Review: Bristol's Vulcan Audio has been known to release some rather tasty dubstep concoctions - never afraid to go that one toke over the line and deeper into the quagmire of low end bass. Their latest release comes from the D Operation Drop crew, and it's no surprise that it's a pure half-step monster of an EP. "Slammer" sets the tone of what's to come with almighty fury, bringing out the drops early, with "The Addition" sounding like its angrier, more aggressive spawn. "Confused", as the name suggests, is a twisted mass of percussion and mutant bass swirls, and "Trench" ties things up with a final stroke of fury. Let's not forget Sparxy's refix of "Slammer", though - it's a beast. Big up.
Review: Bristol-based Boofy updates his deep portfolio with this tight-knit trio of reflective romps. Each cut designed to tickle your innermost mind, the Boofster sure knows how to strike the balance of emotion and weight in his compositions. The title track owes its prominence to the staccato kick drum rhythm that maintains the energy as the pads and stabs fire blindly into the abyss. "Tempus" is a more melancholic affair as it writhes and wriggles on a halfstep amidst all manner of gurgles and groans. Gutcha finishes the set with a remix of "Momentum". Isolating Boofy's ace kick drum work, he goes ahead and doubles them up to create a more pummelling tribal concoction.
Review: With a title like "Nightmares" this review is dangerously close to stating the bleeding obvious. There's no light at the end of the tunnel. There's no euphoric rush. Or funky-assed synth boogie. And that's exactly how C&K like it. Clearly influenced by the darker, looping, DMZ or Appleblim schools, both "Nightmares" and its bedfellow "Subway" are creepy, skanking and deep dark percussive workouts. "Subway" is a little lighter thanks to higher tones on the dub echoes but with that ghostly vocal sample wafting away in the background, the darkness is never more than two rim shots away.
