Review: Back after a long absence, funk outfit Timewarp Inc return with the slinky, sassy soul of "Yuil Disco Breaks". With a live version, recorded by the band as the Djtzinas & The Redgreen Wood Soundsystem, going up against more studio-bolstered, breaks-heavy mixes, as well as a cosmic rerub by Zamali, the funk shines through on each version on this tight single from Timewarp.

Review: Prosper & Stabfinger bring us vocal and instrumental remixes of a track taken from last year's 'Theory Of Revolution' album. Well, sort of: the original album version, 'Yuil Disco Breaks', was a 'new old' funker in the Dap Kings/Speedometer vein, but here Messrs P&S scatter some disco dust over the track and transform it into an energetic workout built with mirrorball-equipped dancefloors firmly in mind. The block party-style rap vocal from The Mage won't necessarily suit everyone, admittedly - but don't worry, because if it doesn't then head for the instrumental and let those killer Dave Lee-esque raygun disco stabs do the heavy lifting instead!

Review: Jayl Funk has been turning out the party-starting funk grooves for well over a decade now and this latest pair, brought to you by Timewarp Music, won't disappoint fans of his previous work one iota. 'You Gotta Feel It' opens with a rave-y warping synth riff, then brings in pianos and female vocal wails before finally bursting out in all its funk-fuelled nu-disco glory. The pop-style vox might be a bit much for some but there's no doubting the bassline or the horns work... so it's just as well there's also an instrumental included, isn't it? 'Step Into It' features the same vocalist but is a little more laidback in feel.

Review: While most funk, blues or soul minded producers will instantly dive to the sampler for inspiration, here we find an authentic document of freshness. A guttural bluegrass hoe-down written by Tony Bate (with his tongue just slightly in cheek), Dubstax has taken the folky, Howlin Wolf style original and added a lolloping bassline, strutting beats and a series of dubbed out synths to create the perfect fusion of songwriting techniques, old and new. Serious party vibes... We'd advise you to wiggle it. Just a little bit.

Review: Timewarp Music is an independent Greek record label since 2004, whose musical style moves through funk and nu-disco through to dub and breaks. Label boss Angelos 'Timewarp' Stoumpos now presents Funky Destination a.k.a Vladimir Sivc: the funkiest project based in Croatia's Istria region. He is back with his third full length album for the label. We Are All Shining Stars features a dozen or so funk and soul edits mainly, but not limited to rock 'n' roll, new nu-skool breaks and a bit of ol' fashioned soul to boot. From the block rockin' breaks of "Boom Bang", the super lo-slung "J.J's On Meskaline" or the sultry slo-mo balearica of "On My Way To Rio" - this is indeed one well funky destination.

Review: It's always a pleasure to see a new excursion from Timewarp Music, a longstanding signature of dubwise legacy, with this latest album offering from Vito Lalinga being another jewel in their many-studded crown. From start to finish, the album offers a beautiful combination of reggae, funk and soul elements, focussing on blissful percussion, groovy bass melodies and awesome vocal ad libs to give us a non-stop dreamy landscape. This is without a doubt a project that needs to be taken in across a long play setting, but picking out highlights would mean having to lift up the catchy horn riffs of 'Watch', a super-groovy percussive inflections of 'Iris' and of course 'Vrye Denke', a gorgeous title track dipped in smooth jazzy fusion. Awesome work!

Review: According to Timewarp, Sorraia hail from another planet. Perhaps they do? Their stunning instrumental sounds are beguiling. At once sounding warm and familiar and from a far away planet; shades of dub, Cuban, Latin and Arabic all fused with Balearic charm and precision studio polish. The eerie melodica echoes of "Adenai", the Saharan bumps and blasts of "Cadiz", the serious eastern mysticism but raw funk "Oulata" and the sliding jazz tinged blues of "Blues Rose" are just some of the highlights. Essential for fans of the Israeli funk movement such as Markey Funk.

Review: One time funk/breaks producer turned party edit king, Valique, is not one to be burdened with the responsibilities that come with artistic credibility. This guy just wants to have a good time, and here on V-Shaped, a compilation of some of his best remixes, he provides 12 demonstrations of this philosophy. Highlights include his deliciously dreamy synth-disco rework of Kraak & Smaak's "How We Gonna Stop The Time", the accelerated swing/jazz minimal house of the "Dark Jazz Dub" by Nekta and his tough electro-funk remix of "Disco Life" by Basement Freaks. An impressive back catalogue indeed!

Review: Timewarp Music welcomes aboard a new artist to their roster in Jazznut aka Dmitry Khlynin. Based out of Russia, the name suits him, as if he's some kind of mad professor stewing over a mixed pot of jazz and funk, some rock and trip hop alongside some big beats business, breaks and a healthy dose modern electronics. Across 11 peak time tracks there's stoner grooves and psychedelica in "Keep Moving", a New Yorkan diva session in "Sun Goes Down (feat Kali Malia)" to space cowboy cosmic disco in "Sinful Gold". A cinematic soundtrack for a pulp fiction fanatic.

Review: Hellenic disco label Timewarp has been riding the boogie train for many years now, but when will a cut from label boss Angelos Stoumpos (aka Timewarp) ever arrive? Well now, that's when! Here he finally three jams, all connected by one common root - dub. Stoumpos is joined by half Greek/half French vocalist Georges Perin on opener, the fruity and fresh "Tropicaliente". Elsewhere, "Reggae On Dope" is thrilling mish-mash of gypsy rhythms and panpipe action and the smooth "Dub in Disco" is just that - hazy 4/4 spaced out grooves. There's even an instrumental version of the title track included to keep those headnodding vibes going.

Review: The second collaboration between these two funkateers, "Tonight" is a slick '70s blaxploitation-themed stomper that's nicely aided by some studio beats that bolster the brass, guitars and sampled vocals underpinning the track. Lebrosk turns in a more hip-hop shaped revisit complete with plenty of dub-delay, while German nu-funk breaks powerhouse Telephunken delivers raw drums and simple sine synths on his commanding rejig.

Review: Greece's Timewarp imprint is a wild and all-embracing label, preferring to focus on GOOD music rather than specific sub-genres with a propensity to die out and become all too sterile. This is true of the genres they deal with, of the reissues they decide to pursue, but also of the artists they decide to recruit. Newcomer Jazzprofilactika is given his debut with this mighty nine-tracker spanning all things 'jazzy'. Much like the sounds heard on labels like BBE or Brownswood, this artist has nailed the formula when it comes to merging influences and chopping up suave samples. The majority of the music here is organic, which is heard through its improvisational nature, but it will undoubtedly appeal to fans of everyone from Floating Points to Moodymann. Subtly pushed forth by low levels of house grooving, this is the perfect material for the early sets, or for the house parties. A mighty touch from a mightily attractive new artist!

Review: It's been a while since we heard from Danny Ward, at least under his Dubble D alias (he's better known for his house productions under the Moodymanc moniker). "Thud" is a pleasing blast from the past - a rolling, dancefloor-friendly workout that matches snappy, MPC-programmed hip-hop beats with warm Rhodes codas, subtle whispers of jazz flute and carefully-chosen vocal samples. The remixes are tasty, too, with EZ Icarus recruiting MC J Conroy for an uptempo party-rocking workout, Tosses & Verdez dropping some tasteful breaks, and Widosub turning the original into a warm, jazzy, broken beat number.

Including licks of live bass from Greek-born Grammy winner Panagiotis Andreou across this mini-LP, Therapy Sessions goes most electronic and new age (Morcheeba-style) on numbers like "Why" and "Getaway" - whereas your clearly defined pop numbers come out of tracks like "What Do You Want" and the funky "Out Of Control". Furthermore, get some dope percussion and freestyle lyricism from Maya Siozou in "Do That Thing".

Review: Third time around for this, the fourth long-player from Greek producer Angelos Stoumpos. 'Theory Of Revolution' first came out in late 2019, with an instrumental version released just a few weeks later; now here comes a bumper package of remixes. Some of these rubs, like RSN's take on 'Liberty Is Our Destiny' or the Jackz N Jointz rub of 'Realistic' have had previous single/EP releases, others are brand new, and with the 26 assembled mixes running the gamut from reggae, hip-hop and funk to house and disco, it'd be a VERY hard-to-please selector indeed who couldn't find something suitable for their floors here...

Review: It's been just a month since the loose musical collective centred around Greek producer Angelos Stoumpos released their fourth long-player 'Theory Of Revolution', and now here comes what is effectively Part Two, featuring instrumental versions of seven of the original 19 tracks. As per the album proper, reggae and dub vibes predominate, with the well-chosen title track and the Afro-influenced 'Restart' particularly deserving of your attention, but for funkateers the standouts will be lead single 'Realistic' (which sounds a lot more funk/hip-hop-oriented when stripped of its doo-wop vocal) and the lounge-y, Hammond-tastic 'I'll Be Okay'.

Review: Album number four here from Angelos Stoumpos and friends. It comes hot on the heels of trailer single Realistic, but the latter's languid doo-wop soul vibes, however excellent, aren't really indicative of the album as a whole, which packs a lot more reggae and dub than it does soul and funk. Standouts include the dubbed-out 'Tweaky' and the skankin' 'Liberty Is Our Destiny', which sports an old school-sounding scratch break in the midsection and a dancehall vocal courtesy of Gobey, while funk and disco lovers are catered for with cuts like 'Discogirls', 'Afrofunk' and fine, jazz-tinged closer 'Not Bad Disco'.

Theory Of Revolution (Jay Papa instrumental remix) - (3:19) 94 BPM
Review: Greek producer Timewarp Inc's 'Theory Of Revolution' is fast approaching evergreen status. First out as the title track of his fourth album back in November, this funk-soul-reggae fusion was then given a full-on dub makeover on February's EP of remixes and instrumentals, and now it's back in single form, with Jay Papa's vocal and instrumental rubs heading in the opposite direction and toning down the reggae and dub aspects. You end up with a contemporary funk/soul cut that has the same kind of crossover appeal as Pharrell, Aloe Blacc or Cee-Lo Green - though whether it can emulate their commercial success remains to be seen.

Review: Three mixes to choose from of this belter from Croatia's Vladimic Sivc - better known as Funky Destination, in which guise he's released seven albums in the past 10 years. In its Original form, 'The Soulway Players' has male gospel backing vox, diva shouts namechecking Memphis, New Orleans, Chicago and New York, and most importantly a sense of repressed energy - like the club's gonna go crazy any second now, which means it'll be a great set-builder. The Extended Mix gives the fuzz guitar more room to breathe while Louie's House Mix sticks a 4/4 kick underneath, but in pleasingly subtle fashion.

Review: Koka Mass Jazz may sound like a 17-strong jazz collective from Japan, but it's actually the nom du guerre of Bulgarian producer Konstantin Katsarski, whose CV includes releases on both Timewarp and Cold Busted. This latest long-player is sitting on our Broken Beat/Nu-Jazz page, but to be fair there's not that much "nu" about it and much of what's here could safely be filed under straight-up Jazz - which, by the way, is an indication of its quality, not a complaint! The format's interesting, too, featuring as it does an array of guest vocalists each of whose contributions is accompanied by a matching instrumental. 'Safe' is the standout for this reviewer, but there's much to love here.

Review: A collective of musicians based in Ontario, Afternoons In Stereo let their many influences shine through on this latest and very lovely album. Taking in nu-jazz, Latin funk and a variety of soulful and downtempo sources, they manage to meld styles perfectly - one listen to "Promise" for example will show their depth and the richness of their songs, taking in St. Germain beats, live double bass and flutes as well as a sun-kissed vocal chorus. Uptempo instrumentals like "West End Satori" are also a delight and give the players a chance to show off their jazz-honed skills. "El Puma" even sounds like a long-lost Kool and the Gang tune and nicely rides a sample from the Lafayette Afro Rock Band's "Hihache". A pleasing mix of styles and full of soul, this is a surprising and hugely satisfying release.

Review: Volume 5 in the series once more finds Timewarp Music boss Timewarp Inc remixing a choice selection of nuggets from the label's recent back catalogue. Given that it IS the fifth volume - and given how prolific Mr Stoumpos is generally - you likely have a good idea what to expect already, and suffice to say you're probably on the right lines, with the collection starting out mostly in Balearic/downtempo/soulful territory while reggae, hiphop and dub flavas become more pronounced as the collection progresses. For sure-fire danceability, start with the instrumental rubs of cuts from Prosper & Stabfinger and Jack & Jointz.

Review: It's been four years since Timewarp Inc main man Angelos Stoumpos last offered up a remix retrospective. This fourth volume in his "Remix Sessions" series is therefore long overdue. As usual, you'll find tons of killer cuts to set the pulse racing, from the Sitar-laden mid-tempo skano of Stoumpos's remix of Supersan's "Suez" and the dubbed-out warmth of his version of "Some Melodic Jazz" by Erkos Quartet, to the Afro-infused bounce underpinning a superb rework of Banderas's punk-funk-tinged "Handbrake" and the sun-kissed trumpet solos and crunchy funk breaks of Mr Gagun's "Funky Dog". In other words, it's another hugely entertaining collection of remixes from the Athens scene stalwart.

Review: It's been ten years since disco and funk fusionist Angelos Stoumpos and his band of musical merry men delivered the first Timewarp Inc album, Dub My Funky Groove. Ever since, they've been in-demand on the remix circuit. Having previously put out two volumes of the Remix Sessions to showcase their reworks, here they offer up a third instalment. There's plenty to get excited about, from the dense, Latin-influenced tribal disco-house madness of their remix of Dublex Inc's "Tango Forte", and a rubbery rework of DJ Maxx and Gabb's "Afrovibes", to the bass-heavy nu-funk of their 'short remix' of Deep Dive Corp's "Blue".

"Funky Rotator" sets the tone, offering just the right balance between spiralling Hammond funk, shuffling drum breaks and melodic sweetness. Mind you, with the title like "The Peace Song", the lyrics were hardly going to be "war is amazing and love is rubbish" now were they? A real beachside bomber, this; lean back as far as you can and immerse yourself in the deep slinky bassline, well executed toasting, live instrumentation and swinging house beats. Review: Funky, jazzy instrumental vibes with a hint of Latino influence are what we get from Timewarp Greece this time out. Soupasoul's remix (for such it is) comes in two parts, a nod to the days when that's how longer tracks were served up on vinyl. Part 1 foregrounds the muted trumpet part that serves as a lead line, underpinned by a resolutely funky b-line and augmented by a nagging keyboard riff. Part 2 opens with an extended percussive break, then revisits all the same parts but in a dubbier style, with the parping trumpet only really making an appearance towards the end.

Review: From Hungarian collective The MustBeat Crew comes this new release on Timewarp: the mid-tempo, body-popping funk of "The Feedback". Bolstered by percussive guitar loops, scratches and huge shimmering chords, it's a delightful tune that sits nicely between the nu-disco and instrumental hip-hop racks. On a more breaks tip, Niles Phillips adds a bucket load of bass to his mix, while the Gemini Brothers get fresh on their Rhodes-heavy nu-funk workout.

Review: The Worldstylers (a brand new act from Savages Y Suefo) deliver two absolute party-jammers. Exploring the creative potential of blues and electronic fusion, both "Put It Right Here" and "Gimme One More" are riddled with rich vocals, heaving harmonicas and big swinging bass. The former is the stomper of the pair with a jacking, 4/4 stomp while the latter takes the nu-funk route with swinging breakbeats and a cool-but-confident groove. Both absolutely smash it. Throw in myriad remixes from the likes of Ordiman (filtered funky house) and Niles Philips (Thievery Corporation style slinky silk) and this really is a special package.
