Review: Bay area analogue fetishist Vin Sol pops up on Unknown To The Unknown with a stargazing chunk of retro-futurist party acid. "Edges of a Vortex" packs the ghetto-inspired drum funk of Dance Mania and the low-end bounce of Virgo Four into a bass music-inspired slab of stab-laden euphoria (think snaking synth sax, stomping rhythms and rumbling Chi-town bass). "Voice Chip Activ8", meanwhile, sounds like the bastard offspring of Luke Vibert, Jeff Mills and DJ Rashad. Matrixxman remixes, turning the relentless original into a slack-jawed acid groover.

Review: Remixes for days in the haus with Pre-Rolled Joints Vol 2: Remix Collection, Pt. 2 by Unknown To The Unknown. Kicking of with a sultry Kelis vibe in Ludwig A.F's remix of "Sweat It Out", other highlights include Hashman Deejay doing the business on a Ruf Dug number, Andras turning over some proto-techno on Bell Towers, with Shed going all time on UTTU boss man's "Bit Too Deep". Willie Burns drops a spooky remake of Max's D's legendary "High Life", next to some reliable Legowelt wares, a Roza Terenzi rework of Assembler Code and final dose of Fantastic Man who goes deep with a luscious mix of DJ Shark's "Closer".

Review: David Willenberger's TRP alias has had no problems in finding plenty of love from the house audiences ever since his first EP for Lobster Theremin. But that's not difficult to understand; his music is effective, catchy, and a perfect example of the sort of gear that gets people moving these days. He's up on the ever-impressive Unknown To The Unknown this week, and starts with "DS4", a menacing, pig-headed techno bounce smothered in deep acid love. The title tune "Gunz" is a fiery, intricate punch of drunken drums and hissing percussion stabs going off all over the shop, whereas "Service" floats neatly in a dream-like state thanks to the help of a delicious array of sliding drums. Tough and gorgeous.

Review: Claws for thought... Tommy The Cat returns to Unknown To The unknown for the fourth instalment of his Cosmik Connection series. Each cut laced with cavernous space and big atmospheric flurries, from the opening blasts and star-lit shards of the intro 'Destination Unknown' to the final wistful pads of the closer 'Reminiscing', this is Tommy at his deepest and more emotional. Music that will have you purring with glee, Tommy The Cat is on some timeless tackle right here. Feline good.

Review: UTTU return with what is probably their most impressive release yet; The Sadist, a collaboration by the legendary DJ Stingray, and Unknown To The Unknown's DJ Haus. It certainly lives up to its namesake, with "The Sadist (Part One) employing a 160BPM tempo and a searing electro bassline, and furious drum programming that brings the influence of Chicago juke to Stingray's Detroit leaning template. Part two of "The Sadist" meanwhile concentrates more on rapid 808 drum programming and more fluid synths, dragging the listener remorselessly through a world of alien sounds and breakbeat bass. The remixes meanwhile are something very special indeed, with Drexciya's Heinrich Mueller reworking "The Sadist" with a slower tempo, brittle, frosty synth shards and weird transmissions from the other side, and Cestrian (aka Ali Renault) provides similarly great remix of "The Sadist Pt 2", employing all manner of analogue arpeggios in a fine approximation of Detroit's finest.

Review: After sturdy appearances on Numbers and Local Action, Slackk returns to one of his earlier outposts in the form of Unknown To The Unknown, throwing down a curious mixture of oriental folk music with grime-inspired beats and the occasional flurry of vintage computer game MIDI business. The beats are slippery and jerky on "Inland" where the synth comes in all side-chained and disjointed, with only gun shots for ballast on the buoyant groove. "Wolf Creek" brings on the aforementioned Monkey Island vibes, using curious keys and harmonies to create a decidedly eerie atmosphere, while "Blue Forest" is arguably the spiciest tune on the EP with its urgent percussion and more involved arrangements of lute action worked into a stomping 140 bpm rhythm.

Review: An intriguing coming together of bass talents on this double-tracker from Unknown To The Unknown, which features Sinden and 5kinandbone getting marvellously murky and dubby on the half-steppin' dread of "Coin Power", while Sinden passes the baton to Canadian outfit Babe Rainbow, who also collaborate with 5kinandbone on the minimal tech-step of the equally sinister "Dis You Knock".

Bad Boy (Jook 10 remix) - (5:40) 129 BPM
Tempest Storm - (5:02) 128 BPM
Review: Despite often playing second fiddle to his original partner The Count aka Herve, Graeme Sinden is still doing alright for himself. Having recently relocated to LA, his relentless productivity is beginning to bear fruit with this, his first solo release of 2013. Despite being the other side of the Atlantic both tracks here display distinct UK influences: "Bad Boy" fuses choppy, fidgety loops, a ragga MC sample and some seriously wobbly UKF. The best track though, is the more linear "Tempest Storm" which features long deep house loops and some absolutely lovely garage-inspired melodies.

Review: Simone 'Simoncino' Vescovo has forged a successful career out of creating analogue-rich dancefloor workouts that pay tribute to the early days of Chicago house. This makes the Italian producer a perfect fit for DJ Haus's similarly retro-minded Unknown To The Unknown imprint. "Gherkin Tape", an undulating, alien-sounding and undeniably jacking workout, sounds like an authentic, long-lost Larry Heard jam under the Gherkin Jerks alias. Fittingly, it's remixed by early '90s Dance Mania survivor Houz'mon, who adds waves of mind-altering TB-303 electronics and a punchier, pitched-up beat pattern. Bonus track "Din Sync", a cymbal and kick-drum driven chunk of swirling Chicago jack after several tabs of acid, completes a tasty package.

Matta - (3:50) 120 BPM Hot
Hydrate (Photonz remix) - (6:50) 124 BPM
Review: UTTU helpfully describe this release from Boysnoize affiliates Shadow Dancer as "dungeon acid". It's an apt description. Ooozing with energy, it sounds like the revivalist rave fare recently offered up by the excellent R-Zone imprint. "Hydrate" darts around impressively, all chopped up vocals, darkroom samples, colossal builds and rave-era stavs. Photonz handle remix duties, turning the in-your-face original into an intense chunk of nightmarish acid techno that seems to be the product of a particularly freakish trip. That's a good thing, mind. Bonus cut "Matta", on the other hand, offers the sort of classic 303 thrills last heard emerging from the studios of Phuture and Virgo Four at the tail end of the 1980s.

Review: The latest UTTU drop sees the first tangible material from RuF Dug and Samrai, two long term fixtures on the Manchester clubbing scene and close friends. Of the two RuF Dug will probably be the more familiar to those outside of MCR, thanks to his Ruf Kutz label and prospering production output for Sud, Porn Wax, Banoffee Pies and more though Swing Ting man Samrai has been cutting his teeth of late with drops on Niche N Bump and Keysound. It's fairly hard to drop genre bombs on their two tracks here with both "1st Observation" and "2nd Observation" throwing various stylistic elements into the mixer and evening them out over some nicely left leaning house rhythms. Mood Hut's Hashman Deejay and rising Aussie production unit Zanzibar Chanel are great picks for remix purposes, adding further sonic personality to a record that stands apart from a lot of current "deep house".

This release offers three original tracks, accompanied by a remix from e-freq, with the originals delving into deep, acidic and Detroit, Drexciyan electro vibes. With "Diffusion" the show stealer here, get your deeper, gnarlier slices from "Oerc" with flashes of positivity coming through in "World Heroes" that in remix form is stretched out to something linear with darker house vibes.

Review: Former L2S player and MJ Cole remixer Duncan Powell rejigs his 2009 banger "Brake" on this new release from Unknown To The Unknown. The original - previously known and loved from Hot City's Fact mix of the same year - is included here thankfully and still shines thanks to its ultra-funky minimal garage motifs and catchy-as-hell chiming melody. The 2012 mix however throws some real fire at the tune - adding thicker kicks and some deeper sub bass whilst still keeping the rude funk locked in.

Review: Before we say anything, here's what the artist blurb said: "This is what happens when 3 Tumblr personalities manage to transcend time and space and use virtual reality to create some of the most warped ghetto house and techno this side of Second Life." There is no way we're going to argue with that. Heavy duty aggression mixed with a massive dose of slow-release intensity reaching through each tune makes this four tracker a must-cop for techno and deep house heads looking for something harder. Be brave. Just try it, you never know, you might like it.

Review: Back in the 90s, US techno producer Steve Stoll released an EP on white vinyl in the shape of a circular saw. The art for the latest release on DJ Haus' label looks similar to that release - and doesn't sound radically different either. In fact, the only real difference to Stoll's 1995 release is the absence of forceful acid pulses - otherwise, P.O.L Style's "Saw" and the "Saw 2" version crackle with insistent percussion, insistent stabs and an insistent, jacking rhythm. Remixes from Mike Q and Neana, which add a banging, drum-heavy sensibility to the original "Saw", complete the package.

Review: After some initial forays into the lime light for the likes of Hippos In Tanks, Physical Therapy gets the golden ticket in to the deranged Unknown To The Unknown workhouse to turn out some of that irreverent but archly delivered party-smashing business. "C'mere" is a perfect case in point, putting forwards a strong argument for how deep footwork-infused electro can be, while at the same time keeping the cheeky vocal samples bouncing around with wild abandon. "The Black Night Is Calling My Name" keeps things low-slung and rude, while the title track speaks more to a dishevelled, mildly unhinged version of deep house. It's a fun and creatively worthwhile EP at every turn, which is exactly why it fits perfectly on UTTU.

Review: With over 20 releases in less than two years UTTU have managed to uphold their credibility, so often lost with labels who spit out song after song like copy machines (to quote Lil' Louis' French Kiss), and this release from Portugeuse pairing Photonz is another killer. Balearic, beatdown and busy electro with hints of a 80s Hollywood action soundtrack make up the ten-minute title "Hurt Me Hurt Me". Piqued melodies and synthesised pan pips are treated to 707 workouts in "Veracruz", remixed by Boy s Noize Records stalwarts Shadow Dancer who up the BPM and exercise their Warp Records influences.

1551 (HALP remix) - (3:12) 135 BPM
Review: Portuguese duo Photonz' latest track "1551", is described by Unknown To The Unknown as "Anti Illuminati Egyptian Trance House". It's somewhat apt as a description, as the track's tumbling tropical rhythms are joined by the kind of hypnotic melodic arrangement that gets right under your skin alongside some piano chords that make the whole thing sound like Chicago house as invented by Giorgio Moroder. As ever with UTTU, high calibre remixes are on the table also; Capracara turns in a surprisingly UK funky-inspired revision, Walter Ego turns it into a bass-heavy broken garage banger, and HALP smashes it into tiny pieces and rearranges it into a weird hybrid of IDM, footstep and dubstep. Essential!

Haku & Chihiro - (5:19) 132 BPM
Review: Best known for his work on Principe and his own One Eyed Jacks imprint, Photonz aka Marco Rodrigues now delivers a blistering EP for DJ Haus' label. "Neo Tokyo" is constructed on a jacking house backing and powered by a gut-busting jungle bass. On "Wall Rose", eerie hardcore riffs move up through an acid-soaked techno rhythm, while "Eva Unit-01" is more menacing. Like Suburban Knight on an especially bad trip, it features frazzled bass tones and high pitched, watery riffs, making for a decidedly disoriented combination. Rounding off the release with the pacy techno rhythm and rolling drums of "Haku & Chihiro", Metanime demonstrates again that Photonz is an idiosyncratic producer.

Review: Stepping up to the raucous surroundings of Unknown To The Unknown, Palace comes bringing the right kind of bass-laden swagger you expect from this ever-strengthening imprint. "Trust" is a monster, led by a coarse garage drum jive and a b-line cheeky enough to get every wallflower within fifty metres shucking. There's no doubting the instantaneous results this banger will bring, and the remixes are no shirkers either. Matrixxman cools the heat slightly with a mildly stripped variation on the original's driving theme, while the Mista Men opt instead to bring a seriously funky house shuffle to bear on the bin-bothering party antics.

Hyper Logic
Hyper Logic - (7:26) 132 BPM
Review: Following on from its recent flirtation with pre-jungle break beat and rave, DJ Haus' prolific label looks at another old school style courtesy of Oushe. Despite having just one previous release to his credit, Hyper Logic sounds like the work of a veteran who has been active since the early 80s. Mysterious synth stabs accompany a pitched down robo-vocal and gritty bass licks as Oushe navigates a path between Miami funk and Detroit futurism. Executed against a backdrop of insistent 808s and featuring gaudy covert art, this is one of Unknown to the Unknown's most intriguing releases to date.

Review: Parisian maestro in all things electro, emerging producer Nemo Vachez has impressed recently with releases for his own Forest ill imprint, Rakya and London's Opia. Making a comfortable transition to Unknown To The Unknown, this Serena EP notches up UTTU's fifth release for 2020 and it doesn't take long to understand it's all about "Serena". As if channelling the deeper frequencies of UK rave culture, the opening notes of the title track, eventually met with 303 acid basslines and bleepy percussion, brings to mind classic numbers from Orbital or LFO. The SYO Transe Total Mix does away with the original's bells and whistles going warehouse size on the track's iconic synths and tunnelling basslines instead. Find cool, tropical and percussive touches in "Accordion", with spacious, mellow electro in "Undersea Tea". Cheers!

Review: Techno legend Neil Landstrumm requires no introduction on here, seeing as how he has been present - and largely leading - our charts since we opened shop in the late 90s. He is techno, and techno is him, much like the Detroit or Chicago greats that we all know and love so much. We're glad to see him on Unknown To The Unknown, DJ Haus' imprint, up in the wax with his predictably oddball strain of techno, first launching an off-kilter attack with "DX Madness", before heading into deeper, darker and more subtle territories via "Rectorate Power". "Sleep" and "Grape" both feature Brain Rays, with both tracks possessing a much more sparse, 12-bit sound that verges onto vintage electronica. Landstrumm gear.

Played by: Joyce Muniz
Review: Neil Landstrumm has enjoyed something of a career revival of late, with killer EPs on Central Processing Unit, Running Back and Unknown to the Unknown re-asserting his long-held dancefloor credentials. Naturally, there's plenty more retro-futurist club fodder to be found on the Scottish producer's latest EP, which - as per usual - contains numerous sonic references to turn-of-the-90s bleep and bass. The standout cut is undoubtedly Si Begg hook-up "Hell Is Other People", a fiendishly raw, bass-heavy chunk of techno/electro fusion full of analogue intensity, weirdo robot vocals and Yorkshire style bleeps. He continues on a similarly sparse but weighty theme on "Aviemore", before wrapping a sleazy, Belgian style techno groove with spooky electronics on mind-altering closing cut "Jackshit".

Review: Unknown To The Unknown presenting Naone with her debut release! It follows up her recent collaborative EP Separate Ways with Timothee Victorri's S.O.N.S project which allows the artist to spread a healthy dose of new age electro and bleep to progressive trance, techno and downtempo across four tracks. The best examples of this come through "Space Duck" and the '80s-esque "X-TDB133" with its subtle acid line next to the more overt "Center Creek" and epic title track. Delivering a record full of emotive content spoken through a subtext of old school machines and electro, Bliss Inc goes semi-industrial semi-balearic is its remix to Falling Sun. Out now!
