Review: It's been nearly 20 months since Raphael Ripperton last donned the Headless Ghost guise for Clone's Royal Oak offshoot. While that release, the Frontend EP, was an exploration of hissing analogue deep house peppered with sly acid house references, Swept Illusions is an altogether more polished proposition. That's not meant as a criticism; if anything, the fizzing, Latin-influenced rhythms, twinkling electronics and sun-soaked pianos that dominate "Swept Illusions" are far more memorable. The remixes come from Genius of Time under their solo aliases. Dorisburg's 808 Dance Mix is a thrilling amalgamation of dense, tribal-influenced percussion, tough 808 drums and occasional foreboding electronic stabs. Arkajo takes a different approach, layering Balearic-friendly fiddles, pads and melodies atop a shuffling, low-slung groove.

Review: Having lent a couple of the label's finest moments previously such as the Sipoor and Sound Test EPs, not to mention a killer self-titled full length last year, esteemed Israeli duo Red Axes return to Phantasy with another bunch of leftfield club tracks on the Some Lights EP. Features the tunnelling, acid house-inspired stomp of the title track, which leads into the transcendental and psychedelic dark disco journey of "Skulls" and proving there's plenty in the duo's sonic repertoire, they close it out on a low slung tip with the deep down and dirty "Professor Grasstov".

Review: Riva Starr's label comes good with another fine split release. With a focus on minimal house, Volume 2 has enough range and diversity to keep even the most discerning DJ engaged. Sebastian Xottelo's "Trick Trick" integrates creaking percussion and crackling electronic riffs into its rolling rhythm. Chicago influences bubble to the surface on Fabio Ferro's "I Have Some". Led by an insistent groove and peppered with disco samples and organ stabs, it's redolent of classic DJ Sneak. And for those who like minimal with dubbed out influences, the walking bass and trippy vocals of Diego Cardarelli's "Organ Jordan" is the track of choice on this EP.

The latest release emphasises the importance of eclecticism, open-mindedness, and non-conformity in the genre, featuring tracks across a variety of sub-genres. The focus is solely on the music, free from any biases or expectations. The track has a classic and uplifting vibe, as well as some modern and fresh elements. The EP also comes with a dub mix that strips away the vocals and adds some synth stabs and effects. "Wanna Be Free" is a fun and groovy release that showcases Boogie Brothers and Secret Soul Society's talents, and yet another great release on Citizens Of Vice.

Review: Oliver Huntemann's Senso Sounds label out Hamburg drops its best frequencies of the year for its annual round up. Large, heavy and progressive as f***, Andre Winter & Heerhorst go deep in "Time-Out", next to the likes of Marco Resmann, Citizen Kain and Timo Maas! The always groovy Timid Boy lands with the stripped back "The Force 2020" alongside Carlo Ruetz' synth heavy "Purple Sky" and Maksim Dark's bassline-centric "Energize". Huntemann himself turns in a minimal beat turned arpeggio-driven epic in "Tranquilizer 2.0" with Raul Facio, BOHO and Frankyeffe keeping it real with their stadium/club-ready numbers. Hats off the kick drum of "Maximizer". Sens-sational.

Review: Well isn't this a marvellous meeting: progressive house legend turned techno's dark lord Dubfire collaborating the pioneer of dark journey tracks (long before the Life & Death crew): the man from Bremen and Senso boss Oliver Huntemann. The dynamic duo team up for "Humano" where some ping pong delayed tom drums drenched in reverb create tunnelling trance induction atop of a slinky tech house groove; druggy dancefloor drama indeed! There's also some killer remixes on offer. Brazil's Victor Ruiz serves up his absolutely bangning peak time rendition while American producer Shaded's "Summer Skin Remix" certainly honours the trademark sound of both producers on this seething and slow burning dancefloor journey guaranteed to cause a headrush or two!

Review: Helmed by veteran German DJ Oliver Huntemann out of harbour city of Hamburg , Senso Sounds is undoubtedly the go-to label at present for the more dramatic and brooding side of contemporary techno. We have heard strong evidence of this thanks to recent efforts by fellow countrymen Andre Winter, Carlo Ruetz and Distale - but it's now over to Los Angeleno Shaded. The man from Newport Beach is no stranger to the label, with several releases thus far in addition to great appearances for Rukus, Turbo and SCI+TEC. Prepare to surrender to the void upon hearing "Ripple" with its high octane and tunnelling aesthetic, while "Sumbody" goes full throttle with its hypnotic and adrenalised style of druggy groove.

Review: British duo Ryan & Rory aka RSquared return on Knee Deep In Sound to follow up July's hit "Brown Eyes" with some more surefire tackle. Review: Polish heavyweights Catz 'N' Dogz has had a quiet year by their usually prolific standards. It would be fair to say, though, that these two cuts have been worth waiting for. "It's Happening" is a warm, rich and groovy affair, with fluttering deep house notes playing second fiddle to a booming disco bassline, flanged vocal samples and huggable drums. "Our Crazy" feels dirtier and a little more intense, with restless arpeggio lines and nagging electronic percussion combining perfectly with the duo's deliciously dense, tribal-influenced drums and chiming, marimba style lead lines. It's the kind of track you whack on to raise the temperature on the dancefloor when things are flagging, and every DJ needs a few of those in the crates.

Review: Oliver Huntemann returns to his label with a release that explores familiar and unexpected themes. "Rotten 2.0" revisits his signature sound. Over a steely kicks and bleak synths, he drops a cavernous bass and a ponderous vocal sample. These elements come together to make for a classic Huntemann track - it's darkly evocative and menacing and shot through with a clubby aesthetic. Alex Stein's take on "Rotten" follows a similar path. Upping the pace, he deploys a throbbing bass to devastating effect. And then there's the original version of "Rotten". Set to a mid-tempo pace, it features a dystopian narrative about the future - sounding like Huntemann's own cyberpunk take on trip-hop.

Review: Dark, sinuous grooves are the order of the day on this latest EP from Rostock, Germany native Rydim, which comes on Catz N Dogz's Pets Recordings label. 'Fomo' itself starts out with an extended drummy intro, then introduces the slinky, twisting bass synth riff that forms the track's main hook, wihch is joined by some acidic burblings and then mutates into a second, arpeggiated riff. It's a cut that'd work on house and techno floors alike whereas Johannes Albrecht's remix is a more straight-up acid houser, while there's more retro acid flava to be found on 'Fairlight', which comes complete with suitably spangly 80s synths.

Review: Originally released back in 2011, these collaborative tracks between Dubfire and Oliver Huntemann now get reworked. Joseph Capriati, one of the fast rising names in the minimal techno scene, has been tasked with reworking "Terra". Listening to the Italian DJ's rolling groove, tough beats and insistent stabs, it's not hard to hear why Capriati commands such a following. The other Dubfire & Huntemann track to get remixed is "Fuego", with Julien Jeweil on remix duties. The French producer uses a similar rolling groove but uses tight Chicago claps, a squelchy bass and some wild siren riffs to create an inventive new spin on minimal house.
