Overcome/Lady Science (NYC Sunrise)
Overcome - (9:01) 125 BPM
Lady Science (NYC Sunrise) - (9:23) 128 BPM Hot
Review: Trelik returns with a reissued edition of one of the catalogue's most treasured releases. "Overcome" and "Lady Science (NYC Sunrise)" need little introduction, and now come sporting the new TR11:11 matrix number. Written and produced by Thomas Melchior and Baby Ford aka Soul Capsule, these tracks came from one of the many sessions recorded at the West London Ifach Studio in 1999. "Overcome" is stripped back and energetic, driven by rolling and shuffling garage style beats, tight bubbling bass and atmospheric synth pads. The intermittent vocal samples and the release's signature organ set you up for the accompanying "Lady Science (NYC Sunrise)". Possibly one of house music's most emotive pieces, the track builds slowly with the introduction of each part building a story of soulful optimism based around a sparse palette of deep synths, uplifting keys and warm analogue bass. The understated beauty of the main vocal riff never seems to grow old or tired with the track lending itself perfectly to either main room, peak-time play or after-hours sessions alike.

Duh Yuh Luv Meh - (5:49) 129 BPM
She Make Me Feel (Like I Never Sinned) - (7:28) 122 BPM
Review: Ruffgarden is Sulta's second release on Scottish label Dixon Avenue and it is very much in keeping with the imprint's quest to put out 'raw shit'. In this instance, it's mainly music inspired from 90s house and techno. "She Make Me Feel Like I Never Sinned" is a drum-heavy affair littered with samples - including sax stabs and Middle Eastern motifs - alongside nifty filtering. "Duh Yuh Luv Meh" is more pacey and combines the skipping rhythm of 2-step and a repetitive vocal sample. Best of all though is the title track, where Sulta unites the steely rhythms of Mark Broom with the widescreen synths of Carl Craig for a euphoric techno workout.

Review: Riva Starr's revered imprint is back with the best in tough rolling and funky tech house on the twelfth edition of Raw Cuts. From the raw jacking minimal antics of Catchment's "Overcomplete", Horatio takes his cues from the classic Robert Hood/M-Plant sound on the hypnotic "Viva La Revolucion", Wade gets into the UK tech house sound of now on the rolling "Until Dawn" and London based Italian Andrea Giudice takes the best of speed garage and Chicago acid on the rough 'n ready "My Turf".

Phase Seq One (original mix) - (8:25) 115 BPM Hot
Phase Seq One (The Black Madonna's Lost In Chicago mix) - (7:56) 115 BPM
Review: Surprisingly little information exists online about new Home Taping artist Simba. BY the sounds of "Phase Seq One", though, he's something of a talent. You see, "Phase Seq One" is deep, crackly, woozy and soulful, sounding not unlike the heady productions of Detroit heavyweights Andres and Moodymann - all warm loops, bumpin' beats, classic soul vocal samples and just the right amount of filter tweakery. As debuts go (assuming this is his debut), it's pretty damn hot. The Black Madonna delivers the obligatory remix, stripping back the original and adding a little more drum machine oomph to the beats. The resultant version - blessed with occasional intricate keys and the usual BM Chicago soul - is something of a late night triumph.

Review: Progressive house don Sasha on Kompakt you say? You'd better believe it! The man known to his Mam as Christopher Coe serves up a deep and slinky tech house cut for the early evening or afterhours alike on "Out Of Time" featuring Minneapolis' Polica on vocals; providing the track with that bit more ethereal edge. There's a handy instrumental and radio edit, but lets not forget Amsterdam's Patrice Baumel on the remix which is geared for just as many, if not more life affirming moments on the dancefloor with his powerful and evocative rendition.

Review: Steffi and vocalist Elif Bicer make a big impression with this charming, slightly old-school deep house tune on. The fun and playful vocal reminds one of 90s acts like St. Etienne, matching sweet-as-syrup female vocals with house grooves. Released on Ostgut Ton, the label behind the infamous Berghain/Panorama, this is definitely a groove for Panorama, where Steffi is a resident DJ.

Psycho Girfriend - (7:13) 124 BPM
Review: Jamie Jones' esteemed tech house imprint returns to wax! This time it's courtesy of Solardo; the UK duo of Mark Richards (MRK1) and James Eliot who have appeared previously on Madtech, Viva, Kaluki and Lost. On the Tribesmen EP, the title track showcases the tribal leanings that the title may suggest. This dynamic track's stripped back and percussive driven tendencies start off nicely, until that rolling bass and exotic chant soon comes into the fold. The charmingly titled "Psycho Girlfriend" is more representative of the London label's sound on this downright funky, totally bumpin and undeniably druggy stomper that just reeks of late night hedonism.

Changes (Jimpster remix) - (6:45) 122 BPM Hot
Review: German house fusionist Adam Port first hooked up with the Stereo MC's some years back, with the veteran British hip-hop duo featuring on his 2014 cut "Place". On "Changes", he laces a particularly world-weary, emotion rich vocal from mic man Rob B over a rich, bouncy, synth-laden deep house groove and intertwined electronic melodies. His own remix, which kicks off the EP, pushes the track further towards Innervisions style late night tech-house territory. Arguably the most impressive version of all, though, comes from Freerange boss Jimpster, who re-imagines "Changes" as a handclap-heavy chunk of dusty late night deep house that benefits greatly from some warm chords and sweaty percussion hits.

Review: Well consider us surprised to say the least: we'd have never of thought that the acid house anthem "Theme From S'Express" would get a re-release on Jamie Jones' Hot Creations powerhouse - not to mention some absolutely killer remixes. Originally released in 1989 and produced by the legendary Mark Moore (in collaboration with Pascal Gabriel) from their debut studio album, Original Soundtrack. It peaked at No. 1 in the UK Singles Chart in April 1988 for two weeks and is considered as one of the earliest electronic music songs to incorporate sampling. The remixes come courtesy of Greek tech house hero Detlef - whose version is respectful to the original, but gives it an adequately modern reshape and works that 303 acid darn well. Lauer and Gerd Janson's Tuff City Kids remix keeps it in the late '80s realm, like they always do so well. It incorporates some steel drum presets and a hot Juno bassline.

Review: Dusty, slammed down disco-house cosmiq. Whatever you wanna call it; space western discoteque pop from the techno future is still fun too. With dub trailing atmospheres streaking across the face of tracks like "The Light", all three here surf the skywaves of Detroit techno and Chicago house, lifting key notes and aquatic stabs from somewhere deeper in between too. Ripping key-tars and twangs bring the funk in "Volpi Polari" with "Fluto" going to Eiffel tower heights of Jean Michelle Jarre trance and '90s warehouse beats to lift you high.

Review: So far, the majority of Simon Neale aka Shadow Child's releases have been on his own Food Music imprint, but Dance Trax is sure to raise his profile. Issued on the well-known Unknown to the Unknown label, it also sees Neale's creative focus shift to old school influences. "Renegade Stabz" is a stab-heavy break beat techno affair, while on "Nonsense", a similarly party-themed sound is audible, this time with a rolling groove replacing the crashing breaks. Atypically for Shadow Child, "Don't Lose It" sees him deliver a jacking, minimal techno workout, replete with firing percussion and analogue bleeps. Working under his Geeeman guise, Gert drops a storming minimal house take on "Lose It".

From the melodic/hypnotic bliss of "Ashes In The Wind" which is sure to cause some drama on the dancefloor, to an evocative trip deep into the exotic as heard on the vocal driven "Menabelle" or lose yourself in the utterly life affirming "Secret". Review: This Berlin-based label celebrates its twenty-fifth release with a collection of tracks from its regular artists. Rampa's "Mod" is a classic serving of minimal German house, its tinny drums and percussive shards riding a buzzing bass, while David Mayer's "Smoke" follows a similar trajectory. On this occasion however, the dense, drummy framework is populated by woozy chords, subtle ticks and twists and the kind of dazed stutter that used to characterize old Grant Dell records. &ME's "Birdland" is a jazzier affair, and the final track makes for a real surprise; Adam Port teams up with '90s UK hip hop act Stereo MCs for a deep house groove full of the rapper's sultry, smoky vocals.

Review: Food Music revisit the 1991 rave anthem "DJs Take Control" by SL2 - aka legend DJ Slipmatt and John 'Lime' Fernandez with rap vocalist Jay-J.They also provide some killer remixes by some contemporary heavyweights in support. The Slipmatt & Sooney 2018 extended remix still sounds as evocative and potent as it did 27 years ago: with its Kevin Saunderson style chord progressions, tough breaks and cut 'n' paste sampling - a true zeitgeist of UK dance music's emergent hardcore rave sound. Label boss Shadow Child had his work cut out for him when attempting to rework such a classic, but delivered a dynamic and respectful version. Not to mention man of the moment DJ Boring, whose extended remix goes all the way back to the same era for a fierce junglist steppa.

Review: Making for a logical pairing, SMD and Bicep lock arms in an uplifting and bouncy jaunt through acidic basslines and emotive pads. Knowing how to cut the airy-fairy-ness and rip into a rock solid groove is a trait both parties are only too familiar with, and as such "Sacrifice" should be heard rocking out large-scale raves all over the shop with a considerable hit rate. Interestingly, the collaboration has given rise to not one but two separate ambient versions that make for a nice counterpoint to the main-room-baiting original mix, letting those fluffy elements waft out in blissful abandon.

Steffi - "Sadness" (vinyl version) - (5:38) 124 BPM Hot
Hunee - "Leaf For Hand In Hand" - (6:16) 120 BPM
Review: This sampler from Prosumer's Panorama Bar mix should dispel any doubts that the Ostgut stable caters exclusively to jaw-grinding intensity. Hunee's "Leaf for Hand in Hand" sounds like a return to UK house music of the mid to late-90s with a clubbier feel punctuated by a celebratory hook. Fused with a bleeding acid line, it nonetheless serves as a reminder of what a fruitful time that scene enjoyed. "Take U" by Soundstore a is more stripped back affair, focusing mainly on a buzzing bass, edgy beats and heavy claps - although there is some concession towards musicality thanks to some eerie synths - but "Sadness" by Steffi ensures that soul remains on the Ostgut menu. Over understated drums, Steffi lays down a sun-kissed yet somnambulant melody line and the kind of breathy vocals that Tracey Thorn would kill to emulate. These tracks make for one of the most uplifting house releases of 2011 - and reinforce Ostgut's reputation as a purveyor of the best contemporary electronic music.

Review: Although there's always been some subtle variety within Innervisions' output, Dixon and Ame's imprint has become known for a particular type of grandiose, tech-tinged house. Props to them, then, for releasing this EP of arpeggio-driven, 1980s style Italo-disco created by contemporary Italian producers. Muscemi and Phunkadelica kick things off, first layering exotic Middle Eastern synthesizer melodies over druggy arpeggio lines on "Babilonia", before slowing the tempo a little via the ghostly tunefulness, robotic vocals and chugging bottom-end of "Velluto Blue". Stereocalypse then takes over, serving up two more killer cuts: the long, bold chords, slap bass and rush-inducing melodies of "Lone Solo Drummer", and the Rimini '84 pomp of the arguably superior "The Cunning Man".

Review: Wave dem arms! Wave dem arm if you wanna wave dem arms! That's exactly the crazy feeling you'll get from listening to tracks like "All Things Go" and "To The Roots" - straight up pumping grooves that will make feel as though you have to book a ticket to the closest rooftop party in Ibiza. For something more stripped back and trackier, however, there's "Do It" that's full of straight-laced drums, rising synths and a bassline that rattles like a gangplank. For that extra techno hit check out the burly Audiojack floorworker mix to the title-track too.

Sano & Manu - "Que Rico" - (1:07) 115 BPM
Review: Comeme's latest release offers tripped out, psychedelic house at its finest. "Shake" by Cowboy Rhythmbox is like an update on 90s US house, its muscular drums, dubby bassline and percussive licks housing a strangely infectious call and response vocal. "Quiero Bailar" by Sano is built from similar elements - only this time it's a sassy, sexy Spanish vocal that's pitted against stirring strings and hammering drums. The title track, a collaboration between Capracara and The District Union, opts for a different approach, with a searing bass underpinning eerie synths and trippy 303 riffs. DJs Pareja's "Tacha" is in the same general category, with huge, whooshing filters and a pulsing, acid-layered bassline providing the impetus. Highly recommended.
