Review

The Gqom Oh! trip continues as the Durban collective recruit a new beat fusionist; Emo Kid. Already established in South Africa as producer for DJ Tira and well known for his sgubhu work-outs, here he breaks down the rivalries between the two styles with a sense-blurring collection of drum-focused, orchestrally-charged explorations; "Asbambeki" is almost grime-like in its forthright vocals and sharp beats while "Futuristic Gqom" rips and rides with a classic techno feel building in lavish keys and an expertly tamed and tantalising synth weave over the top while "Insimbi Yase Dubane" celebrates house music's love for the Afro beat with a Julian Jabre-level piece of euphoria. Elsewhere we're dazzled by theatrical orchestra demons on "Rains Of Terror", taken to tropical places on "Enkwarini" and given an evangelistic rubdown on "Ground Shaker". An outstanding new chapter from the Gqom collective.
