Review: Just in time for the seasonal change we're reminded by Super Spicy that it's still warm with Spicy Stew Vol1! Namely DaFunkah's "Olhos Coloridos" and Igor Gonya's "Bazaar", The Move adds some sweltering stringed disco to "Is This Rain" spun back out of control by The Velvet Stripes' "I Can't Hold You". Rayko surfs in with some Miami heat in the summery cool "Winners" alongside the Miami night drives synths of Monsieur Van Pratt's "The Hero". Find some old school vocal club tracks from Disco86 and something hi-NRG from Robert Ouimet & Dave Godin's "Fry My Love".
Review: Four very serviceable slices of contemporary funk and disco here courtesy of Mexico's Super Spicy Records, who describe their remit as "the hottest and spiciest of funk, disco and jazzy music around the globe". Monsieur Van Pratt kicks things off with 'Forever Funk', with its parping sax and familiar spoken vocal sample ("in the beginning, before there was house, before there was techno... there was funk"), Igor Gonya & Crack D bring the brassy Blaxploitation vibes on 'Two-Piece Orchestra', The Funk District take us right back to the soulful sound of early disco on 'Watcha Gonna Do' while Paul Older's 'Love' is camp, Euro-y and strutty, with more of a late 70s feel.
Review: The Super Spicy label has been on fire this year. So far, the imprint has released no less than 12 singles and EPs - most top-quality - and we're barely midway through April. Their 13th release of 2021 comes courtesy of debutant Caspar Ellis, who has duly delivered two all-action workouts that sit somewhere between beefed-up re-edits and loop-powered disco-house stompers. Opener 'Out The Door' laces select snippets of spoken word vocals (lifted from a classic disco record) and ear-catching sax motifs atop a bouncy and chunky disco-house groove rich in layered percussion, smooth bass and jammed-out electric piano riffs. 'Preacher & His Wisdom' is, if anything, even better, as Ellis turns a flash-fried disco-funk number into a stomping, celebratory peak-time house workout.
Review: If you're feeling the weight of world on your shoulders right now- and given the volume of bad news about, most of us are - then we'd highly recommend giving this new single from Ache Baez a spin. Warm, heady and rich in cute musical touches (jazzy electric guitar motifs, rubbery bass guitar, manipulated female vocal samples and pudding-rich Rhodes flourishes), title track 'Funk The World' is a fine fusion of deep house nous and Balearic-flavoured nu-disco sass. The Mexican producer continues in a similar tip on 'Fana Village', where snappy MPC house beats come laden with reverb-laden, early morning vocal samples, more ear-catching electric piano riffs and swirling string samples. Listen on repeat and you might just forget - for a few minutes at least - about global pandemics and local lockdowns.
Review: Pete Ellison takes his own advice on the title cut here - in fact, he could have called the track 'Keep It As Gosh-Darned Funky As Anything We've Heard So Far In 2022' and he'd still be in the clear! Centred around a nagging earworm of a guitar lick, a bubbling funk bassline and some sampled, James Brown-like vocal exhortations to "get up" and so on, with a dash of housey-housey piano thrown in for good measure, 'Keep It Funky' is a proper order to dance and no mistake guv'nor, with the rambunctious, uptempo soul strutter 'All You Gotta Do Is Ask' not far behind... excellent work!
Review: Igor Gonya will be known to most as the man behind Russian deep house/deep tech labels Sundries and Lisztomania, but for this two-tracker he comes to Mexican funk and disco stable Super Spicy. It's a move that perfect makes sense, because the two cuts on offer are more organic than anything we've heard from him previously, with 'Fascination' an unashamed and very authentic-sounding homage to the Latin funk of the 70s, while 'Just Eight' looks to that era when disco was slowly morphing into 80s boogie. Essentially, this is the sound of an accomplished producer spreading his musical wings a little, and that's gotta be worth a listen!
