Review: Third Ear deserves kudos for putting together this massive, 28-track compilation of Thomas Brinkmann's released and rare material. It serves as a reminder that the veteran German producer has been one of the most influential - but sometimes overlooked - names in European house and techno. From the wild cut-ups and rolling snares of disposable "Sur Ace" and the noisy, ebm-style "2 Sun" to the lopsided, melancholy grooves of "Crazy" and "Souls", the scope and range of Retrospektiv is impressive. The compilation also succeeds in providing a reminder that Brinkmann's dance floor credentials are impeccable and the quirky "What You're Doin" and the toy town synths and gentle white noise of "Isch" are as impressive as anything that Akufen produced.

Review: Ricardo Villalobos remixes "Deardrum" from Alejandro Mosso's long awaited second album Isolation Diaries, recently released on hi-tech soul merchants Third Ear. The Chilean-German minimal maestro worked up a nine minute jam from this forty minute section. It moves from a gentle pattering of sounds into a full on Villalobos style groove; taut and slinky at the same time, but irresistibly funky. The jam then subsides into chattering noises before the groove begins again.

Villalobos worked up a 40 minute jam from this nine minute section, which moves from a gentle pattering of sounds into a full on Villalobos style groove; taut and slinky at the same time, but irresistibly funky. The jam then subsides into chattering noises before the groove begins again. Burnt Friedman's remix of "Isolation Diaries" is a slow burning/super funky jam with classic dub elements you've come to expect from the German artist: laced through the track together with a twisted and phased melody. The closing track from the album "Mounivers" completes this fine release.?

Review: Motor City techno legend Alan Oldham returns as DJ T-1000 and he's right at home here for British hi-tech soul merchants Third Ear. The guy behind such seminal imprints as Generator is in fine form and flying the flag for the timeless sounds from The Motor City: techno the right way! Starting out with the straight ahead, self aggrandizing groove of "1 Liquid Metal (Acid version)" which repeats the man's name continually, there's also "Shapeshifter" or "Air Berlin" which respectively are tough and funky: more reminiscent of the artist's classic sounds when he was formerly known as X-313 or The Neon Sex Fiend. The emotive "Marina 2" is the deepest and most uplifting offering on here and closes out the EP in nice style. Another fine release by techno's 'Renaissance Man'.

Review: It's been six years since US producer Alland Byallo's debut album was released, but not much has changed. That's not necessarily a bad thing; the former San Francisco resident excels at making soft-focused, organic electronic music and Bones Flesh is full of such moments. From the hazy ambience of "Looking Long" through the mushy chords and melodies of "Sah" and into the blissed out "Fool Me Twice", Byallo's second album is full of seductive, melodic textures. That's not to suggest that he shies away from the dance floor - as the warbling synths and rubbery groove of "Beguine" and the drunken bass of "Singularity" both demonstrate - but this album's real strengths lie in the blurred sound scapes and murmuring vocals of "Periphery" or on the haunting chord sweeps of "Tomb Tomb".

Review: Portuguese native Luis Sequiera has been living in London for a while, and this is his second EP for the iconic Third Ear label, a home to names like Thomas Brinkmann and Theo Parrish. These four tracks are perfect for the label, where Briddim conjures the perfect blend of house, garage and electronica, all engulfed into the producer's creative stream of thought. The title track is certainly our favourite, with its seductive loop coiling over itself continuously, but it's all utterly class and as usual, another masterpiece on this strong label.

Review: Radiation is not a typical Third Ear release, but Why Sheep aka Japanese producer Gaku Uchida has a long-standing relationship with the imprint, having released an album on Guy McCreery's label back in 2003. Both versions of "Radiation" favour experimental textures and extreme sonic diversions. Bluesy guitar shards are combined with bursts of noise and creaky effects on the first take, while the second version is just as warped. There, waves of spiky percussion and crashing drums provide the basis for jazzy licks and vocal chants. The remixes from Kare San Sui are less intense, with the first "Radiation" reduced to an atonal sound scapes and "A2" turned into a jazzy broken beat workout.

Review: One of the tracks from Lincoln Prevost's Ash release from last year gets the remix treatment. French house producer Dan Ghenacia delivers an offbeat groove littered with oddball vocal samples, while his colleague Shonky's approach is far darker and more jacking, led by powerful bass licks and an insidious vocal sample. The best versions of "Allez Ally" come from the author himself; the original version is a tripped out affair featuring a hypnotic organ solo, while the 'Deptford Dub' sees Prevost strip the groove back and introduce a series of subsonic bleeps that will floor even the most discerning club.

Review: Manuel Gonzalez has put out a diverse range of music, but this release for Third Ear is his most out there venture to date. "Fiber" is little more than a series of pitch-shifting tones, held together in the loosest sense by jarring rhythms, while "Meanwhile" is more subdued, its dubby beats seeing Gonzalez at his most laid back. The other tracks sit at opposing ends of the US producer's sound palette: "Extort" is a grainy banger, its rolling drums and stomping beats sitting somewhere between Omar S and Purposemaker, while "Mask" is a beautiful house groove, its chiming melodies unfolding over a fragile rhythm.

Review: Swedish producer Patrik Skoog throws a curveball on his debut album. Eschewing the dance floor for the large part, Exit Earth is located at techno's fringes. "Cluster 34" and "Inside Jupiter's Eye" are deep, space transmissions, while "Voyager, Part 1" and "Voyager, Part 2" start as atmospheric arrangements before evolving into teased out, acid-drenched dub techno grooves. There are some nods to Skoog's more conventional techno leanings - with the deep, metallic early-Sterac groove of "Cygnus A" and the droning "Death Of A Pulsar" impressing most - but as the white noise hiss and crackle of "Radio Emissions" shows, for this outing, Skoog remains at Earth's outer limits.

Review: The first Brinkmann release in three years under his own name finds him in decidedly playful form. Opening track "Tt" has a jittery rhythm and a sense of urgency thanks to its grinding bassline and trancey chord sequences. "On Edge" is even clubbier; behind a buzz saw bass that grinds, builds and drops there lurks a stop-start, abstract rhythm. Guy Martin also shows what happens when Brinkmann gives full vent to his melodic side. "Blackhill" is a gloriously mellow, melodic arrangement, its kooky hooks unfolding over gentle broken beats, but with the kind of processed clicks and whirrs that defines every Brinkmann release.

Review: Third Ear continue their fine form by giving us a remastered reissue of two remixes which have inspired just about everyone in the game. Both versions of "Falling Up" are given an ante up by Stefan Betke and although there isn't really a way to make these tracks any better, the man does a fine engineering job indeed! Carl Craig's take on it is almost too much of a classic to be described into words - if you haven't heard it then shame on thou! Theo Parrish has similarly created a timeless infusion of atmospheric broken beats and deliciously placed sample snippets.

Review: Third Ear have been responsible for some truly wonderful things over the years, with everyone from Jeff Mills to 808 State having had a part in the label's gradual but impressive progress. This time we welcome newcomers Ayota aka Ryuichi Iyota and Ski Oakenfull, a mysterious duo who do things just a little bit differently. "Llamas" opens the LP in true lo-fi grandiosity, that is, although we're talking downtempo range here, it nevertheless evokes feelings of sheer energy thanks to its suave percussion arrangements and jazzy bass lines. There are plenty of keepers in this 13 track marathon, such as "Sabor", a crystalline, sub-aquatic synth journey; "Niji", a mesmerising neo-hip-hop cut; or even "Airport" with its lounged-out, kick-the-fuck-back vibes; and "Hitotsu", a beautifully bizarre escapade into sparkling chimes and gentle synth squeals. But it's the spaces between the beat-laden tracks that really draw us into Ayota's sound - an odd but equally enchanting world of their own.
