Review

Following his massive remix of Duke Dumont, Leeds-based Last Magpie continues to wear his heart on his sleeve with this beautiful four-piece that nods at so many pools of inspiration it's dizzying. The title track takes us back to the late 90s/early 2000s garage days via the Metalheadz express. Steppy, spacious and ominous, it's instant dark times! "Chicken Shop" takes us even further back to early Detroit and Chicago, all loop vocal shots and a kick that booms so hard it's almost toxic. "Initial" then soothes the blow with lush Apparat-style mournful soul. Finally we hit a serious VIP crescendo as his breakthrough murker "Roots" gets a rugged rudeboy amen polish. Heaviness, clarity, depth and a clear love for some of the best genres in the last 30 years... Last Magpie knows his stuff.
