Review: Danny "Moodymanc" Ward is known for Balaphonic and Vault amongst others and of course as a part of 2020 soundsystem with good pal Ralph Lawson until they called it quits a few years ago. He revisits his Dubble D alias up next on his Well Cut label delivering three equally epic cuts in the process. Starting off with the lush deep house late night jam "Well Oh", next up "Black 'N Gold" goes for a more soulful and jazzy and slightly disco vibe that had us reminiscing of early Boo Williams and Glenn Underground. Adding some real variety to the release is final track "Grande Piazza" which shows ward has an equally deft hand at creating some smooth nu-disco flavoured grooves and this one features some gorgeously shimmering synth work.
Review: Well Cut Records is Danny Ward (Dubble D/Moodymanc)'s record label, set up to release his own projects and collaborations. This is the second EP for Balaphonic entitled Balinese Saints, a project fusing live musicianship and performance with a heavy nod to the dancefloor. A latin and bossa influenced serving of nu jazz/house here, that calls to mind the work of Phil Asher or Da Lata in the late nineties: very sultry for hot summer nights. The tropical vibe is evident on next offering "Monday" this is exactly the kind of lo-slung nu-disco that floats our boat. Finally, things get really deep on "Sunflowers In Dub" which is rather reminiscent of Ward's usual work, where an immersive slo-mo groove gets all esoteric on you, assisted by those woozy harmonics and plonky hypnotic percussion.
Review: Well Cut Records return with another deluxe release with Dubble D presenting under his "Moodymanc" monniker. He opens with "Comfort Me", a deep and gritty sounding soulful jam, followed by a 're-touch' of "War and Peace", a deep and dirty disco dance floor monster which has done serious damage in the past. Luke Solomun continues with his "Love and Death re-make", toughening up the drums and adding some analogue twists to take the energy levels up to the point of frenzy! The record closes with "Hashtag", a no nonsense, tough Chicago inspired groove which plays backdrop to a conversation between Snoop Dog and G Unit about the music game today which we thought said a lot about the state of play in House music today! A "beatapella" is an addition to the digital version of the release for those DJs who want to get more creative with the message!
Review: Before making his name as a house producer under the Moodymanc alias, Danny 'Dubble D' Ward eked out a career as a jazz drummer for hire. Here, he cannily combines jazz and deep house on an EP created with the assistance of a battery of musician friends. Live instrumentation - pianos, double bass, and his own impeccable percussion work - is expertly fused with hypnotic drum machine beats and classic house vocal samples on "Gone", while the brilliant "Stunt" recalls the glory days of Ludovic Navarre's St Germain project. Best of all, though, is the groovy and bumpin' "Cherries", which boasts some seriously good trumpet work. That comes to the fore on the accompanying "Trumpet Strip Dub" of the same track.
Review: Manchester's finest presents us with another great slice of deep house music on Well Cut. Danny Ward aka drummer and producer Dubble D and also known as Moodymanc here. "Comfort Me" is the typical groove of Ward that you'd expect with a razor sharp bassline, dreamy chords and a lot of soul! "War & Peace (2015 Retouch)" gets funky in a filtered disco kind of way while the Luke Solomon remix is something to look forward to as well. He takes things a bit deeper on this version with a nice splash of 303 acid; it always works well!
Review: The second release for Danny Ward's Well Cut Records comes from Balaphonic, a project which fusing organic live instrumentation with deep and modal dancefloor sensibilities. "Adventures in Lagos" is an evolving and hypnotic build of afro grooves featuring spoken word samples of Fela Kuti and street sounds taken from 1970s Lagos. "Three Strikes and Out" is 120BPM percusive bumper while "Disorganics" is a nod toward the great Brazillian recordings of the 1960s and '70s made with the dancefloor in mind; live samba percussion, strings guitar and a driving double bass the track's focal point. "Silver Lining" closes the EP and is a tribute to the great jazz musician and musical visionary Horace Silver. Ride cymbals abound, the earthy house drums propel a modal grand piano and double bass riff to build in tension which evolves with the help of an ever expanding synth line, keeping energies high whilst percussion and string parts develop to great effect!
Review: Well Cut Records is the new label project from Danny Ward, known mainly for his releases and productions as Moodymanc, Dubble D and as part of 2020Soundsystem. The label aims to be a showcase for various production projects and collaborations from Danny and to live up to its moniker by releasing records that will appeal to more discerning record buyers and DJs by staying true to the roots and aesthetics ofhHouse music whilst exploring its many shades and colours! This debut release perfectly captures the Well Cut approach, pairing two Moodymanc productions with collaborations between Ward and newcomer Lenny Middles.
