Review: If you're feeling the weight of world on your shoulders right now- and given the volume of bad news about, most of us are - then we'd highly recommend giving this new single from Ache Baez a spin. Warm, heady and rich in cute musical touches (jazzy electric guitar motifs, rubbery bass guitar, manipulated female vocal samples and pudding-rich Rhodes flourishes), title track 'Funk The World' is a fine fusion of deep house nous and Balearic-flavoured nu-disco sass. The Mexican producer continues in a similar tip on 'Fana Village', where snappy MPC house beats come laden with reverb-laden, early morning vocal samples, more ear-catching electric piano riffs and swirling string samples. Listen on repeat and you might just forget - for a few minutes at least - about global pandemics and local lockdowns.
Review: The Super Spicy label has been on fire this year. So far, the imprint has released no less than 12 singles and EPs - most top-quality - and we're barely midway through April. Their 13th release of 2021 comes courtesy of debutant Caspar Ellis, who has duly delivered two all-action workouts that sit somewhere between beefed-up re-edits and loop-powered disco-house stompers. Opener 'Out The Door' laces select snippets of spoken word vocals (lifted from a classic disco record) and ear-catching sax motifs atop a bouncy and chunky disco-house groove rich in layered percussion, smooth bass and jammed-out electric piano riffs. 'Preacher & His Wisdom' is, if anything, even better, as Ellis turns a flash-fried disco-funk number into a stomping, celebratory peak-time house workout.
Review: Igor Gonya will be known to most as the man behind Russian deep house/deep tech labels Sundries and Lisztomania, but for this two-tracker he comes to Mexican funk and disco stable Super Spicy. It's a move that perfect makes sense, because the two cuts on offer are more organic than anything we've heard from him previously, with 'Fascination' an unashamed and very authentic-sounding homage to the Latin funk of the 70s, while 'Just Eight' looks to that era when disco was slowly morphing into 80s boogie. Essentially, this is the sound of an accomplished producer spreading his musical wings a little, and that's gotta be worth a listen!
