Review: It's been a while since Boris Bunnik donned his Hexagon pseudonym - normally he can be found crafting Detroit-inspired electro as Versalife. That said, Information Paradox makes it clear that Bunnik is just as comfortable making slow tempo tracks as he is reinventing Motor City blueprints. Both "Unruh Radiation" and "Cauchy Horizons" are wonderfully moody pieces of head-nodding electro - with ominous basslines at their centre - while he strays into more abstract territory on the menacing "Thermodynamics". However, where Information Paradox really impresses is on the mood pieces. "Oscillate" and "Geodesics" are ethereal ambient compositions, while "Schwarzschild Radius" and "Space Tunnelling Through The Barrier" are the kind of deep space soundtracks that will appeal to Dopplereffekt fans.

Review: Terschelling techno straight from the mind of Conforce, aka Versalife (real name Boris Bunnik) on the Dutch producer's own Transcendent label. This Present Shock EP follows the most recent Versalife album on 2020 Vision and it sees the electro purist in fine form once again with a cooly-tipped four-track EP of subtle Detroit-centric tones, cosmic atmospheres and sweet melodies. Get your heavier hitting tracks from both "Reality Distortion Field" and "Transient Vesicle Fusion", with deeper grooves and cooler textures to be found in "Shadow Warrior" and space echo specialty "Anxiety".

Review: Dutchman Boris Bunnik is no newcomer to the tech world, and is very much considered a certified veteran around these parts. In fact, his Conforce alias is still one of our top choices when it comes to house and techno hybrids, and the same goes for Versalife and the electro spectrum. He's back via the latter this week, returning with the third helping of Soul Of The Automaton through his own Transcendent imprint and, oh boy, does this guy know how to smash out electro. Unlike many newbies about the place right now, tracks like "Utopia In Distress" and "Lapis Lazuli" are utter quality throughout, and the same goes for the flipside, where Bunnik churns out nothing but deep, ethereal vibes on both "Missing Link" and "Portamento Quints" in what wraps up as a stellar EP from the reliable artist.

Hidden Territories EP

Pitchblack - (5:52) 83 BPM
Continuum - (6:39) 83 BPM
Systematic Repetition - (6:34) 120 BPM
Review: Hexagon is one of Boris Bunnik's many aliases, and he reserves it for his ambient and experimental releases. It is also one of his least prolific projects, and Territories is the first Hexagon since 2013. It's been worth the wait though; the title track kick starts the release with a moody, frazzled bass and clipped beats, before "Pitchblack" brings the listener into a more typical Hexagon sound, where cavernous sound scapes hang heavy in the air like storm clouds. "Continuum" is in a similar vein, albeit underpinned by tweaked acid, but best of all is "Systematic Repetition". Like an update of Speedy J's classic "De: Orbit", it microscopic bleeps and gentle melodies bring the listener back to stark beauty of 'intelligent techno'.

Review: Given the sheer pace at which Boris Bunnik puts out material across his cavalcade of aliases, there is no small irony in the relaxed manner in which Transcendent, the label he runs with Julius de Wal, operates. Launched back in late 2012 with some material from Bunnik, naturally, under his Hexagon alias, there have been only two subsequent releases on Transcendent. A new year brings the count to five, with the Travelogue EP brandishing four fresh Conforce off cuts from Bunnik's Rotterdam studio. From the off, Transcendent has focussed on deeper, more abstract sonic terrain and it's no different here with cuts such as "Phase 7" little more than analogue pulses transmitted into the ether and met with all manner of delay and phasing. Nobody does it better than Bunnik!
