Review

Damian Lazarus has long thought of himself as something of a musical "wizard" - an alchemist focused on casting different types of dancefloor spells, sometimes in cahoots with guest vocalists and collaborators. There's plenty of the latter on 'Magickal', a slim but perfectly formed eight-track album. He begins with a pair of inspired vocal numbers (future sun-down anthem 'Searchin' featuring Jem Cooke and the deep, sub-heavy and string-drenched Zoe Kypri voiced 'So Low') before flitting between spacey chunkiness ('Y Don't U'), early morning dreaminess (A-Trak and Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs collab 'Falling Down'), acid house/tribal house fusion (the superb 'La Hija de Juan Simon), warming dancefloor wonkiness (Matthew Jonson hook up 'R U Dreaming'), picturesque deep tech-house/progressive house fusion ('Sunrise Generation', with Fink), and breakbeat-driven moody pop ('Force', featuring Jojo Abott).
