New Zealand's Alias is hip-hop to the very bone. In a previous chapter of his career he was part of the Fast Crew, supporting the likes of D12 and Busta Rhymes whenever they toured in New Zealand or Australia. And while he's shifted focus to a more explicit, nu-funk / bass sound, it still beats with a hip-hop riddim. Each of the four cuts on here ride with a raw, low-swung swagger. From the jangly shakers and headnod heroics of "Funkrion", to the snarling "New Lows" - where sluggish glitch-bass tugs stoically against the emotional synths - there's a confident and alluring attitude about the entire release.
