Review

After a series of explosive EPs, Berlin-based producer Moerbeck drops his debut album on Code is Law. It starts with "Put The Swords Down", a trademark Moerbeck jam, with a lithe, stepping rhythm and percussive ticks underpinning a dark, wailing siren riff. "Virgin Suicide" features a tough tribal groove and what sounds like guitar wails wrapped around it, while "Bittersweet" resonates to frazzled, rough filters. However, the album also reveals a different side to Moerbeck; "T.R.I.P.S. (April The 19th)" is a tough, bleep-heavy house workout and the tracky "Back Home" features an insistent disco loop at its centre. The harder jams will appeal to Moerbeck's existing fans, but his debut album shows that he is spreading his creative wings.
