Review: Originally introduced in July last year through the Tru Thoughts label, French producers Nikitch & Kuna Maze were brought together for the release of D?buts, a collaborative album which for this release sees the one track "46 Rue Du Fort" lifted for remixes by producers Sivy and Crafty 893. The original blends house and jazz with new age synth explorations and future sounds of brass and neo-soul which sees Sivey rebuff the track with robust licks of guitar and a reamped funk. Crafty 893 keeps focused on the track's original loop sequence, opting to colour it with breathy vocal textures of UKG inspired pop and a set of sweet two-step influences. Tru Thought. Tru tones.

Review: Three tracks in a total of five mixes make up this new EP from New Orleans' most famous marching band. First up is the Reassembled By Wrongtom remix of recent Joy Division cover 'Love Will Tear Us Apart', which takes the track into dubby pastures while the Hot 8's trademark horns add a little Latin flava. J-Felix's remix of the same track is a more hip-hop inspired pass, while in-between you'll find two rubs of 'On The Spot' - Magic Drum Orchestera's is jazzy and percussive while Animanz's has more of a broken beat feel - plus the big, live band stylings of 'Working Together' itself.

Review: As the title suggests, the debut album from London four-piece Amimanz and Argentinian-Congolese vocalist Juanita Euka is something of a humid, tropical affair. Euka's multi-lingual vocals take centre stage throughout, though it's the vibrancy of the band's superb backing tracks that hit home hardest. Their style is naturally rooted in tropical music, but also draws heavily on exotic dancefloor funk, horn-heavy Afro-beat, fuzzy psychedelic rock, jaunty Afro-Cuban dub (see their inspired cover of Crystal Waters' house classic "Gypsy Woman") and a variety of complimentary South American styles. Highlights are plentiful throughout, from the hot and sweaty, hard-wired heaviness of "Them Changes" and sunshine funk workout "Chameleon", to the spiraling, all-action "Reload It" and suitably hallucinatory, cumbia-tinged "Drink The Water". Impressive stuff, all told.

Review: New Orleans' Grammy nominated Hot 8 Brass Band release their fifth LP. The title of the new album refers to that special moment in a New Orleans parade when the band stops to take a break but keeps noodling with their instruments for the crowd. When they're completely in the moment: they sync up and the magic happens - a new tune is created: On The Spot. It also points to the way the band have had to adapt, learn and live from moment to moment throughout their careers and their lives. A tragic series of events - the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, the separate deaths of five band members plus trumpeter Terrell "Burger" Batiste losing his legs in a car crash: these moments have tested these men time and again. Their life-affirming story has been featured in the Spike Lee documentaries When The Levees Broke and The Creek Don't Rise plus David Simon's HBO series Treme. In true Hot 8 style, this album pairs hard hitting, heart-on-sleeve sentiment with party fuelling beats, hooks and grooves; raw funk and charismatic hip hop vocals mix with Big Easy jazz elegance. "We still break down a lot," says bandleader and tuba player Bennie Pete, "but now it's tears of joy. We keep everything in our hearts, but we keep on."

Review: The UK's Lakuta is a collective of musicians DJs and producers, with members from as far afield as Africa, Asia and Europe. They recently dropped the LP Brothers & Sisters on Tru Thoughts, to great acclaim and now the single "Rice & Peace" follows on. The swinging Afro-funk gets a series of remix treatments including the deep and sultry Dorylus' Balearic Jerk Re-Rub, Whilst elsewhere, "So Sue Us" is turned into a brassy tropical anthem by VB Kahhl, "Bata Boy" becomes a hip-hop abstraction in the hands of Dizreali and "Ultimate Robot" is given and electro dub makeover by Captain Over.

Review: J-Felix is the solo moniker of Bristolian producer, multi-instrumentalist and musical wizard, Joe F Newman. Now based in Brighton and quickly snapped up by Tru Thoughts, we now get a solo album inspired by his investigations into all the funk and soul samples heard in the DnB and hip-hop that he grew up with. However research is where the samples end for Newman, instead he layers recordings of his own vocals and instrumental pieces into a beguiling 15 track organic jam with more than a nod to his beloved white-gloved, dry-iced and jheri-curled 80s p-funk and synth soul.

Review: This guy is a producer who marches to the beat of his own drum (machine) having recently released his first album for seven years. "Generation", he's now finally releasing a single from it. This EP is really an album sampler, featuring three tracks culled from the long player. It's a good introduction to a good album, covering perky 60s shufflebeat on "Generation", rolling and lose hepcat jazz "Vanguard" and the brooding soul-hop of "Bronx Life".

Now their A&R dude Robert Luis has decided to compile their best disco-style releases, and why not? The Quantic Soul Orchestra's "Pushin On" is cinematic foot music built around an infectious loop, Zed Bias revisits 1980s Minneapolis with the help of Toddla T on the downright nasty groove of "Koolade", Bonobo remixes Nostalgia 77's "Quiet Dawn" in a downtempo jazzy style, Hint's "Aliens Enter" is as close you can get to 80s synth-soul without a time machine and Natural Self's "In The Morning" is a killer, off kilter jazz-meets-funk-and-dubby-house oddity.
