Review: With Christmas party season in full swing, Joey Negro has decided to reissue a couple of classic jams from his disco/boogie/jazz-funk revival project, The Sunburst Band. Both "Here Comes The Sunburst Band" and "U Make Me Hot" were featured on the expansive live outfit's 1998 debut album, and one of the contained remixes of the latter track - by long-serving smooth groover Yam Who - first saw the light of day on vinyl in 2004. The other remixes, though, are brand new. Fouk turns "Here Comes The Sunburst Band" into a spiraling, toughened-up disco-house smasher, before jazz-leaning producer Daniel Producer delivers vocal and instrumental versions of "U Make Me Hot" that sit somewhere between smooth hip-hop soul and vintage Herbie Hancock.

Review: Culled from their recent LP, Superconductor, Opolopo's "Candy Coated Perfection" has now been given an extra lease of life through a whole host of new mixes. They're nearly all by Prezzner, mind, but he's a really good remixer so it's all good. His Solar Dub may eschew the original's honeyed vocals but it's a killer slice of spacey leftfield disco. Elsewhere his Swingset mix appears to sample the sound of tennis racquets in a sleek, linear jack-a-thon, and the DeejayKul Meets Soultechnic rework of "The Best' is a delicious slice of deep n' jazzy soulful house.

Review: Hailing from Wales, but Bristol-based and with his heart even further afield, Sean McCabe is a strong UK presence on the international soulful house circuit thanks to album, It's Time. "Everything's Alright" was on that LP and it now gets a variety of remix treatments; Art Of Tones opts for breezy, melodic production, complete with New York organ riffs and hints of gospel. Elsewhere McCabe delivers his own dub version which is much more clubbier and boasts a slight speed garage edge. Also included is the ponderous "Love For Life" which is presented in two deeper forms by John Morales.

Review: Given Opolopo's impressive track record over the last decade check his releases on Especial Records, Local Talk, Swedish Brandy and Sick Trumpet for proof. You'd expect this outing on Z Records to be rather tasty and of course it is, with Colonel Red collaboration "The Best" delivering a killer chunk of house-tinged contemporary electrofunk. Full of vintage-sounding synths, classic percussion touches, clipped guitars and wonderful vocals, it's a soulful delight. "Get On Up" is almost as good, offering up a breezy blend of piano house, undulating synth bass and late '80s US garage flourishes. It's the sound of summer - for those enjoy their music warm, positive, synth-heavy and soulful, at least.

Review: To coincide with Z Records' 30th birthday, boss man Dave Lee AKA Joey Negro has been sourcing new remixes of classic back catalogue cuts. Here he showcases the latest, which sees Tropical Disco label mainstay Moodena work his magic on the Sunburst Band's "Big Blow", a track first featured on the Lee-helmed combo's 1998 debut album. Moodena makes the most of the original track's low-down disco-funk feel, looping up the original groove, underpinning it with bouncy new house drums and making the most of Lee and company's brilliant instrumentation (think wah-wah guitar snippets, addictive horn blasts, rich electric piano keys and rubbery bass guitar). It's the kind of rolling, rock-solid revision that sounds like it will cause dancefloor devastation every time it's played.

Review: Released last June, Opolopo's Superconductor LP, is the gift that keeps on giving. We've had a string of album tracks remixed ever since and here is the latest batch. First up Nachtbreaker tackles Feels Good 2 Me, delivering a muscular, celebratory house workout in the process. The euphoria escalates on Rhemi's rework of "Spare Me The Details" - all jazzy synths and sing-along vocals. There's even an instrumental in case the latter proves a bit too much for those who don't like to be distracted from the groove.

Review: It wouldn't be summer without every house label under the sun releasing an Ibiza-themed compilation. To be fair to Dave Lee's long-running Z Records imprint, they've been delivering White Isle-themed collections every summer for many years. Given that their sound - a blend of funk-fuelled grooves, soulful house, tech-tinged anthems, disco re-edits, boogie revivalism and classic US garage influences - is well suited to sun-drenched alfresco parties, it's little surprise to find that Z Records Presents Ibiza 2015 is rather good. While much of the standout material comes from Lee himself under a variety of guises (check, in particular, the Doug Willis jam "Crystal Lover"), there are also top-notch cuts from Sean McCabe, Opolopo and Fibre Foundation, whose cover of disco/boogie classic "Weekend" is simply superb.

Review: In recent years, Dave Lee seems to have been concentrating on remixes, compilations and side projects. As a result, "I Can Hear Your Body Rock" is, somewhat surprisingly, the first original Joey Negro single for two years. As you might expect, it's a deliciously summery affair that effortlessly joins the dots between piano house, early '90s US garage and '80s boogie. Lee concentrates on the latter on the alternative Serious Mix, which pleasingly sits somewhere between the delay-laden proto-house of Paul Simpson's Serious Intention project, and breezy early '90s house. For those who just want more pianos, Lee also obliges with the sumptuous "Pianohead Dub".

Review: Notorious sample magpie and veteran housemaster Joey Negro returns with another instalment of the old skool flavoured Surround Sounds project. The EP opens with a suitably slinky deep house rub from the always reliable Session Victim, before heading towards freestyle/synth disco/early NY house pastures with a remix from Kola Kube themselves. While a touch cheesy round the edges (anything that apes freestyle usually is - roll with it), the NY House Mix boasts a suitably solid bottom-end and some nice dubbed-out touches. That just leaves two versions of the Special Dubb (vocal and instrumental), which hover between sun-soaked beach house, sparkling freestyle and retro synth disco.

Review: Graeme Clark is best known for his edits - his reworks of Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye (in The Revenge and 6th Borough Project mode respectively) linger long in the memory - and here he serves up the second round of tweaks that featured on his recent Reekin'structions long player for the Z imprint. Those seeking the trademark deft house touch will delight in Clark's slow build take on of Velvet Hammer's "Party Down" whilst there is added incentive in the shape of a previously unreleased dub version of the same track which is just as good, if not even better! Up next, the Glaswegian showcases his cutting skills with a bumping refix of Sargeant & Malone's "Love Message" and a take on The Joneses "Summer Groove" that works its way from the depths of the machine into a frenzy of drums and funked out guitar riffs with expertise.

Review: Going back to his soulful, disco roots Joey Negro dives into his Doug Willis alias for these beauties, out on Z Records. "Music Speaks Louder Than Words" is a Philly/Salsoul bomb, complete with a huge chorus that could charm even the most gloomy and dour music fan. "Doug Be Good To Me" is another gem, this time channelling boogie basslines of D-Train or The Gap Band, while the new "Dougyoulator" mix of "Activated" fuses Italo sounds with a deepish, dubby vibe for yet another curveball from the multi-monikered master, and that's even before he channels the Bee Gee's and Yellow Magic Orchestra in one blinding stroke! With some producer friendly acapellas also included on the release, this is pure must-have stuff.

Review: Londoner Wipe The Needle (real name Lee Gomez) has previously proved adept at blurring the boundaries between soulful house, broken beat and jazz-funk, an undeniably attractive hybrid sound in keeping with the recent bruk revival. In its' original mix form (track two), 'On Time', his first outing for Z Records, is a brilliant slub of bruk-up boogie-funk smothered in spring-friendly soul - think woozy synths, crunchy broken beats, aqua-funk bass, twinkling jazz pianos and sublime lead vocals from Tornoto's Sacha Williamson. There's a vocal free dub of that take tagged onto the end of the EP, plus two '4x4' house versions: a stunning, EP-opening full vocal version that's simply gorgeous, and a killer, slightly stripped back 'dubstrumental' mix that pushes the killer bassline to the fore.

Review: 'Garden of Love' is now one of the oldest tracks in the bulging back catalogue of Dave Lee's jazz-funk and boogie inspired Sunburst Band outfit. It was first featured on the outfit's debut album Here Comes The Sunburst Band and has been remixed a number of times since. The latest to give the track a good seeing to are Heist Recording chiefs Dam Swindle. Their take is driving but groovy, with the band's original instrumentation - dazzling Rhodes electric piano motifs, jazzy boogie bass, spiralling synth sounds - and vocalisations riding a bumping deep house beat. Lee provides his own re-edit of their remix, chopping it down slightly while alternating between the more euphoric and stripped-back sections of the Dam Swindle interpretation.

He's dived even deeper into his vast record collection on this third volume, serving up a fine array of both classic cuts and sought-after obscurities. There's naturally plenty of Latin jazz on show - the backbone of the jazz-dance scene since the 1970s - but also forays into spiritual jazz, Hammond-heavy dancefloor workouts (see the sweaty 'Yatra Ta' by Martin Johnson), soul-jazz (JuJu), energy-packed percussion jams (GeeW) and Afro-Latin fusion (The Drive).

Review: Joey hinted at the quality of this album three weeks ago with the joyous single "In The Thick Of It"; but we don't think anyone could've predicted just how good the rest of it would be. Brushing on a broader canvas than previous albums, the wide collection of sounds and grooves here are some The Sunnie's best to date. From massive boogie curveballs like the slap-bass, cosmic disco instrumental "Jazz The DMX" to the timeless shimmering funk "My Way" (featuring fellow legend Diane Charlemagne) via straight up string-soaked house "Why Wait For Tomorrow" and myriad instances of criminally sexy P-funk, this album won't be a secret for too long.

Review: Belgian duo Spirit Catcher seem to have been forgotten a bit in the last few years, despite releasing music that's far superior to most nu-disco and boogie-flavoured deep house. In case you'd forgotten, their bright, warm, synth-heavy style - electrofunk goes deep house, if you will - pre-dates the nu-disco explosion. Here they pop up on Dave Lee's Z Records imprint with a trio of cuts that utilize grooves from underground synth-funk classics. The resultant tracks are every bit as fun and well-produced as you'd expect, with the breezy "Rendez Vous" and '80s soul-goes-Tiger & Woods flex of "Absolute Drop" just edging out the BB&Q-sampling "Street Skills".

Review: Go-go has always been one of American dance music's most overlooked genres. Given its roots lie in Washington DC, rather than music metropolises such as New York, Detroit or Chicago, that's perhaps unsurprising. This collection from Joey Negro offers a good starting point for those unfamiliar with the style, showcasing the work of scene stalwarts like Chuck Brown and a string of lesser-known names. It also impressively tracks the development of the sound, from a regional variant of funk to a an electro and hip-hop inspired crossover style in the early 1980s. Even if you've got a passing interest in go-go, it's worth a gander; as usual, Lee has unearthed some brilliant unheralded gems.

Review: Bobby D'Ambrosia and Michelle Weeks' 1997 U.S garage cover of Inner Life disco classic "Moment of My Life" was an enormous club hit in 1997, spawning a swathe of remixes that variously re-cast the track as an early UK garage bumper and a German disco-house stomper. Here Joey Negro finally gets his chance to rework the track and takes it back to the source, re-imagining it as a turn-of-the-'80s disco-boogie cut closer in sound, feel and execution to Inner Life's superb original version. Alongside the sprightly, musically rich vocal version (the "Closer To The Source Take") the Z Records chief has also offered up a killer, NYC 1985 style proto-house dub smothered in echo-laden vocal snippets and wild organ solos.
