Tresor

Berlin-based techno label Tresor landed in 1991. The label was born out of one the city’s most-respected underground techno clubs, following the fall of the Berlin Wall. Founded by Dimitri Hegemann, Tresor has been ‘forever re-defining techno as it contorts and manoeuvres around contemporary pressure and technological flux’. From deep, entrancing journeys, to rough, militant stompers, Tresor has released forward-thinking productions from the likes of: Cristian Vogel, Surgeon, Drexciya, Pacou, Mike Huckaby, Marcelus, James Ruskin, Joey Beltram, Robert Hood, Sleeparchive and more.

Review: On her latest release, Kerrie unpicks one of the defining topics of this age - the relationship between humanity and machines. The title track represents a dystopian take on this issue, with waves of droning noise fused with a robotic, stepping rhythm. "Symbiosis" is similarly inclined. Focused on the dance floor, it sees Kerrie deliver a raw, pulsating groove shot through with repetitive, growling riffs. "Technopoly Dream" goes down a different route, as Kerrie drops a stripped back rhythm track peppered with hypnotic vocal loops. "Ode to the D" marks another shift in style - as its title suggests, it's a futuristic paean to the city where techno started.

Review: UFO95 is the latest producer to land on Tresor - and Backward Improvement packs a powerful punch. "Fragment" is a robust, ebm-themed workout. Led by a pounding bass, it shoots shards of spiky percussion through the speakers. On "Gargk", he changes tact, dropping a frenetic break beat track led by atmospheric synths and warbling synths. "Solar" marks another shift in sound - over a punishing groove, UFO95 rains down coruscating riffs. "Cogitor" is also a bruising piece, but with a different approach as steely drums prevail. Meanwhile, "Sexual Tension" sees intense tones and a vocal sample unfold over a relentless groove - the kind of track that will have the desired impact on Tresor's main floor.

Review: December follows the first Transform release from earlier this year with this fine EP. Veering towards electro and industrial influences, the second instalment starts with the title track's angular rhythm and brooding bass. A similar mood prevails on "No Photographs, Only Memories", where December factors poignant vocals into robust, menacing breaks. On "Wasteland 1" and "Wasteland 2", he departs from this style to deliver droning, neo-classical dirges. That focus changes again with the pared back techno of "Modern Phobias". And on "Unspoken Worlds Of Hope", December drops a near flawless fusion of industrial force and electro funk, as a marauding bass and rolling metal drums provide the backdrop for irresistibly dystopian synths.

Review: Waajeed's 2022 album, Memoirs Of Hi-Tech Jazz, was a paean to Detroit's musical heritage from techno to hip-hop and beyond. It comes as no surprise that this remix package is just as sonically diverse. The Yazzus version of "The Ballad of Robert O'Bryant" fuses frenetic jazz drums and percussion with a driving rhythm and an acid-fuelled tones. In stark contrast, the Jensen Interceptor x Assembler Code take on "Memoirs of Hi-Tech Jazz" is a stark electro workout, with a ferocious steely rhythm and murderous bass prevailing. Mark Broom's remix of "Right Now" is a more conventional techno track. Centred on a rolling tribal groove, it features dramatic stabs and a robust bassline.

Maintain The Golden Ratio
Maintain - (4:56) 128 BPM
The Golden Ratio (version) - (4:42) 135 BPM Hot
Review: After a long hiatus, Juan Atkins resurrects his seminal Cybotron project. Thankfully, not much has changed since it first appeared in the early 80s. On "Maintain", similar, distinctive sounds prevail. Sleek synth lines and ponderous vocals are set to Cybotron's steely drums and brooding bass - a combination that still sounds as futuristic now as it did when Atkins and his then partner Rik Davis re-wired electronic music. "The Golden Ratio" does mark a shift of sorts, and sees Atkins go deeper. Shot through with subtle acidic pulses and dreamy melodies, it's close to the ERP school of electro, albeit powered by Cybotron's distinctive 808s. As comebacks go, it's one that really lives up to expectations.

Review: Amnes and Lula share a penchant for hard-edged techno, but Synergy is the first time that they have appeared together on a release. Amnes' "Our Bodies" is a dense roller. Led by grainy kicks and firing percussion, evocative synth textures envelop the arrangement. "Timeshift" sees Lula opt for a different approach. The pace is slower, but she uses robust break beats as the backdrop for atmospheric sound scapes. Lula's other contribution, "Together", picks up the pace. On this occasion, she deploys a pounding, ebm-style bass and a steely rhythm to devastating effect - even if the dreamy sounds are never too far away.

Review: Transparent Sound, established in Bognor in 1994, is among the UK's most enduring electro acts. This dynamic collaboration between Orson Bramley and Martin Brown has solidified Transparent Sound's reputation as one of the most influential electro duo with a discography boasting a collection of highly acclaimed releases that have garnered significant recognition within the electronic music scene. This retrospective album "Accidents 1994-2023" compiles a fortunate selection of 13 awe-inspiring electrical mishaps. This comprehensive collection features dancefloor anthems like "Punk Mother Fucker," which once graced the sets of Villalobos, and "No Call From New York," as heard on Helena Hauff's exceptional 2017 Essential Mix. Additionally, the album includes the unreleased white label track "Windows To Your Sole" from Transparent Sound 007, exclusive unreleased tracks, special 2023 edits, and a digital bonus of six additional tracks.

Review: Robert Hood, the renowned techno producer, is set to reissue one of his most influential albums to mark its 30th anniversary. Originally released in 1993 under his alias, The Vision, "Waveform Transmission Vol. 2" encapsulates the raw techno sound that has come to define Hood's music. The album was created just as Hood was leaving his hometown of Detroit and moving to New York with Jeff Mills, his cofounder of the Underground Resistance label. Tresor, the German record label, has delved deep into its archives to bring a fresh release of this classic album to fans. With funky techno drum foundations and mind-bending details, "Waveform Transmission Vol. 2" set the bar high and has aged incredibly well. All hail Robert Hood!

Review: This compilation was released as part of the overall "Kotti Island" artistic project - whose origins lie in artists exploring the Kotbusser Tor in Berlin. The area's communist-era architecture is captured well on the brooding ambient soundscapes of Zettka's "cS?n?r D??" and project lead Cecilia Tosh's grainy techno stomper, "Blend". On "Walking In Circles", Jon Hester reimagines this part of the German capital in a different way, with the hum and whoosh of the S-Bahn and busy streets set to a drum-heavy, hypnotic club track. Meanwhile, on "Berlin Speed Drive", Vril drops a throbbing, ominous bass; combined with firing hi hats and a driving rhythm, it brilliantly sums up the ups and downs of life on Kotti Island.

Review: Celebrating its 350th release, Tresor delivers a compilation with a difference. Instead of the steely techno that has defined the club and label, Yet is all about left of centre sounds. There's the ethnic chants of Nandele & A-Tweed's "Deserto", while on "Lovesong" Nadia Struiwigh combines woozy sub-bass with mid-tempo drums. Ryan James Ford's "Totes (Bath mix)" does steer the compilation back towards the dance floor, but it's with a twist, as clattering break beats provide the backdrop for introspective synths. It's only a temporary divergence though - "No Longer Human" is a moody stepper, while DJ Sotofett and Kavadi's "Kandhan Karunai" sees the pair drop a frenetic, fragmented rhythm that defies categorisation.

Review: LNS and DJ Sotofett last appeared on Tresor in 2021 with their debut album, Sputters. Now they're back with a fine two-track EP that takes in a range of distinctive flavours. "Reform" is a deep electro groove, with the pair adding in glitchy tones and solemn piano chimes. It makes for an atmospheric, distinctive take on a well-known sound. "Plexistorm" inhabits a similar territory. On this occasion, it's all about the bass, with a plaintive-sounding low end providing the focus for dreamy strings, bleepy tones and spiky percussion. It's testament to the pair's talent that they can tease new possibilities from the electro canon.

Review: Crash Recoil is Anthony Childs' first artist album as Surgeon in half a decade. During that time, some techno producers have embraced 'business' while others now limit their productivity to Instagram. Not so Childs. While grounded in the dense sound that is unmistakably Surgeon, its author says the album draws on disparate influences. The UK producer's love of industrial and noise surfaces on the grimy underbelly of "Metal Pig" and "Second Magnitude Stars", while a more visceral iteration is audible on the frazzled menace of "We Laugh And Clap At The Circus". In contrast, the angular framework he designs on "Leadership Contest" is every bit as hypnotic as vintage Robert Hood. Remaining in this field, "Subcultures" sees him conjure up a textured, haunting groove - it's Surgeon at his most atmospheric, but still powered by a tough electronic rhythm.

Review: DJ Shufflemaster (real name Tatsuya Kanamori) first saw fame with Tresor's release of the 'EXP' album all the way back in 2001, at a time when the Berlin clubbing institution was already aiming to shine a light on techno scenes beyond its own walls. Vastly ahead of its time, the tracks on the album (now once more called to our attention via this reissue) are what we'd have considered ourselves more liable to encounter in the UK in the mid-2010s; tracks like 'Onto The Body' have a broken beat feel to them, and many tracks verge quite readily off the edge of 4x4 kick drum orthodoxy. A compressed and washy techno album drawing on every influence from dub to Brummy sound. This expanded reissue combines the original release tracks with three tracks from the Angel Gate 12" from the same year.

Review: Fittingly, the first single to be released from Waajeed's recent (and frankly brilliant) 'Memoirs of Hi-Tech Jazz' album is 'Motor City Madness', a sax-sporting marriage of Detroit jazz, techno and deep house sounds. The EP opens with an extended 12" take on the album version, before a swathe of remixers take over. The headline-grabbing rework comes from Motor City techno mainstays Underground Resistance, who re-imagine the track as a driving, sax-sporting slab of bass-heavy, house-tempo techno futurism smothered in sci-fi strings. Elsewhere, Zo!, Tall Black Guy, Michelle Manzo and De'Sean Jones join forces as People Mover to drop a decidedly intergalactic-sounding, breakbeat-driven hi-tech jazz take, while the SHE Spells Doom remix is a breathless, Afro-house-tinged broken beat take that's as tough and infectious as they come.

Review: Few artists have mapped out new possibilities for modern electronic music like Neil Landstrumm. Originally released in 1996, Understanding Disinformation is still testament to its author's ability to push techno to the outer limits. "Twisted In New York" and "Praline Horse" are Landstrumm's unique interpretation of Chicago techno, as nickel plated drums are soldered to grinding, groaning sub-bass. Meanwhile, the barrelling "The Glasvegas Experience" is a more club friendly take on the noisy sound he pioneered on Brown By August. In contrast, "Invasion Of The Bovine Snatchers" sees the seminal Scottish producer push in an abstract direction. The track's sub-bass and atonal howls pave the way for a direction explored most comprehensively on 2007's Restaurant Of Assassins. As a blueprint for re-imaging electronic music, Understanding Disinformation is still peerless.

Review: On his first album since 2018, Waajeed unveils his interpretation of one of the Motor City's most distinctive sub-genres, hi-tech jazz. It's a conceptual piece of sorts, with the album not only designed to be listening to while cruising around in your car, but also timed to last the exact length of a journey between two notable Motor City landmarks. After getting things going with a chunk of killer ambient jazz (resplendent with poetic spoken word vocals from Black Nix), Waajeed cannily combines vivid, sci-fi electronics and cracking deep house beats with live jazz instrumentation and - on a couple of occasions - stunning string arrangements. Our picks of a very strong bunch include the glossy, broken jazz-funk lusciousness of 'The Ballad of Robert O'Bryant', the deep jazz-house excellence of 'The Dub' and the neo-classical swell of 'Rouge'

Known in US techno circles through his close association with Model 500, this is the first time that a wider techno audience has heard of him. "Hoffman's S.O.S." makes quite the first impression. It's only a fat, squelchy electronic bassline that really separates the trumpet-driven 12" Version and accompanying Edit from what you might call "jazz proper", leaving the UR crew with the job of adding more overtly floor-friendly 4/4 beats and bringing the sax further to the fore - but this is sheer class whichever mix you plump for.

The title track is a filter-heavy summery affair, while "Scirocco" sees them go deeper to deliver a lush US house groove. On "Be Wild", they up the ante with a driving, loop-heavy techno track, whole "Baia" is a dense, frenetic affair, led by clicking, frenetic percussion and surging chords. Remaining in this field, "United" revisits the kind of ethnic chants and insistent vocal samples that prevailed on Andrew McLaughlin's classic, "Love Story", while "Dense Blue" is a breathy ambient piece.

Review: Oscean is a new collaboration between Andr?s Zacco and Seph, with its first release landing on the legendary Tresor. Ideoma starts off with the deep tones and brittle break beats of "Spiral", before the pair ramp up the energy with "Feral". Leaner and more stripped back, it resounds to an angular rhythm, deft spin-backs and niggling percussion. "Spacion" is more introspective and sees the pair draw on the mournful work of B12 and Aphex Twin, incorporating melancholic reveries into a niggling groove. Changing tact again, "Austraal" has a strong dance floor focus. Once again, the arrangement is complex, but on this occasion, the focus is on a lean, linear rhythm, powered by a clanging, metallic bass.

Underpinned by the storied producer's ability to tease hypnotic shapes from his machines, this EP is a mesmerising experience from start to finish. "Messy Kafka World" revolves around organic drums and percussion, with Dozzy conjuring up hypnotic synth lines in the background. Changing tact, "Synthi Chase" sees him piecing together layer upon layer of droning tones, while on "Wooden Dolls Don't Cry", he draws up a dense percussive framework as a backdrop for his subtle tones. Review: Hot on the heels of the recent 30-year anniversary compilation, Tresor has another landmark release scheduled - a reissue of the seminal Againstnature album. Originally released back in 2000, this collaboration between Karl O'Connor and Peter Sutton laid the foundations for the distinctive 'Birmingham sound' - and you can hear the evolution of this style on the dense, looped rhythm of "Let Them Bleed", the coruscating, frazzled builds of "Guiltless" and "Hanoi Hanoi", which resounds to steely, chain mail percussion. Apart from these visceral tracks, Againstnature also sees O'Connor and Sutton deliver the neo-classical sound scapes of "Paralyzing" and "Under Skin", tracks that sound as powerful and moving as their unmistakable industrial techno.

Review: As befits one of techno's most revered labels, Tresor 30 is a comprehensive collection that takes in a breath-taking array of artists and sounds. The compilation features classics, such as Underground Resistance's "Final Frontier", remixed here into a clubbier shape, the spellbinding deep techno of Juan Atkins' "I Love You" and Jeff Mills' timeless banger, "Late Night", one of Tresor's signature tracks. These eternal works sit alongside contributions from newer artists: in particular, Afrodeutsche's "Can't Stop" is a wonderfully dreamy affair, while RRoxymore's "Multiplicity" teases new twists from percussive techno. Thirty years after its inception, Tresor is showing no signs of slowing down.

Review: Originally released back in the early 1990s, this reissue shows that 3MB has not aged a day. The work of Thomas Fehlmann, Mortiz Van Oswald and the peerless Juan Atkins, each track still teems with shiny futurism. On "The 4th Quarter", this sensibility takes the form of crashing snares and wild tonal shifts, while in contrast, "Bassmental" sees the trio hitch a ride through the cosmos as subsonic blips and bleeps whoosh past. 3MB also delivers the unexpected: "Die Kosmischen Kuriere" starts with a jacking groove before dropping into one of techno's most distinctive basslines, and then there's "Jazz Is The Teacher", a hyper-speed rhythm that jitters and shakes just enough to provide a glimpse into a parallel universe.

Review: Dave 'Function' Sumner was last seen on Tresor in 2019 with the chilling Existenz album. This return to the storied label could not get off to a more different start, with Sumner dropping the pounding techno of "Misinterpretations Of Reality". He moves closer to the prevailing style of Existenz with the esoteric synths and lithe stepping rhythm of "An Optical Illusion Of Consciousness", while on "Spiritually Unconscious (Dissolve)", the Sandwell District founder changes tact again, delivering a snaking, wiry groove, teeming with melodies that are redolent of vintage Speedy J. Closing out this fine release from one of techno's most respected artists is the malevolent bass and tribal drums of
"Compulsive Thinking: Repetitive and Pointless".

Review: DJ Deep returns to Tresor with his first material for the label in five years. "Swamps" starts the release in relaxed mode, with birds chirping over a drawn-out drum track and gurgling bass, while on "Utrecht", he pushes further away from the dance floor with eerie sound scapes and warbling tones. In stark contrast both "Tommy" and "Escape" are fast-paced, tough dance floor tracks that are based on heavy bass drums and punctuated by dramatic synth builds. In between these two differing approaches there's "Demonstration"; with its pitch-bent vocal samples, analogue riffs and robust kicks, it sounds like Deep's take on 90s techno minimalism.

Review: Terrence Dixon's From the Far Future odyssey began 20 years ago when the first album in the series appeared on Tresor. The second, at times more danceable instalment, followed only in 2012, with another eight-year gap until this latest volume. Like its predecessors, this third long player is a hugely impressive affair and will leave the listener in no doubt that Dixon is a master of the techno form. From the brooding ambience of "Lost Communication Procedure" and "Lost In Space" to the gloomy pointillist abstractions of "We Can Rebuild Him" and "Remarkable Warrior" into the more full blooded club techno on the tough "Spectrum of Light" and the atmospheric, ghostly "Program Weight", "Part 3" once again reveals a true visionary at work.

This first instalment sees Ash Luk and Lida P draw on a myriad of influences: in its original version "Ravebomb" features epic, trance hooks, followed by the high-speed break beats and searing bass of the 'Fire' version. On "Perfect Rendition", the duo slow down the pace to deliver the kind of cut-up breaks meets old school sampling collage that could easily pass for vintage Meat Beat Manifesto, while this first volume concludes with "The Next Screen Is Death", where the duo deliver more breaks, but this time playing out with epic strings.

Review: Roger Semsroth aka Sleeparchive is one of the world's most singular techno artists, focused on creating looped, repetitive tracks that take influence from archetypal minimalists like the Sahko label. On Trust, his latest long player, Semsroth opts for a more visceral approach. The grated drums of "Needle" comes across like Rob Hood at his most intense, while on peak time rollers such as "Concrete" and "Dust", the Berlin producer reveals shades of Jeff Mills during his looped Purposemaker period. "Leave" sees Sleeparchive venture into deeper territories as snappy drums support a melodic progression, but it's only a temporary divergence and on "Fence", he's back to the raw, looped techno that defines most of Trust.

Review: Existenz is Dave Sumner's third artist album as Function, and it partly ushers in a change in style. While there are echoes of his typical brooding, hypnotic techno on the mysterious, acid-tinged "Nylon Mood" and the heads-down roller, "Golden Dawn" - which features Stefanie Parnow - much of the album comprises a more mellow mood. There's the wonderfully hypnotic 90s ambient of "The Approach" and "Sagittarius A (Right Ascension)", while Function hooks up with vocalist Robert Owens to do deep house on the layered, textured "Growth Cycle". It's without doubt Function's most diverse long player, and ranges from the rickety electro of "Pleasure Discipline" to the dub shanty of "Interdimensional Interference".

The Siklikal EP demonstrates four careful executions in pure form techno by a true veteran who knows what works on the dancefloor. Over his 20 year career, he's released on esteemed imprints such as 7th City, Matrix, Pittsburgh Tracks and Applied Rhythmic Technology (ART) so he's definitely earned his spot here on the Berlin-based label. A stark homage to the recent history of American electronic music, Rudiman pays his respect in a poignant manner. From the moody tension and suspense of "Too Far Gone" calling to mind Landcruising era Carl Craig, bridging the gap between Chicago acid and Florida electro on "Too Far Gone" or the majestic hi-tech soul of first wave Motor City on "Backwards Tomarrows" through to the evocative IDM interludes such as "KNSR" or "Past The Edge" which call to mind the work of Detroit innovators such as John Beltran or Neil Ollivierra - Rudiman proudly wears his influences on his sleeve yet impressively reinterprets them as his own on this fine release.

Review: Tresor is the latest label to fall under Rod Modell's spell with the release of the ninth artist album. While Modell's work as Deepchord largely focused on cavernous dub techno, material under his own name falls firmly into uptempo club mode. Echoes of Deepchord abound on the droning "Triangulation", but the rickety, percussive rhythm of "Reiki" and the high-paced "ITO" and broken beat "Riga" deliver dance floor impact while also weaving textured sounds into each arrangement. "Tracer" marks a new departure for Modell however, as he turns his hand towards the kind of tough, linear track that you'd expect to hear from Luke Slater.

Review: Thirty years after its original release, Tresor puts out a re-mastered version of Moondance. The work of German producer Udo Heitfeld, it draws on mysticism and the human sub-conscious as much as it does on various electronic music sources and references to create a mesmerising work. Tracks like "Strange World" sound like a lounge take on Yello, while on "Rendezvous In Space" and "Mood Dance: The Original", TV Victor moves into the dubbed out space that the Orb inhabited around the early 90s. Meanwhile "They Are Coming" is a brilliantly moody, slowed down techno workout and "Lunatic Creature" is melancholic downtempo affair that pre-dates Mo'Wax. Nearly three decades later, Moondance remains a stellar, atmospheric affair.

Revised Recordings begins with the deep sonar transmission of "Frost" with its Millisian melodies and majestic string arrangements that would make even the Wizard himself take notice. Not to mention the digital exclusive "Trust" which is equal parts mesmerising yet aggressive - this is followed by the fittingly titled "Wood" which is dry as bark: a textured and guttural DJ tool in typically greyscale fashion.

Those sets at Tresor have clearly paid dividends, and both "Structure" and "Involvement" are low-slung tribal rollers, powered by electronic bass and searing percussion. "H-1 A.p." provides some respite thanks to Anderson's use of frazzled ambience, but it's only a temporary break; straight afterwards, the title track sees her dive back onto the dance floor with a dense, filtered workout before "Momentum" further solidifies her reputation as a creative artist thanks to its low-tempo, ebm prowling groove.

Review: It's hard to believe that Internal Empire is a quarter of a century old. To mark this anniversary - and presumably to bring it to a new generation - Tresor has decided to re-release it. Combining an ability to distill electronic music down to its barest, most hypnotic form, Hood delivers wiry, receptive grooves like "Master Builder" and "Parade", the latter sounding similar to being trapped inside an assembly plant as the machines career out of control. Despite this mechanical precision, Internal Empire is also a masterclass in electronic funk. The glassy percussive bursts on "Within" and the layer-upon-layer tones of "Minus" show that when it comes to futuristic techno few works, past or present, can match it.

However it is his full length opus from 1998 named Skynet which is the most storied release of all. From the hypnotic title track and its energetic polyrhythms that reach near tribal moments, his trademark soulful techno sound as heard on walking on water, equally idiosyncratic sounds as heard on the minimal electro of "Electric Circus" and unadulterated hi-tech soul on "Subterrania" this is one right classic

Review: Marcelus has enjoyed a long and productive relationship with techno institution Tresor over the past six years, issuing a series of EPs and his debut album on the label. For his first release of 2018, the French artist makes a sideways shift. The title track is an organic-sounding affair, revolving around loose drums and intricate percussive twists and turns. Most notably, it eschews a direct dance floor approach. On "Parenthesis", the French producer goes deeper, with layered textures unfolding over a languid groove, while on "Descent" a watery, minimal sound prevails. It's not all subtle sounds however, and "Say It Again" is an uptempo, rattling workout, which is sure to keep Tresor's core constituents very happy.

Review: London based Manni Dee returns after some full-on explorations in extremity, for the likes of Perc Trax, Layla and Emetic with this brand new killer for the esteemed Tresor. The production of The Residue EP was inspired by his home city, the British capital and its general living conditions. Topics such as social cleansing, inequality and the general political situation and how this in turn 'informs internal and external locus of control'. From the abrasive factory floor assault of "Subterranean Choke", the repulsive dark ambient of "At The Mercy Of The Muse" and its uneasy narrative, or the blistering title track with its pounding industrial rhythms and textural noise - all reaching straight for the jugular!

Review: One would immediately not pair Thomas Fehlman, the renowned German experimentalist, with techno minimalist Terrence Dixon, but this album still makes perfect artistic sense. Although the pair had never met before they recorded it around the time of last year's Detroit's Movement festival, their sensibilities overlap seamlessly from the outset. Fehlmann's playful abstract nuances and Dixon's pointillist sense of repetition make tracks like "The Corner" and "Patterns & Senses" danceable but also deeply experimental. While Dixon's hypnotic approach takes over on the driving "Strings In Space", in the main, this is an work of creative equals, as the steppy "Experiment 3" and the deep space ambience of "Landline" demonstrate.

Review: Here's a somewhat unusual release for Tresor: Second Woman is a collaboration between Turk Dietrich and Joshua Eustis of Telefon Tel Aviv, and on "Instant 1", the pair showcase an abstract, IDM side to their sound, with massive sub bass unravelling over a rickety, stuttering arrangement. "Instant 2" is much more straightforward, comprising a hypnotic dub techno workout that's similar in sound to Tresor signings like Savvas Ysatis. However, the pair quickly revert to a more abstract approach on "Apart 1", where a sliver of mangled percussion is woven through the spacey groove, while the second version of "Apart" is an atmospheric, beat less piece. Props to Tresor for putting out this record.

Juan Atkins & Moritz Von Oswald Present Borderland: Angles

Concave 2 - (9:37) 128 BPM
Review: Detroit godfather Juan Atkins and Berlin techno legend Moritz Von Oswald return as Borderland, one of several collaborations since 1992 and following up their 2016 album for Tresor: the Transport album which again consolidated both respective artist's solid studio experience, honed over the last 30 years. The funky, slightly bumpin' and absolutely addictive hi-tech soul of "Concave 1" will have you grooving away on a late night dancefloor in Berlin or beyond with its evocative and life affirming vibes. "Concave 2" further explores their studio refined sequences on this heady and hypnotic journey full of woozy arpeggios, steely rhythms and dubby bass frequencies.

Review: When they first made their mark in the late 1990s, Berlin duo Porter Ricks was renowned for making Basic Channel style dub techno. Following their reunification and return to action last year, the veteran production duo has largely delivered material that's more forthright, creepy and dystopian in tone, if still accompanied by the kind of mind-altering sound design that's long marked out dub techno productions. Anguilla Electrica, their first album since 1999, continues this trend, ambling between glitch-laden, industrial-themed dub techno workouts, apocalyptic club techno, hypnotic, drone-influenced dancefloor positivity, and more experimental moments that defy neat categorization. The results are wholeheartedly impressive, making Anguilla Electrica one of the best comeback albums of recent times.

Review: Dreamy Harbour celebrates 25 years of Berlin institution Tresor with several new and unreleased cuts by staples of the club and its seminal in house label alike. Featuring work of artists from the US, Germany, China, France, Austria, Italy and the UK, it is worth dwelling on how the cultural conditions that birthed Detroit techno (ie economic neglect and broken industry) were mirrored by the disused bunkers and impromptu parties of post-unification East Berlin. Techno a found new, vigorous expression. "Without Tresor, Berlin would not be what it is today," concludes founder Dimitri Hegemann. "Even though it sounds a bit pretentious, it is true. Tresor was the prototype for an extraordinary club. It was only possible as a combination of the right time, the right place, the right content and determined people." Excerpt of liner notes, by Rob Sharp - November 2016.

Review: It's been another explosive year for Buffalo veteran Parker with key releases firing from Repitch, Spazio, Inkblots and Edit Select this year already. Now, after over 20 years in the game, he makes his debut on the mighty Tresor with four more highly mixable and creative reasons why he's maintained his respected status; "Disintegrating Sand" rolls and folds the kicks and rhythmic vapour traces with a Plastik edge while "Angels In Cages" fluctuates with a mind-warping trippiness, "Gyroscopic Precession" twists the lasers with a visceral physicality and "Meteor Crater" warps with hypnotic insistency. Lean elements, mean messages - Parker makes music you can help but get lost inside of.

Review: Tresor really are a special label. Almost thirty years in the business, and still dominating like no other imprint on the techno scene. This is because they have the power to bring in the very best of artists, with this latest re-appearance from Porter Ricks being one of the many examples of their timeless qualities. The Berlin duo made their name thanks to a succession of incredible releases for Chain Reaction, a Basic Channel sub-label that brought the experimental dub frame to the techno sphere; the project has always been a favourite of ours, and it's so pleasing to hear them doing what they do best. "Shadow Boat" is classic Porter Ricks, a glitchy, intricate dub-techno monster whose 4/4 beat is hidden among the myriad of sonics and harmonics bundled into a tight roll, and the same goes for "Bay Rouge" and its slower, more placid cascade of heartical melodies. "Harbour Chart" is the final call, a downtempo beauty that makes all other ambient seem sterile and lifeless. This is so highly recommended...

Review: France's reputation for underground techno is on the rise and this new album from Marcelus won't do it any harm. The Parisian producer has already a string of acclaimed releases on Tresor and Deeply Rooted House, and Vibrations showcases his ability to craft killer, purist grooves. "Forplay" and "Steel Drums (Take 2)" are heads down, tribal rollers that will cause chaos on the dance floor, while "Transient" is a dense, drum track that takes its cues from the Lost / Cosmic strain of 90s techno. On "Multiply", Marcelus flirts with the legacy of Sativa and Dave Tarrida to create an unpredictable, sprawling groove. In between these pillars of functionality and wild abstraction Marcelus also delivers the introspective "Initial Sense" and the loose house groove of "Funky Datas". It's one of the bravest techno works of 2016.

Review: If this is what arrives in Tresor's inbox, then they are luckier than most labels. With a focus on tough techno, Demo Tracks 2 showcases some fine new talent. Acronym's "Nabu" is a dark rolling affair, its detailed textures creating a hypnotic cavernous sound. JC's "Chenox" is more direct, with rough, distorted drums fused with a slamming, grainy rhythm primed for the peak time. Neither can compare to Zadig's "Panic". The tempo is far higher, the rhythm more stripped back and visceral, and the arrangement filled with the kind of ferocious percussive bursts that would singe your hair if you stood too close to the speakers.
