Review: Former Sonar Kollektiv contributor Stee Downes has enjoyed a long working relationship with Sebastian Doring AKA Lovebirds, with the pair first joining forces way back in 2011. Their latest joint effort is, as the title suggests, a pleasingly soulful and frankly joyous affair. Opener 'Freedom (Lovebirds Summer of 79 Mix)' sees Downes singing soulfully over a hybrid deep house/disco/electrofunk groove - all squelchy synth-bass, Nile Rodgers style clipped guitars and colourful synth sounds - while 'Big Mistake' is a brilliant stripped back slice of synth-powered electronic soul. Downes' effortlessly emotive vocals once again take centre stage on deliciously laidback Balearic soul number 'Prove', while the EP closing Sirs rework of 'Freedom' is a P-funk flavoured modern boogie classic in waiting.

Review: The biggest thing since Rodriguez - South African house duo Goldfish return with a sixth studio album: If Summer Was A Sound. Big synths, drums, sax and vocals is how the group define their make up, appealing to the masses in love with that hyper-fluorescent, contemporary and performative big room antic. This LP arrives at some 20-tracks large bringing with it guest collaborations, extended mixes and feel good, moody vibes that combine a heavy dose of indie and folk with new school productions. House music for the concert as much the club - shouts out to Xavier Rudd on "We Deserve To Dream".

Review: A vital thread deeply woven into the Ninja Tune complex, Jordan Rakei has long been a part of the withstanding label with his acoustic, electronic and folky, singer-song writing style. This newest release sees the musician's expression come through in what's said to be inspired by dystopian visions of our future, highlighting Charlie Brooker's Black Mirror, Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale and David Lynch's Twin Peaks. Undeniable visions of despair and harmony meet through the soft hand claps and orchestration of "Mad World" (Pool Session) while lighter, more hopeful, jazzy and ambient affairs present themselves in "Mantra" (Pool Session). Soul and sub-pop come to the surface in Rakei's original tracks like "Signs" featuring rapper Common, to the R&B styles of "You & Me" and the sultry sensation that is "Say Something". Dive into the deluxe.

Review: Manchester based DJ and producer Anz is set to release her first EP for Ninja Tune! Intended as a personally guided journey through the history of dance music and underground culture - it sees Anz take in a personalised section of electro through club-focused breakbeat, classic UK garage and jungle. Bending genres that somewhat touch on pop and R&B too, All Hours features revitalised numbers like "You Could Be" that saw Anz hook up with vocalist Riley, next to ambient synth tracks like "Quest Select (AM outro)" and some straight up jungle funk & jungle jams in "Inna Circle". Hype as it is hot!

Review: Permanent Vacation bring us the debut long-player from LA duo Woolfy vs Projections. Nu-disco from the poppier end of the spectrum is the general theme, with a strong 80s twist - as evidenced by a slo-mo cover of Bananarama's 'Cruel Summer' which actually works surprisingly well, in a TOTP 1986 kinda way. Standouts include last week's trailer single 'Last Dance', the hazy, lazy instrumental 'Being Endless' and the hefty, bassy chug of 'Fall Into You', while the 80s Euro-style vocals and pop sensibilities mean its an album that could find favour among fans of acts like Hot Chip or Little Dragon.

Review: Hello Wisconsin! Say Dekmantel who at the moment pour their interests into the electric folk, pop and synthwave of American husband and wife duo Peaking Lights. With their indie sound familiar to labels like Mexican Summer, City Slang and Not Not Fun, this E S C A P E album follows up the Sea of Sand maxi-EP released by Dekmantel in 2018. A stand out studio work, this 2020 release sees the duo go dubby in "Dreams", industrial and synthwave in "Innerterrestrial" to beatdown, psychedelic NY breaks in "Silver Clouds". Indra Dunis' sultry, breathy and playful vocals are a force in Peaking Lights' music, spare the odd instrumental tracks like "The Caves" and "Enchanted Sea", with a world of psychedelic inspirations, experimental dub, ambient and dance grooves caught up in eastern-themed motifs of E S C A P E. A Letter To Myself - (3:54) 115 BPM
Review: Emotional Rescue is delighted to present the first of two EPs from British '80s band Furniture, starting with their much sought-after, six-song "mini-album" - as they were known then - which has recently been rediscovered by a new generation of DJs and collectors.

"Transatlantic Cable" compares the cliches of a certain type of American romance - Bogart, Sinatra, Dean - to the reality of life in West London. "They're On Me" is probably one of very few pop songs to feature double bass and the word "newsagent", while "Robert Nightman's Story" is powered by a riff on marimba and abrasive rhythm guitar.

"I Miss You", a torch song so good you'd think Julie London might have cut it. A highlight for many is "Why Are We In Love". This track is a key reason for the revival of interest in the band, with pattering rhythm part and the sweet clarinet melody, creating an atmosphere that has attracted a following among discerning DJs. "A Letter To Myself" introduced the band's new, expanded line-up adding Sally Still (bass, vocals) and Maya Gilder (keyboards), which would endure until the band stopped in 1990.

Review: Emotional Rescue return to the music of cult British group Furniture, shining a light on this unique band's extended 12" mixes and alternate takes. In the 80s tradition, these versions shrug off commercial concerns for something more exciting - long run times and space to tease FX and processes that a radio-friendly single wouldn't allow. "I Can't Crack (Broken Mix)" is an epic crescendo, while the instrumental mix of "Throw Away The Script" locks into a scratchy percussive workout anchored by a moody bassline. The sprightly piano lines and cascading sax on "Dancing The Hard Bargain" are a delight to lose yourself in, while "Bullet" strikes a somber but stirring tone to close the EP out.

Review: Definitely the poppiest release in this writer's reviews pile this week, but don't let that put you off because 'pop' isn't inherently a dirty word, is it? Not when it's done well, at least, and this most certainly is. In terms of overall mood we're somewhere between 'Balearic' and 'dream pop' territory here, with sugar-sweet, almost PC Music-ish fem vox and lots of sweeping, soothing synth washes, with the sing-song vocal phrasing on 'Throwaway' nudging it just ahead of the pack to these ears. Haters gonna hate, no doubt, but listen without prejudice and you'll find some delicate gems tucked away herein!

Review: Long-term fans of Aussie soul singer Kylie Auldist should look to the cover of her new Family Tree LP for pre-warning of the new direction contained within. The angled and exaggerated first name recalls 80s records by her fellow countrywoman, Miss Minogue. However although Auldist has not gone the full SAW, she has fully embraced the DX7-heavy digital soul pop of that same era. There are 11 tracks here of fun and frothy synth-soul including the punchy title track, the smooth Jam & Lewis grooves of "No Change" and the slow RnB electro grind of "Warming Up The Sun".

Too Confusing - (4:42) 111 BPM
Surrender - (3:37) 86 BPM
Too Confusing (Demo) - (4:51) 109 BPM
Review: Emotional Rescue returns to early 1980s Manchester with the previously unreleased music of Michael James Pollard and his beautiful distillation of indie pop in Too Confusing and bedsit cover version of Ashford and Simpson's Surrender. While studying photography at Manchester Polytechnic, (MJ) Pollard lived and played in a band in a ramshackle house in Walley Range. In the cellar studio he would write and record his own songs using their guitars, fretless bass and keys, as well as his own Casio VL-Tone VL-1 and Simmons Clap Trap to augment his drums onto a 4 track TEAC. By 1983, and now solo, he was recording out of Dislocation Dance's studio (ERC111), had secured a Peel Session and via Factory Records' Lindsay Reade, was discussing with Fundacao Atlantica about releasing an album. Working with singer Sioux Goddard as a duo, they put down 8 songs in 2 weeks in summer '84. However, Fundacao Atlantica's financial difficulties and soon closure meant the songs were lost until now. Recovered off the original tapes and lovingly restored, Too Confusing captures the optimism of the sessions, a summer love melody of forlorn youth. Surrender accompanies, recorded back in that cellar in '81, with friend Stephanie Danziger on vocals, its lo-fi simplicity is a perfect take on an all-time classic, making this a newly prized gem of British indie pop history.

Review: 1981's An Eye For An Eye is, to this day, the only LP produced by Byrne & Barnes together, and it's as playful and fresh as the first day it came out. While it's a little more on the synth side of things, it reminds us of other blue-eyed soul artists such as Ned Doheny, and throughout its eleven tunes, there's plenty of romance, mystique and soul-ridden funk. Think of it as the prototypical bridge between a 70's jazz-funk LP and the beginning of pop music as we know it today. Blue-eyed soul at its finest!

Gutsy, energetic and backed by a tight act, Tanika has the scope and space to explore the full soul spectrum; the thumping upbeat twister "Soul Run", the swooning doo-wap of "More Than A Man" and gospel-inspired delivery of R&B strutter "Money" and heart-stopping vocal peaks and troughs of the cosmic blues ballad "Heavy" are just a few of the highlights on this highly accomplished debut album. Tip.

Review: Introducing KUCKA! A hotly tipped, fresh and new artist to emerge in full debut form via LuckyMe. A Liverpool born vocalist and producer now residing in Australia - explaining something of her connection to the Future Classic label and Dro Carey - she now drops her first studio album. Synth heavy, bass inspired and vocal driven, Wrestling is certainly connected to a world of postmodern new age pop! A prime example being the '90s R&B motifs in "Afterparty" alongside deeper dancefloor connections in tracks like "Joyride" and "No Good For Me". Threading the album with a sequence of futuristic pop and fusion crossover in tracks like "Real", "Drowning" and "Ascension", KUCKA's debut, Wrestling, wins hands down.

Review: Post Industrial Boys is the production alias of Tbilisi, Georgia singer-songwriter George 'Gogi' Dzodzuashvili, who's also part of the Goslab collective, and this is his fourth PIB album in 20 years. Previous long-players have been described variously as leftfield, electronic, experimental, downtempo and ambient: that should give you a few clues as to the sound of this one, which starts with the introspective, biographical title track and takes in a further eight slices of contemplative synth doodlings and half-sung/half-spoken, poetic and very narrative-driven lyrics. Listen closely and you'll hear echoes of Lou Reed, Leonard Cohen and Tom Waits, as well as 80s 'intellipop' artists such as Black, Furniture or even David Sylvian (in solo mode).

Review: There's something rather terrifying about "De Angst Voorbij", even if the album title is compelling you to move "Beyond The Fear". The brainchild of Flemish cult star Gerry Vergult, its drone-fuelled broodiness contrasts poppier nuances (perhaps most eerily on "Russische Roulette", nodding to some of horror's most tried and tested methods of disturbing us. "Monster" incorporates organ chords that could be the cries of a haunted fairground. "Faits Divers" uses a simple two-tone melody to slowly build an imposing atmosphere, dropping delightful piano keys over the top to bring about a sense of parallels that correlate and compliment. It's an intriguing beast that is unapologetically challenging, truly unforgettable, and deserves a place in any far-reaching and forward-thinking music collection. Those looking for real proof should check the dark wave-y hypnosis of "Usurpation".

Review: London's Danced Til Midnight are back with "More of Love", a low slung, sensually charged slice of nu soul complete with Carmelle Cox's velvety vocals and guaranteed to get the floor bumping and grinding whatever the hour. "No Way Back" gets more funky and uplifting complete with a totally kick ass strings section and big band dynamic. There are some great remixes too: Faze Action's rendition of "More Of Love" gets some proper boogie playground action happening; which we were really into, while The Revenge's remix is more quality nu-disco action by a true master.
