Review

From the sounds of his latest EP on longtime home Roam Recordings, it looks like JP Soul has been listening to the minimal wave and experimental synth-pop reissues of fellow San Francisco residents Dark Entries. "Bachannal" is stylish, bustling and quietly psychedelic, with clear nods towards skewed '80s synth-pop amongst the Nein-ish nu-disco beats. The minimal wave and dark electro influence is even greater on the arguably superior "Might as Well", with fuzzy, foreboding guitars and synths riding a sparse, triple-time groove. The stellar remix package includes a brilliantly darm and moody version of "Bachannal" by the Hardway Brothers, a blissful Balearic nu-disco revision of the same track by In Flagranti, and Thomass Jackson's low-slung, post-punk style interpretation of "Might as Well".
