French twosome Danny and Mike Parton (not, we think, their real names) established Jolene Records last year to pay tribute to the Halcyon days of the 'French Touch' sound of the late 1990s. In practice, that means chunky house beats, filter effects aplenty and lots of cheeky loops and samples from vintage disco and funk cuts. Mike Paton steps up first, slamming down the vintage Cassius-meets-DJ Sneak-style loop funk of 'What A Mess' and the 80s soul-sampling bounce of 'Go Out!'. Fellow label owner Danny Parton takes over for the rest of the EP, first exploring head-nodding, Soundstream-esque 'Head In The Sky', before rounding off a rock-solid EP via the more rolling, jazzy and tasty 'In The Groove'.
