Tresor

Berlin-based techno label Tresor landed in 1991. The label was born out of one the city’s most-respected underground techno clubs, following the fall of the Berlin Wall. Founded by Dimitri Hegemann, Tresor has been ‘forever re-defining techno as it contorts and manoeuvres around contemporary pressure and technological flux’. From deep, entrancing journeys, to rough, militant stompers, Tresor has released forward-thinking productions from the likes of: Cristian Vogel, Surgeon, Drexciya, Pacou, Mike Huckaby, Marcelus, James Ruskin, Joey Beltram, Robert Hood, Sleeparchive and more.

Review: The Zenker Brothers manage to cover such a wide range of styles on this EP, which says a lot about their growing production prowess. Better still, they take influence from more established artists without sounding like copyists. The broken metallic beats and mysterious effects of "Vamp Like" sound like a more playful version of Surgeon, while "Thirty-Who" is all reflective, dubby chords and introspective synths, reminiscent of Basic Channel. But it's the title track which delivers the killer blow; linear and slamming, it features a humming bass and a siren riff that replicates the sound of a freight train careering down the rails.

Review: Ysatis' output has been closely connected with Tresor, having released two albums for the German label. Now the Greek producer's work is getting reissued as part of the 'Archiv' series, and despite some of the tracks being close to 15 years old, nothing here sounds dated. "Mar's Bar" is a positively upbeat take on Basic Channel dub techno, its cavernous textures unfolding over a jerky groove. "On the Hook" sees Ysatis focus on a softer, more melodic take on dub techno via soft focus keys, while the most distinctive track is the chiming chords and surging bass of "Alright". The re-release also brings with it two remixes of "Alright", the first a rolling, cut-up techno workout from Blake Baxter and an uncharacteristic, introspective rework from Surgeon.

Review: On his first album since 2018, Waajeed unveils his interpretation of one of the Motor City's most distinctive sub-genres, hi-tech jazz. It's a conceptual piece of sorts, with the album not only designed to be listening to while cruising around in your car, but also timed to last the exact length of a journey between two notable Motor City landmarks. After getting things going with a chunk of killer ambient jazz (resplendent with poetic spoken word vocals from Black Nix), Waajeed cannily combines vivid, sci-fi electronics and cracking deep house beats with live jazz instrumentation and - on a couple of occasions - stunning string arrangements. Our picks of a very strong bunch include the glossy, broken jazz-funk lusciousness of 'The Ballad of Robert O'Bryant', the deep jazz-house excellence of 'The Dub' and the neo-classical swell of 'Rouge'

Review: Fittingly, the first single to be released from Waajeed's recent (and frankly brilliant) 'Memoirs of Hi-Tech Jazz' album is 'Motor City Madness', a sax-sporting marriage of Detroit jazz, techno and deep house sounds. The EP opens with an extended 12" take on the album version, before a swathe of remixers take over. The headline-grabbing rework comes from Motor City techno mainstays Underground Resistance, who re-imagine the track as a driving, sax-sporting slab of bass-heavy, house-tempo techno futurism smothered in sci-fi strings. Elsewhere, Zo!, Tall Black Guy, Michelle Manzo and De'Sean Jones join forces as People Mover to drop a decidedly intergalactic-sounding, breakbeat-driven hi-tech jazz take, while the SHE Spells Doom remix is a breathless, Afro-house-tinged broken beat take that's as tough and infectious as they come.

Review: Detroit's Waajeed is best known for his work with Platinum Pied Pipers and Slum Village in the hip-hop/R&B arena, but this EP for Tresor finds him in beatdown territory, and with the mighty Underground Resistance also onboard it really is a must if deep, jazzy grooves are your thang. It's only a fat, squelchy electronic bassline that really separates the trumpet-driven 12" Version and accompanying Edit from what you might call "jazz proper", leaving the UR crew with the job of adding more overtly floor-friendly 4/4 beats and bringing the sax further to the fore - but this is sheer class whichever mix you plump for.

Review: Waajeed's 2022 album, Memoirs Of Hi-Tech Jazz, was a paean to Detroit's musical heritage from techno to hip-hop and beyond. It comes as no surprise that this remix package is just as sonically diverse. The Yazzus version of "The Ballad of Robert O'Bryant" fuses frenetic jazz drums and percussion with a driving rhythm and an acid-fuelled tones. In stark contrast, the Jensen Interceptor x Assembler Code take on "Memoirs of Hi-Tech Jazz" is a stark electro workout, with a ferocious steely rhythm and murderous bass prevailing. Mark Broom's remix of "Right Now" is a more conventional techno track. Centred on a rolling tribal groove, it features dramatic stabs and a robust bassline.

Review: As befits one of techno's most revered labels, Tresor 30 is a comprehensive collection that takes in a breath-taking array of artists and sounds. The compilation features classics, such as Underground Resistance's "Final Frontier", remixed here into a clubbier shape, the spellbinding deep techno of Juan Atkins' "I Love You" and Jeff Mills' timeless banger, "Late Night", one of Tresor's signature tracks. These eternal works sit alongside contributions from newer artists: in particular, Afrodeutsche's "Can't Stop" is a wonderfully dreamy affair, while RRoxymore's "Multiplicity" teases new twists from percussive techno. Thirty years after its inception, Tresor is showing no signs of slowing down.

Review: Dreamy Harbour celebrates 25 years of Berlin institution Tresor with several new and unreleased cuts by staples of the club and its seminal in house label alike. Featuring work of artists from the US, Germany, China, France, Austria, Italy and the UK, it is worth dwelling on how the cultural conditions that birthed Detroit techno (ie economic neglect and broken industry) were mirrored by the disused bunkers and impromptu parties of post-unification East Berlin. Techno a found new, vigorous expression. "Without Tresor, Berlin would not be what it is today," concludes founder Dimitri Hegemann. "Even though it sounds a bit pretentious, it is true. Tresor was the prototype for an extraordinary club. It was only possible as a combination of the right time, the right place, the right content and determined people." Excerpt of liner notes, by Rob Sharp - November 2016.

Review: This compilation was released as part of the overall "Kotti Island" artistic project - whose origins lie in artists exploring the Kotbusser Tor in Berlin. The area's communist-era architecture is captured well on the brooding ambient soundscapes of Zettka's "cS?n?r D??" and project lead Cecilia Tosh's grainy techno stomper, "Blend". On "Walking In Circles", Jon Hester reimagines this part of the German capital in a different way, with the hum and whoosh of the S-Bahn and busy streets set to a drum-heavy, hypnotic club track. Meanwhile, on "Berlin Speed Drive", Vril drops a throbbing, ominous bass; combined with firing hi hats and a driving rhythm, it brilliantly sums up the ups and downs of life on Kotti Island.

Review: Celebrating its 350th release, Tresor delivers a compilation with a difference. Instead of the steely techno that has defined the club and label, Yet is all about left of centre sounds. There's the ethnic chants of Nandele & A-Tweed's "Deserto", while on "Lovesong" Nadia Struiwigh combines woozy sub-bass with mid-tempo drums. Ryan James Ford's "Totes (Bath mix)" does steer the compilation back towards the dance floor, but it's with a twist, as clattering break beats provide the backdrop for introspective synths. It's only a temporary divergence though - "No Longer Human" is a moody stepper, while DJ Sotofett and Kavadi's "Kandhan Karunai" sees the pair drop a frenetic, fragmented rhythm that defies categorisation.

Review: There's something undeniably bleak about the work of Berlin-based Belgian Peter Van Hoesen. He specializes in dark, uncompromising, no-holds-barred techno, and has previously impressed - or scared, depending on your techno threshold - with a pair of albums on his own Time To Express label. Here, he pops up on Tresor - arguably the world's most reliable source of subterranean techno stomp - with his third full length. Originating from a live performance by the Belgian at Tresor's Berlin venue earlier this year, it's a typically no-nonsense set that flits between bleep-heavy warped futurism (see "Carbon" and "Exciting Reward"), loopy darkroom pump ("Challenger") and Jeff Mills style techno-jack ("Assembly").

Review: UFO95 is the latest producer to land on Tresor - and Backward Improvement packs a powerful punch. "Fragment" is a robust, ebm-themed workout. Led by a pounding bass, it shoots shards of spiky percussion through the speakers. On "Gargk", he changes tact, dropping a frenetic break beat track led by atmospheric synths and warbling synths. "Solar" marks another shift in sound - over a punishing groove, UFO95 rains down coruscating riffs. "Cogitor" is also a bruising piece, but with a different approach as steely drums prevail. Meanwhile, "Sexual Tension" sees intense tones and a vocal sample unfold over a relentless groove - the kind of track that will have the desired impact on Tresor's main floor.

Review: Thirty years after its original release, Tresor puts out a re-mastered version of Moondance. The work of German producer Udo Heitfeld, it draws on mysticism and the human sub-conscious as much as it does on various electronic music sources and references to create a mesmerising work. Tracks like "Strange World" sound like a lounge take on Yello, while on "Rendezvous In Space" and "Mood Dance: The Original", TV Victor moves into the dubbed out space that the Orb inhabited around the early 90s. Meanwhile "They Are Coming" is a brilliantly moody, slowed down techno workout and "Lunatic Creature" is melancholic downtempo affair that pre-dates Mo'Wax. Nearly three decades later, Moondance remains a stellar, atmospheric affair.

Review: Transparent Sound, established in Bognor in 1994, is among the UK's most enduring electro acts. This dynamic collaboration between Orson Bramley and Martin Brown has solidified Transparent Sound's reputation as one of the most influential electro duo with a discography boasting a collection of highly acclaimed releases that have garnered significant recognition within the electronic music scene. This retrospective album "Accidents 1994-2023" compiles a fortunate selection of 13 awe-inspiring electrical mishaps. This comprehensive collection features dancefloor anthems like "Punk Mother Fucker," which once graced the sets of Villalobos, and "No Call From New York," as heard on Helena Hauff's exceptional 2017 Essential Mix. Additionally, the album includes the unreleased white label track "Windows To Your Sole" from Transparent Sound 007, exclusive unreleased tracks, special 2023 edits, and a digital bonus of six additional tracks.

Review: One would immediately not pair Thomas Fehlman, the renowned German experimentalist, with techno minimalist Terrence Dixon, but this album still makes perfect artistic sense. Although the pair had never met before they recorded it around the time of last year's Detroit's Movement festival, their sensibilities overlap seamlessly from the outset. Fehlmann's playful abstract nuances and Dixon's pointillist sense of repetition make tracks like "The Corner" and "Patterns & Senses" danceable but also deeply experimental. While Dixon's hypnotic approach takes over on the driving "Strings In Space", in the main, this is an work of creative equals, as the steppy "Experiment 3" and the deep space ambience of "Landline" demonstrate.

Review: Robert Hood, the renowned techno producer, is set to reissue one of his most influential albums to mark its 30th anniversary. Originally released in 1993 under his alias, The Vision, "Waveform Transmission Vol. 2" encapsulates the raw techno sound that has come to define Hood's music. The album was created just as Hood was leaving his hometown of Detroit and moving to New York with Jeff Mills, his cofounder of the Underground Resistance label. Tresor, the German record label, has delved deep into its archives to bring a fresh release of this classic album to fans. With funky techno drum foundations and mind-bending details, "Waveform Transmission Vol. 2" set the bar high and has aged incredibly well. All hail Robert Hood!
