Review: Since the dawn of the decade, A Winged Victory For The Sullen has delivered occasional albums for Erased Tapes that effortlessly blur the boundaries between ambient, electronic experimentalism and emotion-stirring neo-classical music. "The Undivided Five" marks their first appearance on mighty British independent Ninja Tune, and as a result seems a little more grandiose in scale and ambition than some of their earlier outings. It was recorded in eight different studios around Europe, with the pair combining atmospheric orchestration and traditional instrumentation with occasional glimpses of modular electronics. It feels like a stunning soundtrack to a movie we've not yet seen - unsurprising given that they have previously composed a number of scores - and genuinely gets better with each successive spin.

Review: Brainfeeder bass-botherer Lorn is back with a new EP of fractured damage, this time delivering the business for Ninja Tune across four tracks of adventurous, roaming beats that build upon his previous form and throw some interesting new quirks into the blender. "Inverted" may start on familiar territory with its melodramatic synth lines and snarling bottom end, but the brief diversion into a beat comes offset with a startling live snare over as quickly as it starts. "On The Ice" is a more full-bodied affair, lurching on a spartan half-step march embellished with ominous stabs of cello. "Bury Your Brother" is a decidedly more complex affair, rolling and tumbling with intricate percussion before breaking out into an organ led breather, before "Debris" rounds the EP off with a beatless death knell of gargantuan synths.

Review: On the basis of the material FaltyDL has released with Ninja Tune thus far, his forthcoming third album Hardcourage should rank as one of the more interesting albums to surface in the first quarter of next year. Following the excellent throwback styles of "Hardcourage", the New Yorker showcases his seemingly endless palette of styles with "Straight & Narrow", a wonderfully colourful and vivid sounding production. Dominated by some deft vocal chopping, it's the way these cooing elements intertwine with the beguiling synth noodling and crisp almost handclap style beats that resonates deeply. Ballroom duo Mike Q and Divoli S'vere naturally latch onto the most obvious elements in the vocals and clapped beats, laying them atop a breathlessly frenetic rhythmic mainframe, Four Tet hogs the flip with a dewy eyed, slowly percolating seven minute remix that will tug at the heart strings of his legion of fans, while Gold Panda delivers a typically prismatic reworking that outdoes Hebden's effort in the melody stakes.

Review: Easily the most anticipated album of 2021 so far, legendary UK duo Bicep are lighting it up right now with a second full length album for Ninja Tune. It follows their self-titled debut from 2017 and it sees the pair filling the UK and its neighbouring Europe with hopes, dreams and premonitions of the day we get to go clubbing again. Weaving a new age sound of synths and trance through futuristic beats and drum sequences that take in everything from two-step and house to drum and bass, jungle and techno, Bicep bring the experimentations of eras past to the minds of a mainstream audience to deliver an album that will set fire to the underground as much as it will the dance charts of the new year. Our pick: Sundial.

Review: Although they have plied their trade in many different places over the years, Norwegian jazz mavericks Jaga Jazzist have in many ways always been synonymous with Ninja Tune, not least since The Stix woke the world up to the band back in 2002. After a two year gap since their Live With Britten Sinfonia LP, Lars Horntveth and his merry band of multi-instrumentalists return with a new collection that five sizable pieces. The glittering romanticism and expressive musicality of the Jazzist is still very much present, with the sprawling "Big City Music" displaying a noticeable kosmische leaning in its forthright propulsion. It's an approach that should satisfy long time fans as much as new recruits.

Review: Given his meteoric rise over the past 18 months, it's no surprise to find Seven Davis Jr bringing his hard-to-pigeonhole brand of dancefloor soul to Ninja Tune. "Wild Hearts", his first release for Coldcut's veteran label, finds him in fine form, delivering the sort of dusty, off-kilter, floor-friendly effort that sits somewhere between the soulful, jazz-tinged deepness of Moodymann, the bumpin' swing of Derrick Carter, and the impeccable modern soul of Amp Fiddler or Peven Everett. It's arguably his strongest single for sometime, with the L.A-based producer's vocals riding a thrusting groove (blessed with rubbery jazz bass), warm organ chords and jaunty pianos. We await his LP for Ninja Tune with real interest.

Review: With the success of FKA Twigs and the like, it's easy to dismiss another act pushing an ethereal take on '90s RnB. But Vancouver's Evy Jane have been doing their thing for a while now, and on "Closer" they take the sound to a new level, coming across as late '80s Prince on some seriously mind altering substances. Further on we're taken on an often haunting ("Sosoft") and even perky, tropical dub ("Worry Heart") journey. Next level stuff!

Review: In the period since the release of his late 2012 album Hardcourage, Drew Lustman has founded his own label as well as dropping singles on Swamp81 and Ninja Tune, slipped out the odd remix and kept up a busy touring schedule. Where he managed to fit in the studio time for a fourth album In The Wild is not clear but a new FaltyDL long player will always be welcome. At 17 tracks long, In The Wild is Lustman's most comprehensive display of his production palette by some distance with the Brooklyn based artist using the afforded space to really go deep into his various creative impulses. It's a lot to take in immediately, but tracks such as "Frontin'" and "Ahead The Ship Sleeps" feel like FaltyDL on top form.

Review: It would be fair to called Joined Ends, Oliver Thomas Johnson's second album under his familiar Dorian Concept alias, "long-promised". It was being touted for release back in 2011, soon after he signed with Ninja Tune. Interestingly, it's a very different beast to his 2009 debut album, When Planets Explode, and the club-friendly singles that followed. A veritable technicolour blast of warm chords, shimmering synthesizer melodies, dream-pop vocals and skittering low-end rhythms, Joined Ends ripples with unfussy positivity. It's far from a straightforward set - Johnson is too imaginative a producer for that - but it certainly has a singular vision. It may not be the album we were expecting, but it's an impressive set nonetheless.

Review: Beat Spacek aka Steve Spacek is a man who has seen it all and done it all. Well, not quite all because this latest project is quite possibly his best in recent years. Having worked with artists as diverse as J Dilla and dBridge, his sound is characterised by a hugely varied conglomeration of styles and influences, but also methods. For instance, we've been told that this LP is made up exclusively of sounds generated from iPhone and iPad apps, so it's easy to see the man's versatility and openness to new sonic territories. "Modern Streets" itself is an intricate cocktail of ideas, incorporating remnants of drum & bass, digital dancehall and curb-side poetry. The whole LP is a daring and successful view into Spacek's multifaceted mind as a musician. Recommended.

Review: With his sizable history on labels like Fat City and Tectonic, Illum Sphere makes the leap to Ninja Tune with this esoteric concoction of slow house thud and starry-eyed melodics. "Sleeprunner" features all of the producer's strongest characteristics, from warm and immersive basslines to emotive strings, but all realised through a decidedly unconventional framework befitting of the reputation he has made for himself. Zed Bias meanwhile creates an equally housey version of the track that lays on some rigid claps, cheeky sub bass and fluttering arpeggios in a distinctly summery style. Clearly feeling doubly inspired from his first go at the track, Illum Sphere comes back around for a "re-run" of "Sleeprunner" that turns the track into a slow-release techno peppered with undulating acid lines and rugged drums.

Review: Man like Drew Lustman returns to Ninja Tune for an excellent slab of forward thinking beat science under his universally acclaimed FaltyDL guise. It's nice to see FaltyDL back on the label after a stint overseeing the rise of his own Blueberry Records operation - expect much more from them in 2014 - and once again Ninja house Lustman's work in the classy throwback original Ninja Tune yellow and black housebag. The title track expertly rolls in the crawlspace between contemporary juke and early millennial broken beat with subtle hints of classic 60s spy cinema. It's complemented well by "King Brute," a collaboration with the superbly named Shanghai Den which spills with creeping atmospherics.

Review: It's been five years since Manchester's Ryan Hunn made his debut under the now familiar Illum Sphere alias. This debut album for scene titans Ninja Tune has been a long time coming. So, is it any good? First and foremost, it's a lot smoother and melodic than his wonkier early work. While there are off-kilter rhythms paired with futuristic electronics (see "It'll Be Over Soon" and string-laden "Ghosts of Then & Now"), these moments largely play second fiddle to woozy, James Blake-ish soundscapes and tactile downtempo moments. It's a curious move, perhaps, but one that suits the album format. Certainly, when he really nails it - such as the distinctly Balearic "One Letter From Death" - it's nothing less than sublime.

Review: The latest release from Illum Sphere on Ninja Tune comes bolstered with so many remixes they actually come in before the original material on the tracklisting. Legowelt leads the charge with a superlative version of "Embryonic" heavy on bleeps and keyboard choir tones, before Lone delivers a sugar-sweet drum & bass interpretation. "Spectre Vex" meanwhile finds Illum Sphere exploring fulsome synth tones with a coldwave leaning, which leads neatly into the JTC and Charles Manier versions of "The Road" with their varied 80s stylings. Let's not overlook the charms of the Zed Bias version of "Sleeprunner" not to mention the other original material on the EP. It's a veritable feast of electronic ideas for those with eclectic palates.

Review: Given that it was her first album for four years, and thus a comeback of sorts, it was something of a surprise to see Kelis' recent LP drop on Ninja Tune. While Food is a fine set, there's little of the frosty, scratchy experimentalism you might expect from such a leftfield hook-up. Step forward Actress, who delivers a brilliantly icy, glacial, sparse and melodic take on recent single "Rumble". Kelis' howling vocal sounds surprisingly good atop Actress's immensely beautiful and melancholic backing track. The heavenly instrumental is included, too, for those moments when Kelis' urgent delivery is just a little too much to handle.

Review: Classically-trained producer Raffertie burst onto the post-dubstep scene in a blaze of glory at the tail end of the noughties with a series of 12" singles that effortlessly joined the dots between bass music, mutant R&B and wonky house. Here, he finally delivers his much-discussed debut album, Sleep of Reason. It's clearly an accurate reflection of where his head's at - the curious basslines, overwhelming atmospheres and cute R&B influences remain - but also far more wide-ranging than his early work. For starters, there are far more songs than we've come to expect, most of which sound like jauntier, more upbeat takes on James Blake. Then there are his occasional forays into dancefloor territory, which - as is the case with simmering techno stomper "Undertow" - bristle with intensity.

Review: Still hot from having "For You" voted as Resident Advisor's Best Track of 2020 (next to Crack Magazine's #2 and Pitchfork's #21), India Jordan breaks through to Ninja Tune following a formative run of EPs and singles via Local Action. Watch Out! sees the London-based artist add a hyped up new burst of uplifting club music to the mix by colliding R&B with house in "And Groove" to jungle and rave cut ups in "Only Said Enough" and the title track. Pumping club beats come from faster tempos in "Feierabend" and the rough and ready, percussion heavy, "You Can't Expect The Cars To Stop If You Haven't Pressed The Button". A hotly tipped artist bursting with euphoria!
