On "Frogman", Hidenobu delivers a new articulation of the minimal sound. The hiccupping rhythms are still there, but the mood is bleaker and weirder, with the chopped up vocals sounding disturbingly trippy and the snapping hats that plays out over the dank rhythm sounding more similar to percussion used on heavier, Berghain-primed techno. However, "Shepard Tone" sees Hidenobu opt for a radically different approach. Over the course of nearly ten minutes tonal frequencies gradually build and build. Accompanied by a swelling wave of white noise, they eventually reach a climax that is nothing short of incendiary. Try achieving that with cookie-cutter mnml.
