Review: Viper Recordings is one of the premium destinations for dancefloor D&B and whilst its perhaps doesn't fit onto the current trend of minimal sophistication, there's no doubt that a large portion of the scene still love their music hard-hitting and full of synth-based extremism. Giganti is holding up that baton this week and he's doing it in style with a two-part single of fiery proportions. 'Rico Law' is certainly the stand-out of the two, its steppy rhythm reminiscent of Dimension's 'UK' and other similar cuts, a type of hard-hitting percussive construction which always sounds so, so weighty through a sound-system. Wicked single.

Review: With a discography that stretches from Rottun to Disney, US bass merchant AU5 peddles an exciting range of melodic low-end mischief. Coated in huge washes of euphoria, "Crystal Mathematics" is instant 'lighters up' material with all manner of cosmic, dreamy trills and flourishes. "The Reason II" combines deeper, spine-chilling pads and an eerier atmosphere over one of the ugliest basslines Viper have ever released. AU5's message is crystal clear right now.

Review: Aussie bass herbert Shockone has always been pretty forthright with his angular, spiky sonic science but here we find him delving a little deeper with this 14 track concept album. Still maintaining the savage tonk we know and love him for (the tried and tested mosh anthem "Chaos Theory" and the arm-raising "Age Of Enlightement") but there's some really interesting departures found lurking in the space investigating mix such as psychedelic Justice-style electro drama ("Big Bounce") full strength MC-led Pendulumism ("Lazerbeam") and trembling, glo-stick munch anthemia ("Universus"). Bangers and brain-ticklers; this is a really interesting debut album.

Review: Wales national BMotion has upped his game with "Bear Hug". Tearing things up from the off, it's a brutal assault from all directions, from the onwards push of the relentless bassline to the retro synths coming in equal measures melodic and murderous. And if that wasn't enough, "Vice City" doesn't disappoint those with visions of '80s hat-tips, thanks to the neon bass and snug level of warmth in the mix. Consider the gap in the market for danceable tracks officially filled.

Review: Is there ever a reason to doubt The Prototypes? The kings of floor filling d&b return with the anthemic "Don't Let Me Go", a tune so euphoric it deserves to be played loud and danced to with serious dedication. After the upbeat love-in of the first track then, take a minute to recharge with the dark and dirty "Humanoid", a rampant explosion of cinematic vocal samples and sci-fi soundtracking. Next comes three remixes of the title track starting with a chilled-out house re-fix by Jade Blue and then followed up by a Jade Blue piano remix. Adding funk and a bit of sexy slowness was a fantastic idea, taking it up to a sparklingly fresh big top remix for track five was an even better one. Sped up, slowed down, funked up, stripped back, either way, we love.

Review: What did you expect from The Prototypes? "Pop It Off" is a frantic, dancefloor crazed anthem for the people of the night and Mad Hed City's vocals dutty up those techy sounds enough to give the track a grimy vibe. Ripping up the thick floor of drum and bass breaks from under it, Jaded takes the track apart for his remix, choosing a minimal dancefloor house style. Muchos bounce.

Review: Long revered as one of the oddballs of the scene, Inside:Info has repeatedly relished the opportunity to get truly down and dirty with his spliced and diced creations. "Mushroom" though, is something else. Ripped to pieces and stitched back together by the barest vibrophone sample and a chilling sustained synth, it's heavy, then softly-softly and completely mental in equal measure. "The Plains" offers a refreshing look at Paul's incomparable ear for a delicate hook. Softer and sweeter but no less instantly arresting, the sharpness and clarity of his production shines through on the huge drums and wavering bassline. It's so different, which is exactly why you need it.

Review: Crystalline sonic euphoria Koven continue to fly the flag for emotional electronic music with this stunning string-drenched roller. Folly Rae's vocals are delivered with emphatic authenticity while the organic beats sway with a soft militancy. Instant end-of-night hug sessions abound. For a sense of peaktime activity head for The Prototypes' remix: turbo-charged D&B that retains every ounce of the original's heartfelt beauty. Or flip for Habstrakt's remix: rugged drumstep-influenced dubstep where the emotion is galvanised by cutlass-like mid-range bass stabs. Powerful stuff. If you're going to listen to one new track this week, make it "Make It There".

Review: Taken from his debut LP Leap of Faith which is due to drop later this year, Smooth continues his raging storm of furious drum & bass pain on dancefloors around the world with "Drone". Ramping up the neuro pressure with severe jump-up beats for good measure, both the title track and "Kronos" featuring Markoman make for some serious new year speaker smashing. You might be too skint to leave the house this month, but with tunes like this at your disposal, you won't need to. What a blinder.

Review: Fresh from signing to Viper, Mob Tactics get their gully gospel on with this rampant, electrified roller. Gutsy vocals, gutter bass; there's a lot of this type of drum & bass around right now (cheers Sigma and Fresh) but few cuts maintain such a tight balance of airwaves and underground soundwaves. "Return Of The Snitch", meanwhile, is Mob Tactics going back to their roots with a straight-up filth flinger. Stuttering, shifting, snarling; if you're not pulling nasty bass faces to this, you're technically dead.
