Review

US producer Derringer isn't that prolific, but each one of his releases is well worth checking. On Quarters, he makes the kind of analogue techno noise that is all too rare. Instead of trying to seduce the listener with dusty tape sounds, the title track is like a classic Synewave record, led by tough kicks, clanging metallic drums and tonal bleeps that are wilder and less predictable than those used in modern techno arrangements. "The Stranger" is of a similar bent, but this time the sound is tougher as distorted drums and wild acid squiggles are underpinned by menacing claps. Speedy J's label has also commissioned a dubby, tribal take on "Quarters" from Giorgio Gigli and a reshape of "Stranger" by Voices from the Lake that remains in slamming, filtered analogue mode.
