Review

Electronic experimentalist Ben Frost is renowned for making music that flits between challenging, post-punk influenced mutilated noise, and deeply atmospheric, picturesque electronica. This contrasting approach once more provides an anchor for his fifth studio album, The Centre Cannot Hold. It was recorded over ten days in Chicago and, according to interviews undertaken by Frost to promote the set, was both "an exercise in limitation and chromatic saturation" and "an attempt at transcribing a spectrum of glowing ultramarine in sound". In other words, it hurtles from dark, droning intensity to delicate and soothing, melody rich ambience.
