Here, funk and soul reissue specialists Popcorn unveil two more long-lost gems for dusty-fingered crate-diggers. The stand out is Varetta Dillard's "That's Why I Cry", a rock and roll-era bumper with a deliciously infectious vocal. In many ways it's classic rhythm and blues, with Dillard - hardly a household name, but loved by R&B connoisseurs - riding a jaunty backing that benefits from some great horns and jazz guitars. Jane Baker's "Sing On Baby", meanwhile, boasts a far more "Southern" feel, with doo-wop style backing vocals and a swing-time backing bringing the best out of her delightful vocal. It's good, too, but lacks the punch of Dillard's superb flipside.
