Review: As previously mentioned on these pages, Timewarp Music's latest compilation comes in four volumes. This week, following #funk, #disco and #tropicaldub installments, we're in a #downtempo mood as label boss Timewarp Inc gathers together 16 very fine jams from the lower-paced side of the street. Highlights for yours truly include the hazy, driftaway neo-psych of Niles Philips' 'Hidden In A Starfield', the simple reggae groove of Groove Monkz's 'Promised Land' and Zamali's Massive Attack-like 'Zamali' but with influences spanning Balearica, trip-hop, jazz fusion and more, there's plenty to enjoy here for those that are watching their BPMs...

Vito Lalinga (Vi Mode Inc. Project) - "Watch" - (5:34) 81 BPM
Review: Timewarp Music's 'Freestyle 4 Funk' series reaches its ninth installment, which (somewhat confusingly) comes in four volumes, subtitled #funk, #disco, #tropicaldub and #downtempo. This is the #tropicaldub selection, for which you can essentially read 'reggae and dub' as label regulars like Prosper & Stabfinger, DJ Laurel, Vito Lalinga, Funky Destination and of course head honcho Timewarp Inc step up to pay tribute to the sound of JA - while still allowing, as with the #funk volume, plenty of scope for fusions with other styles, be they Latin (see DJ Laurel's 'Sambafunk'), Afro (see Lalinga's 'Vrye Denke') or hip-hop and breaks (see P&S's 'Popping The Clutch'), not to mention one fine slab of straight-up funk (Zamali's 'Kings & Queens') and, in the form of 'Simoon', the obligatory weirded-out closer...

DJazz .OrgOnite - "Yo Sco" - (6:51) 86 BPM

Review: Volume 9 in the series, so regular buyers should have a pretty good idea what to expect by now! For the uninitiated, it's perhaps worth stressing the 'freestyle' part of the title: no mere slavish pastiches of 70s-style funk, the 16 tracks here expand that original blueprint to encompass influences from hip-hop, house, breaks, Afrobeat, reggae and jazz. Highlights for this reviewer include the stuttered jazz-hop of Djazz.OrgOnite's 'Yo Sco', Umbo's fast and furious 'Foolin' Around' and label boss Timewarp Inc's own 'Not Bad Disco' - ironically one the album's most trad-style offerings - but you'll find your own for sure.

Review: It's always a pleasure to see a new excursion from Timewarp Music, a longstanding signature of dubwise legacy, with this latest album offering from Vito Lalinga being another jewel in their many-studded crown. From start to finish, the album offers a beautiful combination of reggae, funk and soul elements, focussing on blissful percussion, groovy bass melodies and awesome vocal ad libs to give us a non-stop dreamy landscape. This is without a doubt a project that needs to be taken in across a long play setting, but picking out highlights would mean having to lift up the catchy horn riffs of 'Watch', a super-groovy percussive inflections of 'Iris' and of course 'Vrye Denke', a gorgeous title track dipped in smooth jazzy fusion. Awesome work!

Bless Da Planet - (4:51) 82 BPM
Review: Ever-prolific Croatian producer Vladimir Sivc AKA Funky Destination, a regular on the likes of Timewarp Music, Kraak Records and Cold Busted, returns with what (if we're counting correctly) is at least his eighth album in 10 years. His music's spanned a range of styles including funk, breaks and Balearica over the years, but 'Bless Da Planet' finds him firmly in reggae and dub mode - and pulling it all off with surprising aplomb. Sivc may be no Bob Marley, Lee Scratch or Toots Hibbert, but this album's every bit as convincing as those "regional heroes"-type reggae bands you tend to stumble across by accident on Sunday afternoons at festivals, and that's no mean feat. Worth investigating for sure.

Review: With the words 'funky' and 'soul' appearing in the artist name and title you kind of know what to expect here, and rest assured there's no need to call in the Advertising Standards people because this long-player from Croatian producer Funky Destination, brought to you by Timewarp Music, does precisely what it says on the proverbial tin. Opening with the languid but hefty groove of 'I Don't Want You No More', the album operates largely at the more soulful end of the funk spectrum, veering occasionally into jazzier or more cinematic territory, with squalling Hammonds and sax much in evidence throughout. Vocals are by and large limited to looped samples but don't let that put you off - what you've got here are 49 minutes of real-deal shizzle that should scratch that funk itch for sure.

Review: Volume 5 in the series once more finds Timewarp Music boss Timewarp Inc remixing a choice selection of nuggets from the label's recent back catalogue. Given that it IS the fifth volume - and given how prolific Mr Stoumpos is generally - you likely have a good idea what to expect already, and suffice to say you're probably on the right lines, with the collection starting out mostly in Balearic/downtempo/soulful territory while reggae, hiphop and dub flavas become more pronounced as the collection progresses. For sure-fire danceability, start with the instrumental rubs of cuts from Prosper & Stabfinger and Jack & Jointz.

Review: Koka Mass Jazz may sound like a 17-strong jazz collective from Japan, but it's actually the nom du guerre of Bulgarian producer Konstantin Katsarski, whose CV includes releases on both Timewarp and Cold Busted. This latest long-player is sitting on our Broken Beat/Nu-Jazz page, but to be fair there's not that much "nu" about it and much of what's here could safely be filed under straight-up Jazz - which, by the way, is an indication of its quality, not a complaint! The format's interesting, too, featuring as it does an array of guest vocalists each of whose contributions is accompanied by a matching instrumental. 'Safe' is the standout for this reviewer, but there's much to love here.

Raclette - (4:27) 84 BPM
Review: Anyone checking out this long-player from Belgian producer Zamali is advised to stick with it, because the first two tracks - the moody trip-hop of 'Raclette' and the Balearic-leaning 'Never Again' - don't really prepare you for what's to come. The first hint you get of the album's overall vibe comes in the form of 'Low Key Factor', a midtempo slab of 'new old' funk-soul, after which 'Downtown Lagos' and 'Kings & Queens' pay tribute to the vibrant Afro-funk scene of the mid-late 70s before 'Chicago Soul' and 'Solar Quest' play us out on a more straight-up funk tip, the former having some rockier elements while the latter is pure Blaxpoitation-style squelch. Something for everyone then, eh?

Review: Belgian producer Zamali made his name with a string of re-edit EPs on Timewarp in the late 00s and early 2010s. These days he's focusing more on original productions, and now he returns to the Greek label with his debut full-length. Contemporary funk is his stock-in-trade, sometimes - as on 'Jack The Ripper' - veering towards the funk-breaks/funk-hop side of the street, other times leaning more towards "new old" homage vibes, but never shy of dropping in a familiar vocal sample here and there, or injecting a hint of disco, Afro or even house flava. Standouts for this reviewer include the Zapp/Cameo-esque 'Fatty Bump' and the jaunty, jazzy 'Gimme Some Faith'.

Tired Of This Game - (4:15) 83 BPM
Review: Croatian based producer Vladimir Sivc's Funky Destination project returns with his seventh solo studio LP, I Do Voodoo. At 17-tracks-large, Funky Destination mixes up all manner of grooves and funk through vintage drums, breaks and broken beat to hip hop, soul and boogie. Paying homage to '70s inspired sounds, there's reggae to be found in "Dubby Brother From Jamaica" and "Like A Lion" to displays of gospel in "Mo's Town", swinging disco in "It's In The Music" and percussive lounge-time jazz sessions in "Tired Of This Game". With the sound of guitars colliding with more Brazlian and tropical styles in "The Wicked One" and "Put Your Feet Down", there's still no going past this album's undeniable lead cut "I Do Voodoo".

Review: Another 16-track V/A from Timewarp, this time with a slight change of emphasis. Where previous installments in the 'Freestyle 4 Funk' series have largely ploughed a party-hearty, faithfully 70s-sounding funk furrow, Volume 8 operates in slightly more leftfield/eclectic territory, taking in everything from space age jazz-funk (Afternoons In Stereo's 'City Of The Future') and looping lo-fi Balearica (Teddy Presberg's 'Passion') to conscious female-vocalled dancehall (Timewarp Inc's 'Restart') and out-and-out jazz-fusion (Ivan Blanusa's aptly titled, uber-mellow 'Sunday Chill'). If you've picked up any of the earlier volumes, this latest might not be quite what you were expecting - but we think you'll enjoy it just as much. If not more!

Combining live instrumentation with his sampled-based style, FD dials up some downbeat tempos and dubbed-out horns in tracks like "Deep Into Brasil" to some undeniable hand percussion and jazz funk in "B.Disco Express". Afrikaanse Waansin - (6:10) 80 BPM
Review: Don't be fooled by the title here. While there's definitely a strong African influence to the six tracks featured on this EP from Greece's Timewarp, you don't need to be a lover of complex polyrhythms or breathy, chanted vox to appreciate them. Instead, ever-prolific Italian producer Lalinga looks to African funk and jazz of the 1970s for inspiration. 'Nasty Shit' comes at the sound from a hip-hop perspective and 'Rebellie' is the EP's most overtly house-leaning cut, while 'Afrikaanse Waansin' is the most traditional-sounding, but all six will work well on the floor and will have particular appeal for the breakers and jazz dancers.

Review: Long-player number four here from Croatia's Vladimir Sivc, better known as Funky Destination, and his third for Timewarp. The clue's definitely in the title, because it's largely soul rather than funk flavours that dominate - though we're talking sweaty 60s James Brown stompers rather than smoochy 70s love ballads, and admittedly that's one of music's most porous boundaries anyway! If you dig the likes of Speedometer, The Allergies, Skeewiff or Dr Rubberfunk you'll find much to enjoy here, with standouts including the blues harmonica-augmented 'Make It Fuzz' and the aptly-titled 'Bad Ass Jazz', while the string-laden 'Come Back To Me' has the most commercial, Amy-esque appeal.

As per the album proper, reggae and dub vibes predominate, with the well-chosen title track and the Afro-influenced 'Restart' particularly deserving of your attention, but for funkateers the standouts will be lead single 'Realistic' (which sounds a lot more funk/hip-hop-oriented when stripped of its doo-wop vocal) and the lounge-y, Hammond-tastic 'I'll Be Okay'.

Review: Album number four here from Angelos Stoumpos and friends. It comes hot on the heels of trailer single Realistic, but the latter's languid doo-wop soul vibes, however excellent, aren't really indicative of the album as a whole, which packs a lot more reggae and dub than it does soul and funk. Standouts include the dubbed-out 'Tweaky' and the skankin' 'Liberty Is Our Destiny', which sports an old school-sounding scratch break in the midsection and a dancehall vocal courtesy of Gobey, while funk and disco lovers are catered for with cuts like 'Discogirls', 'Afrofunk' and fine, jazz-tinged closer 'Not Bad Disco'.

Review: Dutch breakbeat/funk producer Arjen Flipsen, better known as Niles Philips, returns to his regular home of Timewarp Music with four tracks of dusty, lo-fi hip-hop. 'Other People' takes extensive samples of spoken vocal that sound like they've come from a 1950s/60s educational film, and places them atop a backing that wouldn't sound out of place on a western soundtrack. 'Lovers' Battle' marries chipmunk'd R&B vox, crunchy beats and wonked-out strings, 'Compassion Level' loops up smoochy 70s soul vox over a hefty midtempo breakbeat, while closer 'When It Comes Down' is similar in style to the rest but with a more dubwise feel.

Review: It's been four years since Timewarp Inc main man Angelos Stoumpos last offered up a remix retrospective. This fourth volume in his "Remix Sessions" series is therefore long overdue. As usual, you'll find tons of killer cuts to set the pulse racing, from the Sitar-laden mid-tempo skano of Stoumpos's remix of Supersan's "Suez" and the dubbed-out warmth of his version of "Some Melodic Jazz" by Erkos Quartet, to the Afro-infused bounce underpinning a superb rework of Banderas's punk-funk-tinged "Handbrake" and the sun-kissed trumpet solos and crunchy funk breaks of Mr Gagun's "Funky Dog". In other words, it's another hugely entertaining collection of remixes from the Athens scene stalwart.

Review: Dutch producer Niles Philips has been active on the "new old" funk scene since the mid-00s. He's released a string of EPs on the Timewarp label, along with a collection of his remixes for other artists, and it's to Timewarp he returns with his debut artist album. His particular brand of funk is scuzzy, fuzzy and quite guitar-heavy, more redolent of late 60s/early 70s bands like War, Rare Earth or Sly & The Family Stone than glitzier outfits like Earth Wind & Fire or The Ohio Players. But if searing Hammonds battling their way through a psychedelic haze are your idea of fun you're gonna love it, while 'So Good So Tight' veers towards future R&B territory and 'Whiskey Wool & Fireplaces' adds a twist of jazz.

At once sounding warm and familiar and from a far away planet; shades of dub, Cuban, Latin and Arabic all fused with Balearic charm and precision studio polish. Review: Greece's Timewarp imprint is a wild and all-embracing label, preferring to focus on GOOD music rather than specific sub-genres with a propensity to die out and become all too sterile. This is true of the genres they deal with, of the reissues they decide to pursue, but also of the artists they decide to recruit. Newcomer Jazzprofilactika is given his debut with this mighty nine-tracker spanning all things 'jazzy'. Much like the sounds heard on labels like BBE or Brownswood, this artist has nailed the formula when it comes to merging influences and chopping up suave samples. The majority of the music here is organic, which is heard through its improvisational nature, but it will undoubtedly appeal to fans of everyone from Floating Points to Moodymann. Subtly pushed forth by low levels of house grooving, this is the perfect material for the early sets, or for the house parties. A mighty touch from a mightily attractive new artist!

Listening to these 13 tracks it's clear to see that he's found a new freshness to his sound. Highlights include the sombre, wafting lament "Eames In Dub", the wah-wah laden "Redondo Beach" that gets its 70s strut on and the wistful, breezy Balearica of "King Of The Iron Coast". So then, in short; a whole new shiny chapter for Vickers.

Teddy Presberg - "Nancy" (Quasamodo's Dubbed mix) - (3:57) 84 BPM Hot
Review: Greece's Timewarp label continues to plunder their disco reserves whilst flashing the proverbial funky cash willy-nilly. Yes we have another 16 fresh cuts (admittedly down from the last instalment's 31 so they should maybe think about tightening their wallets a little) on Freestyle 4 Funk 5. Timewarp is once again selector and some the many highlights he chosen here include the digi dancehall headnodder "Fyah Fyah" by Balkan Riddims, Jyal Funk's pulsating breaky electro rework of "Jamaican" by Funky Destination and the breathy jazzy shuffle of "Sensitive Kind" by Truez.

Review: Greek disco producer Timewarp teams up with an anonymous pal from funk blog extraordinaire, The Zuzu Club, for this compilation that's exclusively about 'great and fresh' new music. Although there's no theme they do look across the water to the Caribbean for some inspiration on the likes of the laid back reggae lament of "Theory Of Revolution" and the smooth dancehall grooves of "Baby Got Me Good". Elsewhere we encounter vintage electro-swing on Pavlov's "Moving Next Door", retro lounge-rock on "Jesu" By Loopez and even some good old big beat on "Jungle Boogie" by Chinese Man.

Song 4 Lou - (3:51) 82 BPM
Review: We've hardly heard from Timewarp's Leon since last summer, but now he's back with possibly his most commercial offering yet. "People Like Fashion" is an unashamed party soul ditty, with campy, sing-along recitals of big fashion label names. Sure to get people pulling some moves even the stiffest dancefloor. Elsewhere the title track is more authentic 80s electro-boogie, "Reality" is unreal soft focus 70s disco and "Song For Lou" is like Chris Rea soloing over a hazy soft porn soundtrack. What's not to love?

Theory Of Revolution (feat Georges Perin - dub version) - (8:06) 84 BPM
Review: After a slew of remixes and reversions and revisions, Greek funk dub troupe Timewarp return with two beautiful originals. "Theory Of Revolution" is a warm, organic groove that's coated in smoky croaky vocals from Georges Perin and peppered in guitar and melodica instrumentation. "Liberty Is Our Destiny" is a more upbeat track that's highly reminiscent of Fort Knox Five with its uptown breaks, nifty scratching and dubby washes. Complete with two dub versions, Timewarp leave no sonic stone unturned right here.

Review: There's no need for a funky bailout for Greece's Timewarp label as they have more than enough in reserve. So much so in fact, that they have rustled up another 31(!) fresh cuts for this, their latest compilation. Highlights include Niles Philip's quirky stop-start nu-funker "What'Cha Doin", the Euro/reggaeton hybrid weirdness of the Congo Sanchez remix of "Choices In Life" by AfroQBen and the bonkers electro-pop skank of "Blast" by good old Quincy Jointz (as remixed by Kowalski).

Review: Greg Vickers aka Afternoons In Stereo is a master at the art of electronica and all things downtempo. Over the years, the majority of his output has come out through the Timewarp label, to which he returns to at present with Retrospective, a collection of his own favourite productions from the last ten years. In there, you'll find his inimitable take on IDM and electro, most vividly represented by classics such as "El Puma", "Metrosexual", or the utterly memorable "Tinto Brass", a favourite around these parts.

Groove Monkz - "Promised Land" - (4:59) 80 BPM
Review: Unhappy with the amount of re-edits and mash-ups in the nu-disco scene, Timewarp are doing something about it! That 'something' is the Lemon Sorbet series of mixes curated by the one and only Quincy Jointz. Featuring some of the finest original compositions, many until now unreleased, from leading nu funk artists. Highlights of volume 5 include the retro new jack urban beats of Jointz own Flashbaxx remix, Ashley Slater (Freak Power)'s low-slung and slinky Al Green cover "Stay Together" and the cool, slap-bass heavy, Latino disco jam "New York To Brasil" by DJ Colour C2. Who said originality was dead.

Review: Dutch culinary dabbler Niles Philips is back with an album that compares his remix skills to his cooking abilities. Compiling a selection of his finest reworks of artists such as Afternoons In Stereo, MustBeat Crew, Timewarp Inc and Trotter, he certainly serves up a tasty big beat buffet. Highlights of the 14 tracks include the bluesy afternoon haze of "Passion", the electronic spikiness of Latin lounge classic "Perhaps Perhaps Perhaps" and the hip-house/ ska-hop party anthem, "Cop Dat Shit".

Review: Here we have Timewarp Inc, the in-house production team at Athenian funk/nu-disco label Timewarp, and they've decided to delve into their mighty back catalogue and well, remix it. Hence, "The Remix Session Vol 1" - a collection boasting 14 prime cuts including the moodily hypnotic funk loops of "Anti Pop Song" by Ancient Astronauts, the forlorn Two Tone vibes of "Smile On Your Face" and the machine-like breaky funk goes synthy disco sizzler "Da Gypsy Groove" by Leon.

Review: Funky Destination's "Down To The Music" was release to much applause last October. Now their Greek nu-disco label Timewarp has decided to extend the party by releasing a host of new mixes of the piano-led stomper, and who can blame them? There's nine different takes supplied here, the best including Quincy Jointz's urgent jazzy souler which is also turned into a spellbinding minimal tech-house anthem by Valique.

Thud (Widosub remix) - (4:44) 80 BPM

Review: It's been a while since we heard from Danny Ward, at least under his Dubble D alias (he's better known for his house productions under the Moodymanc moniker). "Thud" is a pleasing blast from the past - a rolling, dancefloor-friendly workout that matches snappy, MPC-programmed hip-hop beats with warm Rhodes codas, subtle whispers of jazz flute and carefully-chosen vocal samples. The remixes are tasty, too, with EZ Icarus recruiting MC J Conroy for an uptempo party-rocking workout, Tosses & Verdez dropping some tasteful breaks, and Widosub turning the original into a warm, jazzy, broken beat number.

MustBeat Crew - "Be Cool" - (3:43) 89 BPM
Review: We're not quite sure why this German funk meister is so enthralled by lime sorbet in particular (other than that it tastes nice), but that is what he has chosen to dub his popular mix series. This third installment packs in a hefty 18 tracks and is available both as a continuous mix and as individual tracks too. Highlights include the mini Moog workout of QZ's remix of James Beige, the high-energy riff-o-rama of "Monsterjam" and the effervescent disco-funk of "This Sound".

Sunday Jam (feat Goran Schmidt - Audio InFunktion remix) - (3:51) 86 BPM
Review: Although hailing from Germany, DJ Umbo is now running his disco breaks empire from Croatia. Having developed a cult following with a series of remixes on labels like Goodgroove, now he appears to have settled with Greece's Timewarp. His latest release for the Hellenic funk crew features two tracks - the funky sax workout "Sunday Jam" and the urgent groove attack of "Keep That Beat On". Basement Freaks remix the former into a pulsating disco banger, while on the latter Caytaro deliver a sizzling live jam version.

Teddy Presberg - "Outcries From A Sea Of Red" - (7:24) 81 BPM
Review: Canadian producer, Afternoons In Stereo, has been on hiatus since 2011, but it hasn't stopped his name appearing on a host of remixes of other acts ever since. Now the Athens-based Timewarp label has decided to collect the best of all these appearances in a one-stop-shop release. There are 11 top-notch tracks here. Some choice picks include the loungey bass grooves of "Growth Strategies", the reggae funk of "Jamaican", the retro ghetto stomp of "Step On", the almost electro-Bhangra of "Rose Of Ispahan" and the authentic disco workout "Funky Dog". A perfect stopgap release whilst we wait for this prolific producers new studio album, due 2013.

Liquid Gold
Choices In Life (feat Batch) - (4:31) 82 BPM
Review: Portland-based beatmaker AfroQBen (geddit?) modestly describes himself as "the funk master" and "a prolific producer in perpetual audio-visual motion". While that may be a little over the top, he's certainly delivered a solid debut album for perennial funksters Timewarp. As is his style, Liquid Gold offers sturdy, floor-friendly hip-hop jams in a variety of rudeboy styles. So, there are forays into afro-cuban funk-hop, dubstep and reggae, alongside a pleasing array of uptempo funk and soul jams. There's nothing particularly new about any of this, of course, but it's such a fun and well made album that it would be churlish to be too critical.
