on.

Incredible news for the mandem who love a gully riff.
