Review: TheBasement Discos label has not offered up an explanation for the concept behind this tidy compilation - assuming there is one - but the title suggests that the track-listing consists entirely of previously unreleased cuts from artists they adore (sone label regulars, others imprint debutants). Regardless of the story behind it, 'Fresh Fandango' is packed to the rafters with ear-catching, floor-filling fare. For proof, check the simultaneously funky and deliciously deep 'Smoking' by Melohman, the piano-powered peak-time 1990s house nostalgia of Lost Boys' 'In My House', the St Germain-in-the-sunshine flex of Barron's 'Sunshine', the percussion-rich Latin house joy of Albert Sola's Kid Creole-sampling 'Carnival House' and the kaleidoscopic dancefloor rush of 'Feel You' by Osner.

Review: Following outings on Groove Culture Deep, Dobro and Small Great Things, former Endless Music regular Luca Olivitto returns to theBasement Discos for the first time since 2022. The Berlin-based producer has more than proved his credentials of late, so it's no surprise to find that the two tracks on show are both high-quality. First up is title track 'Deep Waves', a gorgeously warming, tactile and sunny slab of nostalgic Italo-house revivalism piled high with jazzy bass, colourful chords and sparkling piano motifs. On 'Down The Line', Olivotto delivers another musically rich and positive slab of retro-futurist deep house that sounds like a long lost workout from 1992.

Review: There's a hint in the title here, as theBasement Discos serve up a collection of 20 house tracks with the ivories firmly front and centre. But while the old Joanna might be the thread that ties it all together, there's still plenty of variety on offer, from sprightly jazz-house workouts like AFAMoo's 'The Art Of Jazz' to deep house jams like A Naranjo's 'What Lies To Head' and Foot-Loose's 'Weekend'-biting disco-houser 'LA Piano Mood'. It's not all nostalgic homages to the hands-in-the-air anthems of the early 90s, in other words - though naturally there are plenty of those as well, with Piem's '4Real' one clear standout in that department. Of course, if you're not a fan of piano-based house, it's probably not the album for you... otherwise the 'Paradise' part of the title is entirely justified, nuff said!

Review: To kick off 2024, Spanish imprint theBasement Disco has turned to Siggatunez, the Berlin-based DJ/producer behind the 'Gooey Edits' series, as well as original productions on Traxx Underground, Times Are Ruff and Tilly Jam. Title track 'Come Together' is an unashamed, sunrise-ready rush of strings-and-piano-laden deep house-meets-dream house joy, while 'How You Feel' is a sample heavy slab of off-kilter jazz house-meets-breakbeat house. Elsewhere across the EP, 'Decisions' sees him wrap jaunty pianos, sampled bass and eyes-closed jazz-soul vocal snippets around a chunky, bass-heavy house groove, and the 'Hard Drive Library' remix of 'Come Together' is a drowsy, tactile and woozy slice of mid-tempo deep house haziness.

Review: Fabio Tosti brings his TNT, Inc. project to The BasementDiscos for the first time. He's joined by Donald Sheffey, who provides an atmospheric, freewheeling spoken word vocal and occasional sung portions. That hushed and evocative vocal comes to the fore on the EP-opening 'Dry vocal extended mix', with Sheffey rising above bumping house beats, weighty bass, undulating electronic motifs, early morning stabs and heady handy percussion. Elsewhere, the 'Dry dub extended mix' is a more groove-based affair that subtly rises and falls in all the right places, while the 'On The Rocks extended mix' is a gently Latin-tinged deep house re-make that could well be the EP's most impactful moment.
