Review: Mixes to suit a wide range of tastes on this latest offering from Greece's Timewarp Music. 'Good Love' is a summery slice of Afro-flavoured pop in its Original form, before Omegaman gives it a reggae-fied makeover. Tom Drummond's remix then adds a funkier edge, while Jayl Funk's heavier pass is more one for the funk-breaks crowd, though the dubwise bassline means this mix, too, could find its way into reggae-driven sets. The most dramatic rework, though, comes from Australia's Mind Electric, who ups the tempo by several notches, adds pianos and transforms it into a Saturday night house stomper.

Review: As previously mentioned on these pages, Timewarp Music's latest compilation comes in four volumes. This week, following #funk, #disco and #tropicaldub installments, we're in a #downtempo mood as label boss Timewarp Inc gathers together 16 very fine jams from the lower-paced side of the street. Highlights for yours truly include the hazy, driftaway neo-psych of Niles Philips' 'Hidden In A Starfield', the simple reggae groove of Groove Monkz's 'Promised Land' and Zamali's Massive Attack-like 'Zamali' but with influences spanning Balearica, trip-hop, jazz fusion and more, there's plenty to enjoy here for those that are watching their BPMs...

Review: Timewarp Music's 'Freestyle 4 Funk' series reaches its ninth installment, which (somewhat confusingly) comes in four volumes, subtitled #funk, #disco, #tropicaldub and #downtempo. This is the #tropicaldub selection, for which you can essentially read 'reggae and dub' as label regulars like Prosper & Stabfinger, DJ Laurel, Vito Lalinga, Funky Destination and of course head honcho Timewarp Inc step up to pay tribute to the sound of JA - while still allowing, as with the #funk volume, plenty of scope for fusions with other styles, be they Latin (see DJ Laurel's 'Sambafunk'), Afro (see Lalinga's 'Vrye Denke') or hip-hop and breaks (see P&S's 'Popping The Clutch'), not to mention one fine slab of straight-up funk (Zamali's 'Kings & Queens') and, in the form of 'Simoon', the obligatory weirded-out closer...

Review: Volume 9 in the series, so regular buyers should have a pretty good idea what to expect by now! For the uninitiated, it's perhaps worth stressing the 'freestyle' part of the title: no mere slavish pastiches of 70s-style funk, the 16 tracks here expand that original blueprint to encompass influences from hip-hop, house, breaks, Afrobeat, reggae and jazz. Highlights for this reviewer include the stuttered jazz-hop of Djazz.OrgOnite's 'Yo Sco', Umbo's fast and furious 'Foolin' Around' and label boss Timewarp Inc's own 'Not Bad Disco' - ironically one the album's most trad-style offerings - but you'll find your own for sure.

The Other DJ - (3:37) 103 BPM
Review: German funk-breaks don Jayl Funk serves up two contrasting but complementary cuts on this latest outing for Greece's Timewarp Music. 'Take It Easy' itself is a classic-style funk jam with a distinctly jazzy twist to its lounge-y male scatted vox and bright piano chords - the kind of cut that summer poolside sessions were made for. 'The Other DJ', meanwhile, comes much more obviously from the funk-breaks school of thought, opening with a spoken vocal sample and heading down the cut 'n' paste route throughout, with some scratch sounds thrown in for good measure. Party-startin' stuff for sure.

My Belly Dream (Beats mix) - (6:59) 120 BPM
Review: The title here, which sounds like a reference to belly-dancing, is presumably meant to imply something Middle Eastern-sounding, but to these ears 'My Belly Dream' actually feels more Latin-influenced if anything - though, to be fair, the intricate hand percussion that forms its backbone does come topped with a warbling flute line so you can kinda see where they're coming from! Jazz-funkish guitars and trumpets also have their part to play, the end result being a lilting, percussive swayer whose natural home will be outdoor sets in the sunshine, with the accompanying Beats Mix doing exactly what it says on the tin.

Review: Jayl Funk has been turning out the party-starting funk grooves for well over a decade now and this latest pair, brought to you by Timewarp Music, won't disappoint fans of his previous work one iota. 'You Gotta Feel It' opens with a rave-y warping synth riff, then brings in pianos and female vocal wails before finally bursting out in all its funk-fuelled nu-disco glory. The pop-style vox might be a bit much for some but there's no doubting the bassline or the horns work... so it's just as well there's also an instrumental included, isn't it? 'Step Into It' features the same vocalist but is a little more laidback in feel.

Review: It's always a pleasure to see a new excursion from Timewarp Music, a longstanding signature of dubwise legacy, with this latest album offering from Vito Lalinga being another jewel in their many-studded crown. From start to finish, the album offers a beautiful combination of reggae, funk and soul elements, focussing on blissful percussion, groovy bass melodies and awesome vocal ad libs to give us a non-stop dreamy landscape. This is without a doubt a project that needs to be taken in across a long play setting, but picking out highlights would mean having to lift up the catchy horn riffs of 'Watch', a super-groovy percussive inflections of 'Iris' and of course 'Vrye Denke', a gorgeous title track dipped in smooth jazzy fusion. Awesome work!

Review: Four mixes to choose from of this latest outing by DJ Marcon & The Palo Santos, a six-piece Afrobeat project from Bulgaria headed up by producer and DJ Nikolay 'Marcon' Markov and guitarist Yanko Agirov. In its original form, 'A Journey South' stands out thanks to some very fine trumpet work, while on the remix front, label boss Timewarp Inc takes us on a more low-slung 'n' funky ride, Aris Kokou tones downs the horns a little and lets the percussion do more of the heavy lifting, while Umbo brings the guitars further to the fore - though it has to be said these are fairly subtle variations.

Review: Ever-prolific Croatian producer Vladimir Sivc AKA Funky Destination, a regular on the likes of Timewarp Music, Kraak Records and Cold Busted, returns with what (if we're counting correctly) is at least his eighth album in 10 years. His music's spanned a range of styles including funk, breaks and Balearica over the years, but 'Bless Da Planet' finds him firmly in reggae and dub mode - and pulling it all off with surprising aplomb. Sivc may be no Bob Marley, Lee Scratch or Toots Hibbert, but this album's every bit as convincing as those "regional heroes"-type reggae bands you tend to stumble across by accident on Sunday afternoons at festivals, and that's no mean feat. Worth investigating for sure.

Review: A satisfyingly varied four-tracker here from 20-year scene veteran and Timewarp regular Quincy Jointz. 'Breath In' pairs a looping, reggae-tinged backbeat with dreamy fem vox that wouldn't sound out of place on a fluffy Ibiza prog cut - no, it shouldn't really work, but it does. The meandering, percussive 'Desert' follows and is the standout to these ears thanks to its use of a hypnotic, Indian-sounding male vocal loop. Next up, 'Be With You' is a slower, mellower jam with a seriously heavy bottom end and some lightly applied funk squelch, before dubwise headnodder 'Echo Chamber' plays us out. Good stuff.

Review: Three mixes to choose from of this belter from Croatia's Vladimic Sivc - better known as Funky Destination, in which guise he's released seven albums in the past 10 years. In its Original form, 'The Soulway Players' has male gospel backing vox, diva shouts namechecking Memphis, New Orleans, Chicago and New York, and most importantly a sense of repressed energy - like the club's gonna go crazy any second now, which means it'll be a great set-builder. The Extended Mix gives the fuzz guitar more room to breathe while Louie's House Mix sticks a 4/4 kick underneath, but in pleasingly subtle fashion.

With just a handful of previous EPs and compilation appearances (not least on the forthcoming 'Paper Cuts Vol 6') to his name, he now comes to Greek label Timewarp Music with a pleasingly dreamy and hypnotic slice of midtempo disco/electronic pop. 'Fallen Soul' features an ethereal female "I sold the sold to my devil today" vocal that shares centre-stage with a mournful trumpet line, but is also available stripped of the former if vocals aren't your thing.

Review: Formed in 2019 by DJ/producer Nikolay Markov and guitarist Yanko Argirov, DJ Marcon & The Palo Santos are an Afrobeat-inspired six-piece from Bulgaria and this, their third EP for Greek label Timewarp Music, is the proverbial "game of two halves". The title track pretty much an out-and-out Afrobeat/Afro-jazz affair, its stop-start rhythm topped with a militant female vocal and some very fine brass, but if that's not your bag then fret not because the accompanying 'After Midnight', while still Afro-tinged, rocks a more straight-up jazz/jazz-funk groove - and once again, somebody needs to buy that trumpeter a drink!

Opening with the languid but hefty groove of 'I Don't Want You No More', the album operates largely at the more soulful end of the funk spectrum, veering occasionally into jazzier or more cinematic territory, with squalling Hammonds and sax much in evidence throughout. Vocals are by and large limited to looped samples but don't let that put you off - what you've got here are 49 minutes of real-deal shizzle that should scratch that funk itch for sure.

Review: You have to hand it to Angelos Stoumpos and his Timewarp empire: they've carved out a sound that's entirely their own, blending funk, soul, disco and house with reggae and dub tropes. The reggae influence here, though, is mostly limited to the rasta colours of the artwork: instead we're in straight-up funk and soul territory, with the pacy, floor-friendly 'Abyss' more than capable of holding its own alongside the likes of The Dap Kings, Speedometer or Lack Of Afro, while 'Foolin' Around' - the winner for yours truly - drops down into a deeper, dirtier funk groove, with some neat jazz flourishes around the edges.

Given that it IS the fifth volume - and given how prolific Mr Stoumpos is generally - you likely have a good idea what to expect already, and suffice to say you're probably on the right lines, with the collection starting out mostly in Balearic/downtempo/soulful territory while reggae, hiphop and dub flavas become more pronounced as the collection progresses. Review: Koka Mass Jazz may sound like a 17-strong jazz collective from Japan, but it's actually the nom du guerre of Bulgarian producer Konstantin Katsarski, whose CV includes releases on both Timewarp and Cold Busted. This latest long-player is sitting on our Broken Beat/Nu-Jazz page, but to be fair there's not that much "nu" about it and much of what's here could safely be filed under straight-up Jazz - which, by the way, is an indication of its quality, not a complaint! The format's interesting, too, featuring as it does an array of guest vocalists each of whose contributions is accompanied by a matching instrumental. 'Safe' is the standout for this reviewer, but there's much to love here.

Review: It's a very groovy time to be alive with Timewarp Music at the helm, unveiling here a very fun collection from Funky Destination, packed in with five fabulous original flavours. We open up with the intricate percussive pulses and blippy guitar melodies of 'Feeling Fly', which puts us right into the mood for a good time, with the organ-driven melodies and vibrant drum designs of 'Let The Spirit Heal' coming in directly after. From here, the vocals are pushed to the background for a hot second as 'So Damn Funky' unleashes a marvellous display of instrumental groove & texture, bouncing between slap bass manoeuvres and intricate guitar solos, before welcomes that warm vocal presence back with another hip-shaker of an arrangement. Finally, we enjoy a cosy outro in 'Flashback', which being bracketed with 'Louie's Kitchen' feels like the EP's after party, floating between loose yet tidy horn melodies and big room band drum lines to close out the EP in style.

The first hint you get of the album's overall vibe comes in the form of 'Low Key Factor', a midtempo slab of 'new old' funk-soul, after which 'Downtown Lagos' and 'Kings & Queens' pay tribute to the vibrant Afro-funk scene of the mid-late 70s before 'Chicago Soul' and 'Solar Quest' play us out on a more straight-up funk tip, the former having some rockier elements while the latter is pure Blaxpoitation-style squelch. 'Don't Bring Me Down' is a raw, sweaty modern funk workout, 'Music Gonna Move Your Soul' takes us into 'new old' soul pastures and comes with a self-explanatory Horns All The Way remix, while 'Alla Fine Del Mondo' and 'Afrodisia' add hints of Latin and Afro flava, respectively, before 'Albatros' plays us out on a more headnoddin' tip. Popping The Clutch (Timewarp Inc instrumental remix) - (4:16) 114 BPM
Review: Packing, essentially, two mixes that are each presented in vocal and instrumental forms, it's a case of "you pays your money and you makes your choice" with this one. In its original form, 'Popping The Clutch' is a funk-hop affair, with a rap courtesy of one Jonie D, that calls to mind the work of Bristolian scene faves The Allergies - or possibly, if you're a little older, all those early 90s 'Guru's Jazzmatazz' albums. Alternatively you can head for the remixes from Greek producer Angelos Stoumpos AKA Timewarp Inc, who gives the track a festival-friendly, reggae-fied makeover. Like we said, you pays your money...

Review: Third time around for this, the fourth long-player from Greek producer Angelos Stoumpos. 'Theory Of Revolution' first came out in late 2019, with an instrumental version released just a few weeks later; now here comes a bumper package of remixes. Some of these rubs, like RSN's take on 'Liberty Is Our Destiny' or the Jackz N Jointz rub of 'Realistic' have had previous single/EP releases, others are brand new, and with the 26 assembled mixes running the gamut from reggae, hip-hop and funk to house and disco, it'd be a VERY hard-to-please selector indeed who couldn't find something suitable for their floors here...

Review: Dj Marcon & The Palo Santos is a Bulgarian project formed in 2019 by producer/DJ Nikolay 'Marcon' Markov together with guitarist Yanko Argirov, influenced by west African, funk, jazz and soul roots - in the vein of legend Fela Kuti. 'Parara' is their debut release featuring three tracks: there is the infectious "Dime Amor" featuring vocals by Mahrez Hachemi that's an infectious heater with a latin twist, as well as the low slung disco of the title track and the slo-mo bliss of "1961" with its tropical soul vibe.

Review: Athens-based Angelos Stoumpos AKA Timewarp Inc is something of a musical chameleon, swapping back and forth between the worlds of reggae and funk/disco with ease. This latest offering on his own Timewarp Music label finds him firmly in the former camp, as he reworks a track from Virginyah feat Rsn's recent 'Therapy Sessions' EP - a soulful, trip-hoppish affair in its original form - inna reggae style and, indeed, fashion. Virginia Fragkoulatzi's vocal can be heard in full effect on the original mix, while the EP also packs Instrumental and Dubstramental remixes for when you're deep into the headnodding zone...

With a breakbeat and acid tip added to the Beatit Version, Timewarp Music got you covered: rain, hail, dub or shine!

Carousel - (4:52) 100 BPM
Review: Another full-length release here from Italy's ever-prolific Vito Lalinga, and it's something of the proverbial "game of two halves". Track titles like 'AfrEvolution', 'Nzuri' and 'Touba' give you a clue as to the distinctly Afro-flavoured feel that predominates on the first half of the album, but then we're thrown a curveball in the form of the Latin-oriented 'Carousel', which ushers in the second half, wherein Lalinga ploughs a more straight-up funk/jazz-funk furrow. As such it's an album that's well worth investigating whether you're a big fan of Afro styles or not, with 'Joy & Dance' - a sophisticated instrumental reminiscent of the likes of Dexter Wansel or Deodato - the pick to these ears.

Review: He's probably best known for his many contributions to the long-running 'Katakana Edits' re-edit series, but DJ Laurel - Minsk native Lavr Berzhanin - does actually MAKE original music as well! Here, he teams up with Bruges-based vocalist Oleg Jagger on a sun-drenched (and fairly self-explanatory) slab of Latin-infused funk. Mix-wise, you can choose between the summery Original which puts fluttering Spanish guitar front and centre, an earthier, more stripped-back remix from Prosper & Le Marabout which foregrounds the chanted vocal, or Vito Lalinga's rerub, which is similar to the Original but with a slightly jazzier feel.

Review: Belgian producer Zamali made his name with a string of re-edit EPs on Timewarp in the late 00s and early 2010s. These days he's focusing more on original productions, and now he returns to the Greek label with his debut full-length. Contemporary funk is his stock-in-trade, sometimes - as on 'Jack The Ripper' - veering towards the funk-breaks/funk-hop side of the street, other times leaning more towards "new old" homage vibes, but never shy of dropping in a familiar vocal sample here and there, or injecting a hint of disco, Afro or even house flava. Standouts for this reviewer include the Zapp/Cameo-esque 'Fatty Bump' and the jaunty, jazzy 'Gimme Some Faith'.

Review: Hailing from Harderwijk in the Netherlands, Niles Philips specialises in "breakbeat music with funky elements", and this four-tracker could just as easily sit in our Downtempo or Balearic sections. You won't find many off-kilter rhythms or wonky time-signatures here - just some very fine hazy, stoned grooves reminiscent of the likes of Lemon Jelly or Bent, and lots of extended spoken vocal samples on the subject of UFOs, technology and, aptly enough right now, viruses. 'Antibody' also provides the EP's jazziest moment, featuring as it does some neat blues-y organ work - think Jimmy Smith in a particularly glum mood.

Review: Croatian based producer Vladimir Sivc's Funky Destination project returns with his seventh solo studio LP, I Do Voodoo. At 17-tracks-large, Funky Destination mixes up all manner of grooves and funk through vintage drums, breaks and broken beat to hip hop, soul and boogie. Paying homage to '70s inspired sounds, there's reggae to be found in "Dubby Brother From Jamaica" and "Like A Lion" to displays of gospel in "Mo's Town", swinging disco in "It's In The Music" and percussive lounge-time jazz sessions in "Tired Of This Game". With the sound of guitars colliding with more Brazlian and tropical styles in "The Wicked One" and "Put Your Feet Down", there's still no going past this album's undeniable lead cut "I Do Voodoo".

Review: Jack & Jointz are a German duo who describe their music as "a mixture of funk, reggae, house and pop with a groovy and electronic note", and here they rework 'Realistic' from Greece's Angelos Stoumpos, better known as Timewarp Inc. With the song having been released five times already (single, album, instrumental, label compilation, Jazznut remix), Timewarp Inc fans must be starting to wonder when they're going to hear some new material, but if you've yet to pick up any of the previous versions and are a fan of crossover soul acts like Cee-Lo, Aloe Blacc or Gregory Porter, it's still worth checking.

Review: Timewarp Music welcomes aboard a new artist to their roster in Jazznut aka Dmitry Khlynin. Based out of Russia, the name suits him, as if he's some kind of mad professor stewing over a mixed pot of jazz and funk, some rock and trip hop alongside some big beats business, breaks and a healthy dose modern electronics. Across 11 peak time tracks there's stoner grooves and psychedelica in "Keep Moving", a New Yorkan diva session in "Sun Goes Down (feat Kali Malia)" to space cowboy cosmic disco in "Sinful Gold". A cinematic soundtrack for a pulp fiction fanatic.

The so far little known artist gives the original a '90s pop-house makeover inspiring memories of a time when Madonna's "Ray Of Light" or Fatboy Slim's "Weapon Of Choice" were dominating the charts. Including licks of live bass from Greek-born Grammy winner Panagiotis Andreou across this mini-LP, Therapy Sessions goes most electronic and new age (Morcheeba-style) on numbers like "Why" and "Getaway" - whereas your clearly defined pop numbers come out of tracks like "What Do You Want" and the funky "Out Of Control".
