Coming Up For Air (feat Sarah Whittaker-Gilby) - (6:19) 132 BPM
Review: Dubbed 'the godfather of breakbeat' amongst other things, Rennie Pilgrim is a man who likes to sonically challenge himself. He likes to try new sounds (always released through his own TCR imprint, natch) and here he's back with a new 11 track long player. Music-wise it's all about frenetic free jazz - well, on opener "Attention" at least. Elsewhere we have crunchy hard rock ("Sanctified"), breaky electroclash ("Gladiator") and even pumping funky house ("Celeb").
Review: Rewind! Rennie's taking us back - way back - to 2005 when he celebrated his influential breakbeat label's centennial release. It's a collabo affair as we see him team up with B.L.I.M for the cosmic organ-swinger "Yaffle" while the darker, acid-rusted roller "Bug" was penned with Roxilla. Available for the first time on digital, TCR are taking a serious trip down memory lane - and everyone's invited!
Review: Eight years old and still capable of knocking crowds sideways, JHz's "Jack Jack" was a huge hit for TCR back in 2005. Layered with pre-dubstep sines, techno-flavoured 4/4s and a nagging vocal loop, it's got every hallmark of a timeless heads-down bomb. "Timewaster" has aged equally well; rolling with the slinky, live bass thunder that Koma & Bones made their names for, it's a cool reminder of how bountiful the mid noughties breakbeat scene was.
Review: If anyone can pay homage to 90s rave-ups, it's world breakbeat champion Mister Pilgrem. Here we find him celebrating several shades of UK dancefloor history, celebrating everything that was great about old school hardcore, freaky acid, big beat and breaks. Armed with swashbuckling live drums and a classic synth hook that you'll be whistling for the next month, this is guaranteed party chaos. For those who were there back in the day, and those who are lapping these flavours up for the first time. "Drop It" like it's hot!
Fine Lady (Rennie Pilgrem Fine Funk mix) - (2:58) 120 BPM
Review: Rennie the re-animator - just when you think you know him, bang: along he comes with a brand new sound. Having nailed the nu funk and nu jungle he's now on some seriously sleazy US coastal bass tip. Hooking up with San Fran MC, "Fine Lady" is a bashy funk show that bangs with a filthy glitch habit and a tendency towards the two-step. Linuss himself serves up a bass mix which doesn't sound dissimilar to TCR's earlier releases. Rennie finishes the job with another interesting two-step. All wonky and off-beat with whispering synths in the background, it's yet another totally new sound from the breakbeat baron.
Review: Serious steppy business right here as Rennie gives PHNTM the green light to rough up his "Reanimator". Loaded with a sprightly spring and a cheeky surprise midway, this is the ideal cocktail of breakbeat and UK garage flavours. Each element sits in place perfectly, giving both the sexy two-step swing and the darker, raffish undertones an equal amount of time under the disco spotlight. If so much as one per cent of your set relies on a busted beat, make sure you include this.
Review: The veritable Godfather of breakbeat plunders his personal vaults to deliver a retrospective that doesn't only celebrate his own career, but neatly tracks the development of the genre in the process. Very few producers within breakbeat have managed to stay as relevant and up to date with the scene's twists and turns as Rennie... And none have done it with such skill. As such, this contains vibes from every era... Old school (the hardcore style "Cocaine"), breakbeat's most golden glory ("2 Freaks" with Blim & Chickaboo, "Black Widow" with Uberzone, the almost techno-like "Eraser") and upfront contemporary flavours such as the nu funk silliness of "One Time" and sultry sizzles of his latest smasher "Coming Up For Air". If you're a Pilgrem pilgrim then you may already have these but if you're not up to date with breakbeat's most influential men, here's the perfect place to start.
