Review

Chris Liebing didn't need to look far to sign Monoloc - his studio is next door to the gregarious CLR owner's place - and Drift is a testament to sourcing home-grown talent. There are nods to the abstract/industrial approach that is prevalent in contemporary techno, but Monoloc sets himself apart by adding woozy sounds to the broken beats on "Lost" and dropping distorted beats and robo vocals on "About". Vocals play a vital role on Drift and listening to Daniel Wilde's Gothic tones over the firing groove of "When I Get Older" or the somewhat sadistic "It's Mine" - where typical EBM notions of control and ownership dominate the narrative - it sounds like Monoloc has stumbled upon a gnarly, demented take on the darkest corners of Depeche Mode's techno pop sensibilities.
