Review: From the moment the smooth, slo-mo soul feels of "Push On" ease their way into your ears you know Cheshire's third album Smokescreens & Somersaults is something special. Easing back off the bangs and focusing more on the space between, the longstanding Aussie funker has really found his groove as we're massaged by horns and pepped by the final parps on "Bounce", our snakes are charmed by wah wahs on "Hypnotic" before building up to chunkier bangers like the sleazy glitch lizard "Subaquatic" and the show-stopping future glitch space anthem "Smokescreens & Somersaults". No smokescreen necessary... But somersaults are pretty much guaranteed.
Review: Vancouver's The Funk Hunters aim to 'put the soul back into electronic dance music'. Recently they teamed up with Most recently they collaborated with MC Chali 2na of Jurassic 5 (they've toured together for years and he calls them "the selectah's of the century!") for the ILLectric EP. Now the tracks featured on it are all getting the remix treatment. This week it's the turn of Funk Back where labelmate Shylow adds tougher beats and extra bounce, whilst Freddy Todd's delivers his trademark chopped up everything and the kitchen sink vibes.
Review: Canadian label Westwood was formed by Nick Middleton with the sole purpose of keeping the funk alive. He's done a good job so far too, none more so than with new signing SugarBeats. This Oregon duo have been preaching a similar vision for years and it's no wonder that Middleton picked up on them. They recently dropped their debut album, Fly High, on Westwood to great acclaim. Now we get a different take on the LP - a purely instrumental version that allows the music to breathe over the course of these nine tracks of funk, hip-hop, glitch, and future bass.
