Higher Palms (Young Montana? remix) - (5:06) Biggest-selling track on this release
from $1.97
Review: Hailing from Brooklyn, My Best Fiend aren't the first New York band to sig to esteemed label Warp - their friends The Hundred In The Hands are the most recent - but they do inhabit a hazy, dreamlike world of their own. "Higher Palms" serves as a taster for their forthcoming album. The track has echoes of US folk and country, but set in the kind of twilight gothic space the Cocteau Twins inhabit, with the scale of classic shoegaze. A remix is provided by highly touted beatsmith Young Montana, who transforms the track into a spiralling combination of Boards of Canada style melodies and beats that wouldn't be out of place on a Brainfeeder record.

Review: Previous remixes in the Nightmares on Wax 25th anniversary series - from the likes of Special Request and JD Twitch - have been fairly reverential, sticking to the sweaty spirit and sub-bothering bleep techno feel of the original material. Here, Ricardo Villalobos and Max Loderbauer take the opposite approach, turning in radical revisions that recast "Aftermath" as a minimal techno after-party anthem. There's very little of the original present, though what is used - most notably the vocal, cut-up and reversed, plus a few notes here and there - is brilliantly woven into the fabric of their wonky, 18-minute Dub. Adventurous DJs should check the thrillingly odd Electric Jazz Version, which re-animates the track as a quirky tech-jazz wig-out of epic proportions.

Review: Nightmares on Wax main man George Evelyn cut his teeth at soul and funk all-dayers in the 1980s - he was a teenage breakdancer - before falling in love with house and techno. Both of these aspects of his heritage are reflected on Ground Floor, which he's trailed as an attempt to go back to his roots. The EP opens with the stretched-out, soulful deep house of "World Inside", which not only boasts a wonderful vocal from Andrew Ashong, but also snappy, dub-influenced rhythm patterns reminiscent of some of his early bleep productions. That aspect of his career is also referenced on "Reclaim The Balcony", a breakbeat-driven house bumper that boasts some seriously heavy sub, and electro-tinged wobbler "Dirty Triumphant", which was co-produced by Acid Mondays.

Review: As exciting the news about Warp's signature of Nozinja was, the now-standard drip feed campaign that's accompanied it will most likely have vexed those out there that just want to buy some wax man! So the label's exact plans with the Shangaan Electro artist may still be under wraps, but Warp have offered a glimpse into the future with this sublime debut. Fans of the Honest Jon's compilation Shangaan Electro won't really need any additional persuasion but if you are not familiar with the hi tempo brand of lo-fi South African dance music Tsekeleke offers a perfect introduction to the sound. Our tip is the haywire vocal mix on the flip. More please Warp!

Review: Having firmly established himself as one of the foremost experimental producers of the past decade with albums like Replica, Returnal, and Rifts, Daniel Lopatin here makes the logical move to electronic music bastion Warp Records. On first listen R Plus Seven is quite unlike any of his other records, largely eschewing the arpeggiated drones of his early work and sample-based collages of his last album for something much more vivid. Coming across like a combination of the emotive minimalism of Terry Riley and Steve Reich, and the hyperreality of James Ferraro's Far Side Virtual, R Plus Seven nevertheless stakes its own claim in the world of post-everything electronic music, combining delicate, introspective moods with shocking moments of recognisable sonic signification. Quite possibly Lopatin's best album to date.

Review: Oneohtrix Point Never's upcoming album, Good Time, has the capacity to turn our entire Download Team into a bunch of zombies. By that, we mean that we probably won't be doing much work when it finally drops next month; this single, "Leaving The Park", is already keeping one or two of us glued onto our speakers like moths to the light. Out through Warp, whom OPN seems to be collaborating with extensively, the tune is much denser than some fo the producer's previous works, heading down new age territories thanks to its vast, bottomless landscape of synths. With barely any beats to carry it, OPN manages to make the track into a delightful groove of ambient euphoria for the open-minded. Lovely, as always. Stay away from the light...

Review: NYC sound artist and Software label boss Daniel Lopatin is back with his eagerly awaited eighth studio album. A self-proclaimed 'cybernetic rock' album influenced by his time touring with Nine Inch nails and Soundgarden in 2014. There's '"Ezra" which reaches near trance moments, the glitchy R&B digitalism of "Sticky Drama" which features a turn, mid track, reaching a level of mayhem comparable to Shapednoise. There is a moment of what we can only describe as 'indie trance' on the psychotic epic "Mutant Standard". Not forgetting the disturbed nu-gaze of "I Bite Through It", a real highlight on here. Commercial music was said to have influenced the album too. "Freaky Eyes" and "Lift" deconstruct pop music via sampling/resampling and loop points, adding Lopatin's own bizarre intricacies on top. He has undoubtedly become known as one of the most unique voices in electronic music today and this is further testament to his standing. Difficult listening for curious ears.

Review: Following on from appearances on Kaleidoscope and No Pain In Pop, patten makes his way onto Warp with his stubborn brand of fractured collage music, revelling in drunken rhythm and delirious sample placement to create a hypnagogic long player rich with homespun charm. There is a consistent distance to the way patten places his sounds, whether it be a heavily treated horn or a scuffed drum hit, with everything dangling just out of reach, not least on borderline-beatless moment "Here Always". There are more tangible incidents as well, such as the gentle whir of "Drift" with its nudging bass tones, but by and large this is an album to get cast asunder by, and it does that casting very well indeed.

Review: London-based electronic duo Patten released their second album for Warp in 2016 entitled ? which served up some interesting takes on the modern electro sound. Taken from the same album is the track "Sonne" which in its original format was fierce and full frontal with its precision beats plus restrained bass pulsations. However, the Hotflush affiliated Travis Stewart aka Machinedrum delivers a much more splintered and angular take on the track here, which will have you equally impressed.

Review: Following two releases on Kaleidoscope and the GLAQJO XAACSSO LP for the No Pain In Pop label, Patten's production credentials have now been certified with a debut on Warp Records. Five of the six tracks on Eolian Instate sound like they've been made inside an old washing machine set to spin cycle that's been thrown off a cliff. From "Aviary" to "Obsidan Alms (Mid-Saccada)" bumping syncopated pulses of low end cushion the roaring clamour of noise and hiss that define this EP, in parts sounding like the disjointed hip hop of Flying Lotus paired with eroded snippets of Onra's Chinoiseries Pt 2. There are some calmer moments however, like "Towards Infinite Shores", takes a similar approach to the productions of Huerco S, while "Sixth Sense", although frenetic, is deep and melodic.

Review: UK duo Patten are responsible for some of the most most groundbreaking IDM we have heard in recent times and the last several releases they've given us on Warp have been nothing short of amazing. For their latest offering entitled "Requiem", be prepared for yet more highly sophisticated sonic warfare, starting off with the brooding and mangled epic "Amulet" before the contorted and breakneck jitter of "Zoning" gives you a good slap about the head. Finally on "Rails" and "Swarm" they serves up some deep industrial beats that'll be perfect for a modern horror film soundtrack.. or a lonely early morning pursuit by a stalker down the back streets of EC1.

Review: The UK's Patten duo have already appeared on London's timeless Warp stable, but this latest album truly feels like their most accomplished work to date. That's because this particular style of experimentalism is full of direction, nothing is used for the sake of it, and all their sounds are perfectly balanced with another. It almost feels like a mathematical ride through the deepest, most convoluted corners of UK bass music, an aspect of these tunes that we love. Moreover, they make total sense as one whole unit of sound and, rather than being disparate slices of leftfield, they move and evolve with each other for the whole duration of the album. We won't go into details because this is music to be interpreted freely, much like the majority of this label's never-ending pit of goodness. Recommended.

Review: Plaid duo Andy Turner and Ed Handley have been active since the late '80s and are as synonymous with Warp Records as Autechre or Nightmares On Wax. Plaid have few rivals when it comes to mixing choppy electronics with intricate melodies, an approach that seems as fresh and rewarding as ever on Reachy Prints, a tenth album of a celebrated recording career. According to Warp, the nine tracks here find Handley and Turner opening the listener up to the possibility of a sonic "journey into a subterranean world" and you might view such press release speak with a pinch of salt, but tracks such as "Hawkmoth" and "Slam" feel like vintage Plaid.

Review: Hot on the heels of Plaid's recent Digging Remedy album comes this new EP. "Ooyu" sounds like a big band sucked down an IDM wormhole with horns, woodwind and keys lit up by electronic melodies. "Rab" and "Odica" come closer to the typical Plaid sound; the former is a jittery, rattling rhythm underscored by gentle off-beats and chopped up melodies, while the latter is an abstract workout, populated by buzzing tones. The only track that sees the UK pair flirt with convention is the deep techno of "Elevator". Supported by a soaring bass, its intricately woven web of chiming melodies would put Efdemin to shame.

Review: Despite now being 25 years into their career, Plaid duo Ed Handley and Andy Turner show no signs of showing up. If The Digging Remedy - their 11th studio set - is anything to go by, their instincts remain as sharp as ever. They've always been capable of creating magical music that contrasts experimental electronic rhythms with picturesque melodies and mood-enhancing sounds, and The Digging Remedy is full of the stuff. Intriguingly, many of the tracks seem deeper and more subdued than previous explorations, with clear ambient and neo-classical influences amongst the classic electro and IDM flavours you'll find on the album's more up-tempo moments.
