Review: Released way back in 2007 and featuring a mix of lightly tooled-up re-edits and sample-rich, disco-heavy house jams, 'Modern Stalking' was one of Lovebirds' breakthrough EPs. This belated sequel certainly lives up to its lauded predecessor, even if it did take the German producer a fair old while to get round to recording it. Our pick of a very strong bunch is opener 'The Sun', where a deep, dubby house groove, spacey electronics and drifting vocal samples are overlaid with gorgeous orchestra samples and insane amounts of FX. 'Run' is a sprightly fusion of vintage boogie sounds and smooth house grooves, while 'Motion' sits somewhere between percussive deep disco and hazy house. Closing cut 'Reachin', meanwhile, is a chunky, slow-motion disco treat for warm-ups and spangled after-parties.

Lovebirds feat Uri Gincel
Review: German veteran Sebastian Doerling AKA Lovebirds teams up with jazz pianist Uri Gincel on this three-track EP for his own Teardrop label. 'Fly Away' gets the ball rolling, a mid-paced electronic groover underpinned by seriously hefty bass that sports some very fine 'pyow!' stabs, and that'll work well on darker disco dancefloors but could also find its way into progressive house sets, early doors. 'Playing Games' then continues in a similar, if slightly mellower vein, before things take a turn for the downtempo and dreamy on closer 'Tuna Melts My Heart'. All three are engaging, emotive and worth checking.

Review: Former Sonar Kollektiv contributor Stee Downes has enjoyed a long working relationship with Sebastian Doring AKA Lovebirds, with the pair first joining forces way back in 2011. Their latest joint effort is, as the title suggests, a pleasingly soulful and frankly joyous affair. Opener 'Freedom (Lovebirds Summer of 79 Mix)' sees Downes singing soulfully over a hybrid deep house/disco/electrofunk groove - all squelchy synth-bass, Nile Rodgers style clipped guitars and colourful synth sounds - while 'Big Mistake' is a brilliant stripped back slice of synth-powered electronic soul. Downes' effortlessly emotive vocals once again take centre stage on deliciously laidback Balearic soul number 'Prove', while the EP closing Sirs rework of 'Freedom' is a P-funk flavoured modern boogie classic in waiting.

Review: The original version of this Danielle Moore-voiced gem was one of the many highlights on D-Pulse's decidedly Balearic 2017 album "Sepentine". Here it gets a deserved single release, with a fresh rub from the producer behind the track - the dreamy, Balearic nu-disco chug of the "Saturated Mix" - being followed by a quartet of cheery, dancefloor-focused reinterpretations. Paxton Fettel steps up first, reaching for the jazz bass guitar and colourful synths on a jazz-funk inspired nu-disco take, before Kaspar Bjorke brilliantly re-imagines the track as a hypnotic, synthesizer-powered throb-job. His accompanying 'Dub' - ultra-dreamy and dubby in tone - is arguably even better, though Lay-Far's rich, bumpy and musically expansive broken house take is undeniably the EP's standout moment.

Review: Hamburg house hero Sebastian Doering returns with a new EP under the Lovebirds alias. The former Knee Deep member serves up "Lost" - a gorgeous pop-inflected number featuring Doering's inimitable style complete with Irishman Stee Downes' irresistible vocal delivery that's been heard recently on tracks by the legendary Phonique. Man of the moment Alexander Lay-Far follows up a great run of releases for Local Talk, Razor N Tape and Leng with a couple of terrific remixes: the Russian delivers the soulful and uplifting Club mix, followed by the smooth nu-jazz antics on the Dub mix - which were reminiscent of classic Atjazz or Bugz In The Attic.

Review: Stee Downes and Lovebirds' are old pals, and first joined forces for a 12" on Winding Road Records five years ago. Their joint effort on this fine EP, "Love's Like Dancing" is something of a cheery, mood-enhancing treat. A slick vocal number that should suit both disco and house floors, it sounds like classic Blackjoy fused with Lovebirds' usual brand of colourful deep house positivity. Crazy P man Jim Baron dons his now familiar Ron Basejam guise on the remix, delivering a bouncy nu-disco/deep house fusion. Lovebirds goes solo on the woozy, Rhodes-laden deep house haziness of "Feel The Bern", while the accompanying Talkbox Edit adds woozy, robotic vocals into the mix whilst retaining the track's original feel and structure.

Review: This is the second installment of a trilogy of EPs containing previously unheard music from Sebastian Doering aka Lovebirds. Balearica is an overriding theme here, however we get all kinds of interpretations of the term so there's little room for repetition. "Bells" is a slo-mo 303 odyssey and "Mysterious" is a standout deep house cut - slammin' kicks and warm, gushy synth layers. Elsewhere the focus is on disco, with "National" being a hot mess of breathy vocals, tropical-pop bass and cowbells, whilst the celestial string laden "In Between Clouds" wraps ups the package in nice neat bow.

Review: The Hamburg Years Part One is the first in a trilogy of EPs containing previously unheard music from Lovebirds man Sebastian Doering, recorded at various points over the last decade. It's a pleasingly varied selection, all told. While there are hints of his usual warm, humid deep house sound in "Coming Back For More" and "Percoe" - both blessed with sun-kissed guitar solos and just as many Balearic, boogie and disco influences amongst the grooves and rich musical touches - the EP also boasts a blazed, head-nodding take on instrumental hip-hop ("Feeltroit"). The release's other cut, "Promises", successfully doffs a cap to classic piano house and feelgood US garage, and is easily the strongest dancefloor contender.

Review: Having most recently been seen on Nang and Theomatic, Russian trio D-Pulse turn up on Teardrop Music for their latest voyage into the world of stargazing nu-disco. Built around bubbling, intergalactic synths and a mixture of female vocals and vocoder hits, "Keep on Running" is almost Balearic in its baggy sweetness. There's a strong remix package, too. Aside from an impressive live version - exclusive to this Juno edition of the EP - you get a fine chunk of lo-fi nu-disco funk from Datassette (check the vintage synths at the start), a tumbling, spacious deep house take from Andy Hart & Max Graef, and a decidedly cosmic chugger from Amberflame.
