Review

It's been a while since we last heard from Jazzbox, AKA Scandinavian multi-instrumentalist and producer Per Ebdrup. Trees is his first album for six years and sees him move away from the freshly baked downtempo beats of old in favour of the dancefloor pulse of deep house. Of course, his obsession with jazz remains - see the Cinematic Orchestra style mellow warmth of "Beech", as well as the simmering orchestration and drowsy woodwind solos that litter the album - it's just that this time round, the rhythms draw more on Innervisions style tech house than dub, hip-hop or funk. While a radically different approach to his previous work, it works magnificently, thanks in no small part to his ability to create poignant, melancholic and thrillingly beautiful tracks.
