Tru Thoughts

Founded in Brighton in 1999 by Robert Luis and Paul Jonas, the label Tru Thoughts doesn’t need any introduction now. The label has put out numerous albums and EPs, across genres from electronic, funk, soul and hip hop to jazz, tropical, grime and more. While Bonobo’s debut album, ‘Animal Magic’ marked the first album in 2000 under the label, the list of artists who released under Tru Thoughts is full of great names with the likes of Quantic, Nostalgia 77, Alice Russell and TM Juke but also Maddslinky aka Zed Bias, Flowdan, Titeknots, Hint, Zero dB, Omar and many more. Tru Thoughts is not just a label but also has a publishing company called Full Thought Publishing, organizes many club nights between Brighton and London, and broadcasts on several radio stations.

Review: Let's be real here for a second. There are few vocal artists within the extended circles of grime that boast as high a work rate as Flowdan, a legendary MC with a catalogue of clouty bangers. This latest project takes the title 'The Red Pill', showcasing a different side of his character. There is still a tonne of versatility involved with this one however, from the haunted overtones of 'Savage' alongside Jammz and 'Time Is Money' with Roachee, to the demonic, stripped back structures of 'Upset' with catchy vocal hooks from Snowman Baby. Finally, 'Tell Me Nothing' runs with a very experimental instrumental, letting gunshots and emotive chords run wild beneath Flowdan's unique storytelling approach. This is definitely a different approach, complete with instrumentals and acapellas to match!

Review: Will Holland's 'Search The Heavens' was first released in 2002, but it's the 2003 remix package that's getting reissued here, packing re-rubs from Atjazz (AKA Martin Iveson) and Carmel (AKA Marcell Dudas). Whether by accident or design we'll never know, but the two remixes put together sum up Quantic's appeal nicely: Iveson's pass is shuffly, light-on-its-feet and has the scatty female vocal front and centre, making it one for floors where broken beat sits with soulful house and nu-jazz, while Dudas's mix is an altogether squelchier, more beats-driven pass with an alternative spoken, reggae-style male vocal, so one for the "broken beat, funk and breaks" floors.
