Review: Benji Vaughan, known for his work with Prometheus and Younger Brother, returns with Eidolon - a new solo album exploring a world of unpredictable sonic territories. Released 25 years since his debut on Twisted (with Clarity from Deep Fog), Eidolon maintains the vibe but goes somewhere else. A safely bizarre record, Benji Vaughan takes in krautrock as much as he does experimental electronic, ambient beat-making, wild synth arrangements, and don't forget the dub. With newer-school Thome Yorke suggestions to be found in tracks like "Scatter Brain" also, Eidolon is another sound example how far solo experimental music makers can take their trade.
Review: Three years ago, self-proclaimed "psy-dub" specialist Cosmic Trigger (real name Jamie Grashion) made his Twisted bow by remixing cuts from the catalogue of 1990s psychedelic ambient sorts Shpongle. Here he returns to the imprint with his first full EP for the long-serving outlet. Inspired by his love of hunting for psychedelic mushrooms, 'Forager's Delight' blends laidback digi-dub rhythms and attractive electronic melodies with trippy noises and plenty of '90s ambient style sounds. Highlights include the sunrise-ready stumble of 'Passage', the warped, mind-mangling dancefloor dub psychedelia of 'Chrysanthemum', the glitchy and eccentrically picturesque 'Forager', and the EP's heaviest and most sub-heavy offering, killer closing cut 'Garden of Pomegranates'.
Review: There's something ominously foreboding yet wholly alluring about the sounds of Flux & Contemplation, Simon Posford's debut solo album. Spurred by the recent lockdown, the album delves deep into themes of isolation in 2020, bringing together swathes of dub and drone to bird song, minimal piano and beatless numbers like "On A Rainy Day" and "Cyclical Ruminations". Find straight up rhythm tracks in "The New Normal", "Wish You Weren't Here" and the nebulous "The Hobbyist" with its shimmering
atmospheres, holographic vocals and hissing percussion. Proof of what an artist can achieve when left only with time and their devices.
