A ten-year veteran of all things House and Techno, German producer Christian Fischer drops a funky bomb with Hammerschmidt. Like Gramophonedzie's Why Don't You, there seems to be a real trend right now for combining 4/4 beats with big and bold samples of vintage brass. On Hammerschmidt, there are plenty of honking saxophones and big-band jazz riffs flowing, all tastefully anchored to a jacking 120bpm beat. The effect is lively and fresh, and thankfully not as cheesy as it could have been.
On the remix front, De Dupre builds some nice crescendos into his reworking whilst keeping the beat deep and the brass hits dubby. Danny Nagels and Erez Only go even further and add a huge, face-melting build into the tune, which in turn drops into something almost carnivalesque, courtesy of some added percussive touches.
The Freestyle mix brings it all back to the brass though, keeping it centre stage and high in the mix. until it unexpectedly shifts tempo and drops down into a funky full-band jam half way through. It's one of the most unusual switches I've ever heard in a tune, but the element of surprise alone makes it work tremendously well. Eventually the beat gets brought back in, creating a moment that's sure to set a dancefloor alight. A single with a lot of highlights, Hammerschmidt comes very highly rated.
