Review: Opal Tapes and Lobster Theremin aside, S Olbricht has landed on some of the most interesting independent house and techno labels over the last three years, and so this new EP for Lee Gamble's UIQ seems like a natural fit. This guy's style of house and techno is as loose and leftfield as you can possibly get for club music, a starting from the slithering beats and swamped sonics of "137x3brk" we get an instant picture of Olbricht's freedom behind that mixing desk. This open-minded take on the genre is yet more evident on the gloriously off-kilter "Ktyring", and reaches a total climax of abstraction though the nearly beatless "J UC". "F1oa1" is a hard techno missile in terms of its beats, but the melodies gliding high in the mix have more in common with ambient than anything dance-based. It's a real excursion...the sort of EP that makes the whole 'outsider' moniker seem credible.

Review: Over the last five years, Lee Gamble has surely solidified his name as top dog among the techno deviants, and each time one of his new releases drops onto our shelves ours ears prick up instantly. Having made a name for himself on PAN, it's now time to curate his own UIQ label, and "004" is exactly the sort of tune to catch the listener's attention: an unsteady techno beat that mangles it way through rough, distorted waters. In the same way, "For Infernomatics" challenges the status quo, and renders the techno experience a much more wide-eyed, wholesome experience that branches off into different territories. "Kinematics" develops this 3D techno feel further thanks to the help of a sea of washed-out sonics and brittle beats, while "Cnull" heads towards the genreless, the only thing placing it anywhere near dance music being its jittery, improvisational kick-hi-hat combo. Excellent.

Ahmed? - (4:43) 55 BPM
Dr Beckett - (3:11) 129 BPM
Review: Lee Gamble's UIQ imprint got off to a promising start last year with the Wrong Headspace 12" from Latvian artist N1L. Gamble's purview for the label is clearly international as this second UIQ release dips into the world of Zuli, aka Ahmed El Ghazoly, Egyptian multi-instrumentalist, producer and DJ based in Cairo. Limited to 400 copies. Jagged beat experiments merge with high definition sound design plus classic and exotic instrumentation on "Robotic Handshakes in 4D", it's an apt title, really. New frontiers in bass music are explored on "131001G", texturised minimal techno on "Ahmed?" and rather abrasive bass assisted noise experiments like on final track "Dr Beckett". What next for UIQ? Consider us intrigued.
