Review: This year saw Berlin clubbing institution Watergate turn 20 years old. To celebrate the milestone, they took the experience outside the club for a full weekend rave, plus the release of this mammoth 20 track compilation of new and unreleased tracks. Highlights come from legendary artists such as the ever reliable Henrik Schwarz who appears with the highly engineered soul of "You Need Attitude", veteran of the scene Sasha gets a seriously heads-down groove happening on "Wolf Cider", Hamburg maximal heroes Extrawelt deliver as expected on the hypnotising "Rover" and former Mobilee co-head Anja Schneider gets the hands in the air on the uplifting house of "Can't You See Me No More?' plus many others.

Review: For almost a quarter century, Delsin has been putting out some of the world's best electronic music. That situation didn't change in 2023. As this compilation demonstrates, the label still has an unerring knack of releasing music from the more esoteric end of the spectrum. Reedale Rise and VC-118A both deliver atmospheric strains of electro. On "Late Night Kyiv", Yan Cook pushes towards the dance floor to deliver an emotive tribute to his hometown. The compilation also consolidates Delsin's connection to Dutch artists. Steffan Robbers' Terrace project yields the emotive "Model A", while Eevo Lute co-founder Wladimir M drops the understated pulses and mysterious vocals of "Zie Het Onder Ogen / Y Faire Face". And Steve Rachmad shines as always, with the seductive Detroit techno of "Teknitron".

Review: Oderbruch is Rene Pawlowitz's fifth artist album as Shed, and the title refers to the place in east Germany he comes from. It's no surprise then that this long player is a deeply personal affair. "Die Oder", named after the river in that region, flows serenely thanks to a slip-slide rhythm and gentle pads. "Menschen & Mauern" is the polar opposite, with Pawlowitz dropping high-speed break beats and evocative organ playing. A similarly introspective mood plays out on the dusky sound scapes of "Sterbende Alleen", where Pawlowitz's sense of disillusionment is palpable. However, like any personalised work, the mood swings, with the dreamy "Nacht, Fluss, Grille, Auto, Frosch, Eule, Mucke" restoring a sense of calm with its bucolic tones.

Review: After a decade showcasing his wares on Bedrock, Stelios Vassiloudis has transferred to Balance Music. There's a lot to like about 'End Transmission', the Athens-based producer's label debut. In the EP-leading 'Single Version' form, the track is a genuine blast of squint-worthy audible sunshine: a slowly building ambient soundscape where shimmering pads and glistening guitars cluster sparse, laidback beats and warming bass that seemingly build in waves. Vassiloudis rebuilds it for the dancefloor on the 'Dub Variation', re-imagining it as a loopy chunk of weighty soundscape tech-house, but it's John Beltran's 'Sweet Sunny Remix' - a sublime, awe-inspiring ambient take tailor-made for spring runrises - that really sparkles. It's genuinely breath-taking.

Review: On his first new album in three years, Kieron Hebden aka Four Tet proves why he is such a rare talent. Tracks like "School" and "Baby" see him merge ambient and electro-acoustic sounds together with vocal samples and tight dance floor rhythms, while on "Love Birds" he delivers tight drums and melancholic keys. What makes this so impressive is the fact that the dividing line between the organic and the electronic is imperceptible. Of course there is an accessible side to Hebden's style - the effortless warbles of "Teenage Birdsong" and the evocative "Harpsichord" being the stand out tracks - but in the same way that he blends the organic with the synthetic, Four Tet never lets this album dip into rampant commercialism.

Review: If you were judging Kieran Hebden's 11th Four Tet studio album merely on the way it's presented, you'd immediately think he'd spent the last two years immersed in early '90s ambient house albums. While it's unlikely he's done that, it's fair to say that New Energy does owe a debt to classic electronica sets from that period. For all the exotic instrumentation and subtle nods to post-dubstep "aquacrunk" experimentalism and chiming, head-in-the-clouds sunrise house, the album feels like a relic of a lost era. That's not meant as a criticism - New Energy is superb - but it is true that his choice of neo-classical strings, gentle new age melodies, sweeping synthesizer chords and disconnected vocal samples would not sound out of place on a Global Communication album.

Review: Kieran Hebden, better known by his moniker Four Tet, has graced us with his first full-length album in nearly three years. "Three," released on his own Text Records imprint, is a meticulously crafted exploration of sound, weaving together elements of electronica, downtempo, and folktronica influences. The album strikes a balance between organic and electronic textures. Tracks like "Loved" showcase Hebden's signature ability to manipulate found sounds and samples, creating a shimmering sonic tapestry. "Gliding Through Everything" leans more towards the downtempo side, with its gentle piano chords and woozy atmosphere. However, Four Tet doesn't shy away from exploring the electronic realm. Tracks like "Daydream Repeat" feature driving uptempo rhythms intertwined with ethereal piano melodies, showcasing his talent for building tension and release. "Storm Crystals" injects a dose of ambient energy, while "Skater" leans into playful, almost chiptune-like melodies. The closing track, "Three Drums" (another pre-release single), brings back the energy with its pulsating bassline and infectious groove. Not to miss!

Review: Tronik Youth's Nein label bring us the debut EP (we think!) from the mysterious Slum 159, a producer with seemingly no online presence at all. In this case he really can afford to "let the music do the talking", though, because if you're a fan of darker disco styles influenced by EBM and electro you'll find much to enjoy here. 'Decade' itself is a fairly unremarkable throbber with a woodwind-like synth sound taking the lead - From Beyond's beefier remix works better, to these ears. But 'Plastic', with its air of 80s sleaze and menace, is really quite distinctive sounding, and Los Fugazzi's moody, prog-tinged refix is a killer.

Review: Music From Memory's last epic compilation, 2017's Outro Tempo, did a terrific job in uncovering the dusty, rarely visited corners of Brazilian electronic music. Uneven Paths offers a similar service to those interested in the eccentric, often inspired fringes of European pop music. Of course, compilers Jamie Tiller and Raphael Top-Secret are not interested in run-of-the-mill or commercial synth-pop, but rather "deviant pop" - melodious, left-of-centre curiosities that some may describe as "Balearic". This is pop music from the outer limits, where tracks variously draw influence from spoken word, global rhythms, post-punk fusion, jazz, new age ambient and kosmiche. It goes without saying that the crate-digging duo's selections are spot on throughout, with genuine surprises around every corner.
