Blah/Brute
Blah/BruteEXCLUSIVE
Blah - (4:48) 140 BPM Hot
Brute - (5:36) 140 BPM
Review: You're in for a slice of dubwise delight with this one as Rasper drops in on Sure State for a fantastic two piece special. On the A-side we are blessed with the thick subs and incredible spacious textures of 'Blah' whilst 'Brute' takes a more haunting approach. Layers upon layers of spooky atmospherics descend onto dubbed out drum selections and thunderous bass melodies. This one a must have for the dubstep community for certain!

Boogaloo Dub/Venture
Boogaloo Dub - (6:37) 140 BPM
Venture - (6:31) 140 BPM Hot
Review: Well, it's safe to say that Sure State have pulled off a cracker with this one, as Akhur is enlisted to bring forward a sub heavy two track dubstep single. We kick off with the "In your face" intensity of 'Boogaloo Dub' which packs a kick like a shire horse. As a composition this one leaps between pleasing, aquatic melodics and sharply oscillating scrapy synth patterns. On the flip we roll into the deeper sounds of 'Venture' which is a stepper's delight. Through a roughneck combo of super punchy drum processing and elongated sub bass leads we are treated to a perfectly composed dark roller. Great stuff from both Akhur and the Sure State team.

More Fire
More FireEXCLUSIVE
More Fire (Rasper VIP) - (5:42) 140 BPM
More Fire (DJ Variant remix) - (5:01) 140 BPM Hot
Review: Ohio based dubstep label make a solid return to releasing music with their first project of 2018 alongside dub prodigies Rasper and DJ Variant. The pair get to work on Rasper & OldGold's previously release 'More Fire' single, both supplying individual refuelings and working their magic. Rasper takes the VIP approach, layering multiple percussive melodies over smooth rolling subs. Variant then takes more of a darkened approach, focussing on growly bass synths and spacious atmospherics come the bridge. This is a great start to 2018 for the Sure State collective.

Sewer/Signal
Sewer/SignalEXCLUSIVE
Sewer - (4:48) 140 BPM
Signal - (5:01) 140 BPM Hot
Review: Sewer' is righty named because it's so low and gully it's defiantly belongs in the gutter, the emptiness of the soundscape pair with the slow stepping drums leave you with a notion of forward moving into the dark, echoing atmosphere until you meet that, modulated sub reminiscent of 16bit reptilian boss roars. 'Signal' is a wavy, pulsating with scratch beats and low elastic subs and the odd pang of light. A great EP for the darker collections.

Island Of Ys/U155
Island Of Ys - (4:34) 140 BPM Hot
U155 - (4:06) 94 BPM
Review: Would it be fair to tag the Sure State imprint as being the most consistent outlet for deep, cerebral dubstep nowadays? We like to think so. The hedonistic UK label simply will not stop pushing new artists through its doors, and the present Vexxe, a mysterious producer from the outer fringes of the scene, bursts through their catalogue with a fearlessness that has been lacking from the scene since the days of the post-dubstep fallout. To give you an idea, "Island Of Ys" is a dread march made up of militant drum rolls and strange, off-kilter melodies from outer space, while "U155" bursts its machine-gun percussion about the place like it's a free-for-all - the essence of the gnarliest, most skeletal grime available on the market.

Soundbwoy/Putrid
Soundbwoy - (3:36) 140 BPM
Putrid - (4:10) 140 BPM
Soundbwoy (Durandal remix) - (4:13) 140 BPM Hot
Review: Clerks has been MIA since 2015 but we have by no means forgotten his moody stance, or have we ruled him out from our list of bass batboys to keep an eye on in the future. He's back courtesy of Sure State and "Soundbwoy" couldn't make for a better, more poignant entrance back into the game - imagine a wall of bass landing hard on you...that's what this tune feels like. "Putrid", as the name suggests, is a darker, more muddy sort of cut that leverages the power of atmospherics to get its point across, whereas Durandai's remix of "Soundbwoy" bangs out some classic dubstep vibes that the likes of Coki would have been slapping down on the decks in the form of sweet-smelling dub plates back in the day.

Sigma 957EXCLUSIVE
Sigma 957 - (4:20) 140 BPM Hot
Sigma 957 (Durandal remix) - (4:13) 140 BPM
Review: After a pair of noticeable appearances for Phantom Hertz it's time for DJ Variant to step the game up further and further, with Sure State being the imprint to help him in his quest. "Sigma 957" is a rough, bubbling bass monster with a cold artillery of low frequencies and a drunken flow of half-step beats; the Durandal remix develops those bass waves further still, giving them more room to allow the murderous frenzy of beats to fill the space. Lil' tip, right here!

Nonstop - (4:54) 140 BPM Hot
Culture - (4:20) 140 BPM
Review: Last spotted on SumTing New changing the game, Houston's Lory continues to switch up sharp with two purring slabs of deep dub weight on Cleveland's consistently on-point Sure State. "Nonstop" is a green-fingered dream with its dense subs, rolling, restrained drums and precision dug spoken sample. "Culture" takes us deeper into the dance with more of a machine swing to the groove and immense atmospheres and roboticized human textures. Nonstop talent.

Trickle/Authority
Trickle - (5:19) 140 BPM
Authority - (4:48) 140 BPM Hot
Played by: Alert
Review: Sure State welcomes Denver's Dalek One to its catalogue, and it's becoming clearer by the release what it is that gets these guys going. The producer's two-pronged bass attack is as deep and swampy as anything you're likely to encounter within the dubstep game, with "Trickle" single-handedly managing to amalgamate aspects of industrial and wobble-step into one formidable groove. "Authority" is not exactly any less dark or ferocious and, in fact, the tune successfully leads us down the path of no return, a trip riddled with morphing bass tones and cavernous folds of FX. Little tip for you, right here!

Ieda/Simplo
Ieda/SimploEXCLUSIVE
Ieda - (5:03) 140 BPM Hot
Simplo - (5:05) 140 BPM
Review: HRMX's output has come mainly via the After Hour Audio crew, but these two new bass jugglers appear courtesy of the fledgling yet firmly on-point Sure Slate label. In fact, "Ieda" is one of our favourite bass nuggets this week; apart from the warm, placid harmonics cycling the groove, we love HRMX's use of the jungle breaks here because it reminds us of the early 00's broken beat scene in all its glory - jazzy, teched-up vibes that cut straight to the core. "Simplo" is a different sort of beast, but the artist's clever use of breaks is still very much part of the tune, and what we have is a glorious, dubwise stepper with plenty of tribalistic charm. TIP!

Neva
NevaEXCLUSIVE
DJ Variant - "Scratch" - (4:28) 140 BPM Hot
Neva - (5:29) 140 BPM
Clerks - "Past Away" - (4:15) 140 BPM
Review: The Sure State label is never shy to amalgamate new and exciting talent from the bass game. In fact, a look back at their catalogue shows us that they've given us nothing but new artists over the last few years, with all of them being equally impressive in terms of their approach to low frequencies. The time, DJ Variant and Clerks team up for one track each, supported by a collaboration from the two of them, the title track "Neva". That tune is particularly feisty in its approach, and its a classic dubstep sound moulded by more contemporary influences but, don't sweat, that bass is still high and mighty. Dj Variant's "Scratch" is a drum-heavy escapade into the darkest territories of dubwise bass, thanks to its proud dreadlock horns, while "Past Away" by Clerks is guided by a more street-ready grime approach. Killahs!

Abyss/Blood Sermon
Abyss - (3:32) 140 BPM
Blood Sermon - (3:36) 137 BPM Hot
Review: Korin Complex aka Jeff from Richmond, Virginia (yep, that's all we know!) is back with more stateside deep dubstep flavours. We're seeing more dope and paranoid beats from states in the US where kush 'ain't even legalised yet, so go figure! "Abyss" is testament to this fact with its rolling bass, delay drenched riddims and smoky/sinister atmospherics. Second offering "Blood Sermon" gets as serious as its title suggests; with an intro that sounds like an alien slithering down a sewer, the low end frequency then blasts incessantly beneath textured, industrial-esque field recordings. Disturbing!

Cloak
CloakEXCLUSIVE
Cloak - (3:15) 140 BPM
Switchblade - (3:44) 140 BPM Hot
Played by: Alex Greenhouse
Review: It's only Jax's second EP to date, but already the producer has instilled a sense of security on our behalf; the young bass producer sounds confident behind the mixing desk and totally capable of carving effective swings of mutant bass. "Cloak" is a pure UK hybrid, never veering too close to fully fledged dubstep, but still retaining a militant, driving sort of step that'll go down with utter ease in any bass rave. "Switchable" is deeper, murkier and more abrasive in its tone, where the bass stabs are sharp and devastating instead dog being warm and meditative.

Heart Of Soundsystem/Well Maybe Dub
Heart Of Soundsystem - (6:03) 140 BPM
Well Maybe Dub - (5:08) 140 BPM Hot
Played by: Alert
Review: Calling your track "Heart Of The Soundsystem" is a bold move... But it's a move that LA new-blood Tetrad executes with serious skill: the bassline pumping with thick dub blood, power surges through every cone with life as it worms between sub and higher octaves amid a dense array of Pablovian textures. "Well Maybe Dub" is a much deeper, denser construction with a slow-and-steady kick that's wrapped in ten-tog duffle subs. One for lift off, one for come down... Hearty on.

All Around You
Half A Block From Getting Shot - (4:39) 141 BPM Hot
All Around You - (3:49) 154 BPM
Review: Two contrasting slices of future bass work from the shadowy Paranoid Inc; "Half A Block From Getting Shot" plays with distorted harmonics and a deftly sliced Wu sample. "All Around You" flips the vibe for something more around the 150/160 territory; with its classic sample manipulation (think Todd Edwards after a huff of petrol) and a dicey, splicey jungle uplift this will sing to DJs of both 140 and 170 territories. Paranoid Inc should well live up to his name... After this everyone should be talking about him. All good things, mind.

Don't Mention It/Levitan's Calling
Dont't Mention It - (4:51) 140 BPM Hot
Levitan's Calling - (5:27) 140 BPM
Review: New Zealand warrior Dar Kist makes his Sure State debut with two grizzly, growling slabs of deep dark mechanical funk: "Don't Mention It" rides hard on a steppy kick arrangement as a detuned, distorted melody fights through the sonic fog to make itself heard. "Levitan's Calling" is just a tad more traditional with the seemingly endless array of bass textures making the main melodic presence over a swaggering halftime arrangement. Each bass fine-tuned with Dar Kist's dagger-like dynamics, dancefloor reactions to this will be nothing short of exultant.

Screwface - (5:29) 105 BPM Hot
Played by: Alert
Review: Montana murker Piecemeal returns to Sure Sate with two more precision executed sub jams, both taught with trippy samples and creative arrangements. "Mug" is the soundtrack to a grimy modern western that's yet to be made, all spooked out string twangs and a loaded sense of pensive danger. "Screwface" takes us to even stranger places with its bird chirp samples, tin-pan drum shots, demonic human elements and occasional bass burps that stretch into the foggy distance. Properly unique.

Culture - (5:05) 140 BPM Hot
Stealth - (5:09) 140 BPM
Review: Industrial strength deep dubstep to accompany sci-fi level night terrors. The grainy sample dialogue from a thriller film opens up "Culture" and soon gives way to low down bass therapy and sinister, future shock sound design. "State" is much more ferocious and has far more dancefloor dynamics with its rolling breakneck groove and fierce low-end pulsations, plus more haunting soundscapes that make you feel you're on the run from blood thirsty aliens.

Betrayal Moon/Canyon Echoes
Betrayal Moon - (5:34) 140 BPM
Canyon Echoes - (4:38) 140 BPM Hot
Review: Sure State's monthly dispatches are like clockwork. This month they've recruited emerging bass experimentist DMVU for two beautiful, emotion rich bass escapades. Last spotted on Abyssal, he's clearly taken a turn for the more cosmic, dreamy influences: All swoony and hazy, "Betrayal Moon" is awash with melodic devices played using the Oriental scale. "Canyon Echoes", meanwhile, would make the perfect montage soundtrack of a man running, slo-mo to the love of his life who's just about to board a plane without knowing how he feels about her. Does he get to tell her? Press play and find out.

The Avenue - (5:36) 140 BPM
Review: The US' Rasper earns himself a spot on his native Cleveland's Sure State label, a number one spot for deep and deadly American dubstep. "Claimed Dub" is exactly the sort of gear that we're vibing to these days, a hollow, levitating bit of percussion loosely held together by the gigantic swell of low hertz underneath it. "The Avenue" lightens the mood up slightly, but Rasper's inimitable style is still firmly in place; a dubgy, wondering sort of sway. Excellent and recommended to the fans of Mala and the like.

Grim & Rasper - "Defect" - (4:39) 85 BPM
Review: Yes, dubstep has even infiltrated the minds of peeps in Cleveland, and Sure State is the city's number one imprint for all things dark, broody and bassy. Grim is joined by Rasper, the latter having already appeared on SS, and the pair have conjured an impressive bundle of sounds on this EP. Grim alone drops "Dormant", a wonky, late-night missile sounding something like Mala on crack and Coki on tranquillisers, while the duo appear together on "Defect", a stuttering, raucous bass mutant for the final set times. Rough and tough!

Fire Department (Rasper remix) - (5:04) 142 BPM
Review: Angular bass steppery from US murker Piecemeal: "Fire Department" is a cutlass slice of instrumental grime, all one stretched one note bass tones over punctuated precision kicks and snares that double up when you least expect them to. The remixes are equally spotless; OldGold takes us down into the dungeon with a rolling Truth-style drum dynamic and sense of menace while Rasper brings the sirens and lets the drama of the atmosphere play the lead role. Smoking.

Review: After a string of free releases, Cleveland label Sure State go up a gear with their first proper release. Austin-based Oldgold takes the honours, and he does so with two timeless, wholly immersive sub-soaked gems that nod (slowly and methodically) at the likes of Kryptic Minds and DMZ. "Goose" is all about the trippy, reversed tone hook and live sounding snare hits while "Records" is a sample-littered nodder with slinky drums and occasional bass belches and bong sounds. Bubbly.
