Review: Dublin artist Sputnik One sends in four transmissions to Untold Stories, a label out of London doing its part in pushing more minimal sounds to the clubs. Having said that! Sputnik One lands with a bang, bombing the place with breaks, in your face atmospheres and pumping drum machine into dancehall action. True grit and a stoney UK edge creep their way onto a EP whose title track goes deep with a tonal and percussive harmony, as does the breathy vocals and siren hooks in "Quantum State". Inspired by a research program that investigated mindstate manipulation through extensive experimentation between 1953 and 1973 - MK Ultra goes there.
For Those Who Love (original mix) - (6:56) 129 BPM
To Me It's Funk (Plantae remix) - (6:15) 123 BPM
Review: London based minimal techno imprint The Untold Stories is relentless in its output of late but who can blame them when they've got a consistent run of talent at their disposal. After great releases by the likes of Suokas, Ivan Lopez and Franco Cinelli we've got ADVA from Bern, Switzerland with To Me It's Funk. The title track is the kind of quirky, deep house infused minimal full of cheeky micro-samples which reminds you of guys like Seuil or Le Loup. "Early Girl 420" is straighter, stripped back house for a Sunday morning after-hour session in a dark basement. "For Those Who Love" is a serving of dubby deep house with female vocal samples, rusty hi-hats and hypnotising chords. Finally the Plantae remix of "To Me It's Funk" is a low-slung, dusty and hypnotic slow burner reminiscent of Baby Ford or Melchior Productions.
Review: New London imprint The Untold Stories has been doing impressive things of late with some great releases by Suokas and Ivan Lopez. Now it's the turn of Franco Cinelli who serves us with "Sat Nam", a stripped and minimal DJ tool with a murmuring melody, throbbing bass and tape delayed drums that do most of work: causing some near psychedelic moments that will work some trippy magic on the dance-floor; guaranteed!
Review: Ivan Lopez is a Madrid based producer and he inaugurates The Untold Stories digital arm, based out of London. It's all pretty smooth and abstract minimal house here equally indebted to Perlon classics as it is to the current Romanian sound; and we like that! "Human Lineage" is dusty and glitchy but beneath is a tough bass driven groove that works as well on the dancefloor as it does on the couch. "Subviral" and "Natural History" are deep and hypnotic and are flattering tributes to the legendary Baby Ford. Finally the sombre off-beat of "La Villa Rosa" delves into the exotic with its classical sounds like Petre Inspirescu. Promising stuff.
