Anna Butterss, the Adelaide, Australia-born bassist and composer, delivers a compelling and unorthodox debut album, Mighty Vertebrate, on International Anthem. This release marks a significant milestone for Butterss, who has established herself as a sought-after bassist on the international jazz and avant-garde scene. Butterss' approach to composition is both deliberate and spontaneous. She employs a set of oblique strategies, such as "I'm going to make a song where the bass doesn't function in the role of a bass" and "I'm going to work on this for an hour and then I'm going to stop." This approach lends the album a sense of spontaneity and unpredictability. The album's title, Mighty Vertebrate, is a fitting reflection of its structural complexity. Butterss constructs the album from disparate found parts, creating a dynamic and engaging listening experience. The result is a mighty experimental jazz jaunt that challenges traditional notions of the bass and its role in music. Refreshing and inspiring!
