Review: Viper have been smashing things over on the dancefloor side of the scene for decades and a big part of that is their yearly annual, a compilation which celebrates some of the best releases from the year. One of the best pics of the annual without a doubt is the Annix remix of Pulsation by Mefjus & Insideinfo, a big task for the duo to take on considering how relentlessly classic the original is. But Annix have smashed it with their drawn-out and suspenseful jump uptake, one which sucks all the air out of the room and then releases it as a smorgasbord of warped out energy and choppy force. There are tonnes of other great picks here too, including from new blood Millbrook and others.

Review: 2019 has been another exceptional year for drum & bass albums and Dossa & Locuzzed's three-years-in-the-making debut is a great example of this. One of Viper's most diverse and full spectrum spanning acts right now, their style and skills are showcased in glorious technicolour over 14 tracks. From the silky synths and soulful vocals of the opener "Blinded" to the immense warmth and funk of the closing finale "Sandbox", the album leaves no sonic stone unturned as the Austrian duo really dig deep into their sound and influences. Highlights include the already massive bassline thumper "Get Nasty", the big disco walloper "Tha Bird" (with the one and only DK Marky) and the wriggling futuristic groove workout "Brainfunk"... And that's just the tip of the iceberg. Don't sleep on this, it's the sound of Dossa & Locuzzed maturing from bangersmiths to full album artists, and they're doing it in style!

Review: Murdock is no stranger to releasing music, but this is his first full long player and boy, he's done a good job of it. Rolling out on Viper Recordings, Stronger is an incredibly diverse bit of work that shimmers from jungle, into dancefloor and over into liquid with relative ease, an impressive feat for any producer. 'Breathe' feautirng Goldi Phone Home is a gorgeous roller that packs an equally sweet bouncing, bubbly bassline, one that flows and moves underneath the skipping drums and lovely vocal work. There's wicked jungle on 'Different Way', big synthy sounds on 'All Day All Night' and a bunch more. What a release!

Review: Jack Mirror is a relatively unknown talent but considering both the fact that Viper have picked him up and how absolutely fat this release is, it's clear that a lack notoriety doesn't even come close to dampening what is an absolutely top-notch single. 'This Lie' features Voicians and smacks of Sub Focus or someone similar, with a big synth line that carries all the energy through the track. 'Pressure' is the dancefloor number of the two, with a huge, expansive bassline that seemingly encompasses the entire tune, spinning on its heels and effortlessly flowing from low to high. Big, big single.

Review: Whistle crew! Horn crew! Stamina crew! Insomniax's Freshold continues his heartfelt homage to the Sanctuary with the second part of this authentic foundation celebration. "How Does This Feel" is the pure essence of rave, kicking us off on a true early 90s tip with detuned synths and a hook that nods its cap to the Prodigy and Orbital. "London Soul" flips the focus to a more formative time in drum & bass and the influence of Good Looking. Done from the heart and hitting with 2019 production values, Freshold is killing it with these Saxon Street EPs.

Review: Depdening on who you ask, they might say that Viper Recordings isn't the dancefloor behemoth that it used to be. Judging on this single from Millbrook, however, they'd be wrong, because in only his second release he's dropped two absolute percy tunes, proper dancefloor tracks but ones that don't succumb to cheesiness or over-saturation. 'Rituals' is the better of the two, a harsh-edged futuristic roller that pitches up and down with effortless satisfaction. 'Beyond' ropes in Disprove and Ordure for a heavier, glitched out experience in low-frequency pressure, with a stonking drum line and synth lines that are actually quite bloody scary. Yes Millbrook!

Review: Dossa & Locuzzed are the funk duo from Austria and if you've ever caught their 'Funky Fridays' podcast series, you'll know that these two don't mess about when it comes to funkiness. Their talent comes in an ability to synthesise the original funk sound with the synth-based badassery of 21st Century D&B, an ability that's on full display here. 'Off Course' is the highlight, a movement-packed and deeply energetic number which cleverly uses space to inject a serious amount of funk into the arrangement. The flip is similar but darker, with a more full-throttled approach to getting people moving.

Paying homage to the UK's most famous and influential rave den The Sanctuary, "One More Time" is a turbine blast to the past with a heavy droning Moving Fusion style bassline while "Origin" takes us even deeper down the jungle rabbit hole. Review: Viper Recordings have been and continue to be one of the premier destinations for dancefloor-focused D&B, with a wide-ranging roster and serious backing in the form of Matrix & Futurebound. Their latest single is from a brand new artist and Jack Mirror proves himself on this one, with two cuts that radiate quality as much as they sound wicked. 'Reset' is the slower and steppier of the two, a synth-based loper that proceeds with caution but still packs a carefree vibe. The flip is the roller, the dancefloor number and this one is all about the synths: big, Dimension-esque and full of energy. Big single from the new kid on the block.

Review: Viper Recordings is one of the premium destinations for dancefloor D&B and whilst its perhaps doesn't fit onto the current trend of minimal sophistication, there's no doubt that a large portion of the scene still love their music hard-hitting and full of synth-based extremism. Giganti is holding up that baton this week and he's doing it in style with a two-part single of fiery proportions. 'Rico Law' is certainly the stand-out of the two, its steppy rhythm reminiscent of Dimension's 'UK' and other similar cuts, a type of hard-hitting percussive construction which always sounds so, so weighty through a sound-system. Wicked single.

Review: Dossa & Locuzzed are an Austrian talent who emerged a couple years back with their trademark combination of funked-up synth sounds and devastating bass riffs. Their music is grounded in melodies yet packs a naughty dancefloor edge and this is clear from this single, coming out on their home label of Viper Recordings. 'C'mon Feet' opens with that same melodic style yet devolves into a fiery punch of rolling basses and jazzy sample flicks, its aggressiveness offset by a smoother side. The VIP of 'Love Blind' featuring BMotion is cut from a similar cloth, chopped up vocals and a soothing mix of synths in the intro but bassline nastiness on the drop, this time more in-line with Viper dancefloor tradition yet not less aggressive for it. Top stuff.
