Review: Next up from DJ Physical, a fiery four track display expanding across the new school realms of breakbeat, coming to us courtesy of Unknown To The Unknown. We open up with the heavily arpeggiated synthesiser lines and intense 4x4 drum slaps of 'Red Scarf', followed by a switch up in pacing as the more footwork inspired arrangements of 'Still On A Mission' give us a new combination to enjoy. From here, 'A Little Deeper' focusses on dripping percussion and hardcore low ended drum roles, followed by the spacey chord progressions and moody subs of the title track 'Midnight Marauder'.

Review: Pyramid of Knowledge makes its debut on UTTU, following a string of releases featuring captivating, psychedelic-infused house tracks on labels such as Craigie Knowes, Hard Beach, and Dream Ticket. This release offers three original tracks, accompanied by a remix from e-freq, with the originals delving into deep, acidic and Detroit, Drexciyan electro vibes. With "Diffusion" the show stealer here, get your deeper, gnarlier slices from "Oerc" with flashes of positivity coming through in "World Heroes" that in remix form is stretched out to something linear with darker house vibes.

Droney - (5:26) 125 BPM
Simple Dimple - (6:05) 89 BPM
Review: Following the release of his fine album The New Normal on Houndstooth last year, veteran house and techno producer Mark Hawkins has jined DJ Haus's retro-futurist Unknown To The Unnown label. The EP he's delivered is genuinely impressive, from the rubbery synth bass, sci-fi techno sounds, deep house chords and Motor City drums of 'Snow Day', to the drowsy, alien-sounding early morning hypnotism of 'Droney' and the starburst techno rush of 'Simple Dimple', where ethereal synthesizer lines dance atop breathless beats and stabbing bass. Title track 'The Wash', an uluta-deep and intergalactic affair that's more melancholic than upbeat, is also superb.

Review: Taking inspiration from Mesopotamian iconography and symbolism Mark Hawkins outta the UK hooks up with Donnell Knox aka D-Knox from Kalamazoo (and the great Sonic Mind label). A sweet fusion of Detroit-Chicago electro with some UK intensity looms large in a deep and original lead cut "12th Planet". Throwing down something more vocal yet slamming and soulful at the same time is "I Don't Want To", while there's some tinges of dub techno and submerged, spooky tropics in "Marimba". And dat mix for da club: go "12th Planet Underground".

Hell Is Other People
Neil Landstrumm & Si Begg - "Hell Is Other People" - (5:15) 130 BPM Hot
Aviemore - (5:30) 126 BPM
Jackshit - (5:10) 130 BPM
Played by: Joyce Muniz
Review: Neil Landstrumm has enjoyed something of a career revival of late, with killer EPs on Central Processing Unit, Running Back and Unknown to the Unknown re-asserting his long-held dancefloor credentials. Naturally, there's plenty more retro-futurist club fodder to be found on the Scottish producer's latest EP, which - as per usual - contains numerous sonic references to turn-of-the-90s bleep and bass. The standout cut is undoubtedly Si Begg hook-up "Hell Is Other People", a fiendishly raw, bass-heavy chunk of techno/electro fusion full of analogue intensity, weirdo robot vocals and Yorkshire style bleeps. He continues on a similarly sparse but weighty theme on "Aviemore", before wrapping a sleazy, Belgian style techno groove with spooky electronics on mind-altering closing cut "Jackshit".

Review: Prolific Australian producer Bell Towers is back, this time on DJ Haus' imprint with a bunch of solid cosmic house grooves. The Berlin (by way of Melbourne) based producer follows up some great stuff in recent times for Public Possession, Permanent Vacation and Hell Yeah with the neon-lit balearic house of "My Body Is A Temple" and likewise "My Body Is A Tempo" which is reworked by homeboy Andras (Dopeness Galore/House Of Dad) and ventures deeper into trippier territory.

Institute Of The Overmind - (6:53) 125 BPM
Institute Of The Overmind (Photonz remix) - (4:06) 126 BPM Hot
Review: In years to come, Danny Wolfers might be compared favourably to musical mavericks such as Sun Ra. Certainly, he's always been an artist ahead of his time, who makes and releases a dizzying amount of material, on a confusing array of labels, under a similarly befuddled number of aliases. Here he dons the familiar Legowelt alias and returns to Unknown To The Unknown with "Institute of the Overmind", a cheery acid wiggler that successfully combines sharp and hooky 303 lines with punishing, snare-heavy rhythms, skewed vocal samples and just the right amount of evocative, synthesizer sweetness. Check out FACT TV to see Wolfers produce the cut in real time, whilst DJ Haus looks on amazed. Label regular Photonz provide the flipside remix, emphasizing Wolfers' synthesizer hooks and acid lines on an undeniably sweet, attractive and ravey revision.

Review: Well, we can't exactly say that we expected Merimell to land on Unknown To The Unknown, but it somehow feels just right! The artist who has previously released for the likes of Germany's Desolat, reshapes his sound here into something much freer, bouncier, and more old-school. In fact, "Workout" is a classic Chicago booty house kinda smacker - backed by a deeper and more mechanical remix by Palace Refix - and the same goes for the slithering house roller that is "Getting Hot". The Soft Pink Truth Climate Change mix is perhaps the shining moment on here, and it makes for a seriously catchy groove with a blaster for a bassline!

Review: After popping up on Opal Tapes amongst other cult labels over the past couple of years, DJ Ford Foster has made the move to Unknown To The Unknown and he's in the mood to get nasty. "Gold Cans" is a primal slice of gritty jack business that moves in the stiffest possible groove, while every single drum sound seems to grind its teeth to make the grizzly synth feel at home. "Let's Go" has a definite ghetto house flavour to it, while "Black Candles" gets more deranged with a whole lot of sample triggering and background droning behind the jackhammer beats. "Fake Shoes" is equally unhinged and upfront in its approach, making this a perfect release for the UTTU mission.

House Of Dolls Jonny Trunk Remix!!
House Of Dolls (Jonny Trunk remix) - (4:34) 62 BPM
Played by: Digitalworkx
Review: Capracara's "House Of Dolls" was one of Unknown To The Unknown's finest tracks last year, and here it gets a reworking from library music and soundtrack specialist Jonny Trunk. The hookup, we can only assume, came through Burnip's appreciation of slasher movie soundtracks, and the result is as out there as you could imagine - stripping the radiophonic bleeps from the original, Trunk leaves only an echo of the original's melody and adds some acoustic samples to glue the remix together. Propelled by nothing other than a simple kick drum, it's what you might imagine a music concrete version of house music to sound like.
